Another new feature of the 3.1 firmware is the ability to download ringtones wirelessly from your iPhone or iPod touch. Currently there are over 30,000 ringtones available from all 4 of the major music labels. The ringtones are $1.29 (USD) each.

To view this new feature, you will need to go into the iTunes application and then the More option on the lower menu bar. Here you will see a Ringtones option in the menu. Once selected, you have the ability to view Featured, Top Tens (by genres) or Genres of ringtones.

If you see a song from the list that piques your interest, select it. This will bring you to an info page that contains the Artist, Album title, Genre and Release Date of the song. You are also able to preview the ringtone, read reviews about the ringtone and see more media by the artist (which include songs, albums, videos… etc).

You can listen to the ringtone by tapping on the ringtones title. The ringtones range from about 20 second to 30 seconds in length. Each ringtone can be quickly purchased by tapping on the purchase price which will switch to a Buy Now button.

Once you select Buy Now, you are giving the option to assign the ringtone as the default ringtone (that would be your main ringtone), assign it to a specific contact or Done which would just add the ringtone into the list of ringtones available on your iPhone. Once you have made your selection, you will need put in your iTunes password.

Voilà, a new ringtone.

- Yep sure did! (66.0%, 1,093 Votes)
- No, and I’m not going to. (4.0%, 63 Votes)
- I’m going to, I just haven’t yet. (30.0%, 493 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,649

The poll above was taken right when 3.0 was first released. It would be interesting to take it again now and is if the results are any different. You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well.

Downloading Files
Again, I wasn’t sure where this feature would come in handy. I couldn’t think of a file that I needed to download, but then I read some of the individual reviews on the iTunes store site. Seeqpod.com kept coming up in conversations as a potential site to use with iDownload. I checked it out using the mini-browser that is included within the iDownload app. I proceeded to listen to several musical files which after I confirmed the “Download Now” prompt, subsequently began to download into the Files section of the app. Within seconds, I had a few songs on my iPhone that I could play at any time. For the record, I chose songs that I already owned, since I have a sneaky feeling that not doing so would be a violation of some kind of copyright law.

Sharing Files
The next step in testing iDownload was to see how easy it would be to share files to and from the iPhone. The instructions said that I needed to enable sharing on iDownload and point my web browser to the web address displayed on my iPhone. Although it did not work the first time, on the second attempt, sure enough I saw a list of the same files on my computer screen. I then got excited and immediately tested the upload file option. Once it was enabled on my iPhone, I proceeded to upload this very review onto my iPhone, and within seconds, I was viewing this document on my iPhone.

Analysis and Conclusion
Although I was skeptical at first as to how easy iDownload would be to use, I was converted soon after playing around with the app for little bit. After reading through the directions and following the “1,2,3” instructions, I now have a method to wirelessly transfer files directly from any web enabled computer to my iPhone and vice versa. This can be a potential lifesaver should I have a file that I need or have at work and I don’t have my usual USB memory stick. As I continue to explore the possibility of shifting completely to a hard-drive less lifestyle, iDownload gives me additional options in helping me get there. The simple little app provides me an easy method to transfer files to and from the iPhone. While I do not envision it as a large file storage solution, it has a nice and clean user interface that allows for easy file sharing.

If you remember iSlsk, a P2P client from firmware 1.1.4 and below, you will recognize MewSeek. MewSeek is iSlsk for firmware 2.x. It has basically the same look and the same features as iSlsk. When you open MewSeek, you will get a Terms of Agreement in which you will need to accept before entering into the application. Once in the application, you will notice that the lower menu options have not changed they still include; What’s New which gives you more information about the application, Settings, File Search, Transfers and Downloads.

You can sign up for an account in the Settings. If you already had an account for iSlsk…you can use that same username and password. File Search still allows you to search for files and looks exactly that same as it did before. The same goes for the Transfers option…looks and functions the same as before. The only option that is not currently available is the Downloads option. MewSeek does not (at this time) download the files to your stock iPod application on your iPhone or iPod Touch either. However, the files that you download can be played via PwnPlayer. They show up in PwnPlayer’s File System section and play with no problem (at least the ones I tried).

Overall MewSeek works great…I did not have any issues using the application. I also love that it continues to download files in the background when you close the application. When MewSeek is connected, you will get a little MewSeek icon on your Status Bar. To disconnect MewSeek just go into Settings and select the Disconnect button in the upper left corner. Like all P2P clients, be sure to read all information regarding the use of this application before using.

Pocaster is an application that allows you to wirelessly download podcasts (similar to MobileCast). When you open Podcaster, you will get a nice splashscreen and then the main page of the application. Here you will see a lower menu bar with the options; My Podcasts, Unplayed and Downloads. My Podcasts is where you can search for a podcast or import a podcast. You can do this by selecting the + icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

If you find a podcast you would like, you can select it and it will be add it to the My Podcasts list. Once selected, you will then be brought back to the main screen where you will see the podcast you just selected from the the search results. From here you can select the title of the podcast to get a list of all the available podcasts. This will bring up a list and another menu bar. On the lower menu bar you now have the option to (from left to right) mark all the podcasts as read, use the build in movie player or Podcaster’s movie player, unsubscribe to the entire podcast and refresh the podcast list.

If you select one of the podcasts from the list, it will open the podcast. You then have the option to (from left to right) view the movie using the built in movie player, mark the podcast as not new or if you tap the icon again you can mark it as new again, play the podcast and download the podcast. I would suggest downloading the podcast before trying to watch it unless you are on smokin fast internet. Other wise it tried to download while you watch it and you end up hearing like one minute and then have to wait another minute while it downloads more of the podcast!! You can also get more info about the podcast by selecting the list icon in the upper right corner. To get back to the list of podcasts, select the arrow icon in the upper left corner.

Once you have selected a podcast from the list it will no longer have a blue circle to the right or it…indicating that it is no longer new. Now, you can select the Podcaster icon in the upper left corner to get back to the My Podcasts list.

Back on My Podcasts, if you select the Unplayed option on the lower menu bar, you will get a list of all unplayed podcasts from all the podcasters in your My Podcasts list. The Downloads option on the lower menu bar will list the podcasts that you have actually downloaded. Just select one to get the play screen.

I did find that if you start a podcast downloading, it will continue to download the podcast while you use the application. Also, if you close the app, it will pause the download and start it again as soon as you open the application back up…which is a nice feature! The application does get a little laggy when it is downloading podcasts but, it isn’t too bad. Overall, a nice application…it does exactly what it is supposed to do and does it well. If you want to purchase the full application, you can do so for $4.99.

Another app that made it’s debut this week-end was MobileCast. I really liked the MobileCast application from firmware 1.1.4 and below!! I used it all the time! So, I was really excited to see that MobileCast had made it to firmware 2.x. MobileCast is an application that allows you to wireless download podcasts.

The new MobileCast has a slightly new look and feel to it. When you open the application, you will notice three options on the lower menu bar; Favorites, Downloads and Search. The Search option allows you to search for audio and video podcasts. I will say that the search is a little slow and slightly glitchy but, if you can make it past that, you will get a list of relevant options based on your search. You can then select Add next to the podcast you would like to add to your favorites. You will get a pop-up saying that the podcast feed was successfully added.

Now, you can go to Favorites and you will see a list of all the podcasts that you have added. If you do not see any, select the refresh button in the upper right corner. You can also add feeds manually by selecting the + icon in the upper right corner. To see the individually podcasts for each feed, just select the Title of the podcast. You will then get a list of podcasts available (if you do not see a list, select the refresh button in the upper right corner). To download a podcast, select Download and then hit the refresh button. The podcast will start to download. Now, based on what you are connected to Edge, 3G or WiFi…it will determine how quickly the podcasts download. Once the podcast is downloaded, it will say Play next to it. You can select Play to watch the podcast. The podcast is also added to the Downloads section of the application. If a podcast is not showing up in the Downloads section even though it says Play after it, you will need to go into Downloads and selec the refresh button.

If you start downloading a podcast, you can continue to search and use the application and the podcast will continue to download in the background. I did find that I had a few issues with crashing and glitchy while using this application. But, if you are patient and do not try to do too many things at once, it does work. I do hope that we see an upgrade soon but, I still like this application!

MxTube has made it’s way into Cydia. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to see it so quickly based on a post written by the developer a few days ago saying that MxTube was going to be delayed due to a few bugs. It seems the developer has made a compromise releasing version 1.5a. It basically makes MxTube run on the 2.0 firmware…there are a few new feature but, it is not the full MxTube 2.0 version. The new features include; Background Downloader (which allows you to continue to download videos even after closing the application), Video Descriptions and the ability to watch videos in MxTube before downloading them. All of which are very cool new features!!

When you first open MxTube 1.5a, you will need to accept the License Agreement. From here you will get a donate pop-up and then be brought to the main page of the application. The overall application looks the same. You still have the options; Featured, Search, Videos and Downloads. However, when you select the Search option, you will notice that there are two data sources; YouTube Mobile and YouTube.com. Here is what the developer has to say about the two:

“YouTube Mobile is the video search feed Apple’s YouTube app uses. YouTube.com will contain videos that do not show on YouTube Mobile. This feature is currently disabled because YouTube.com search requires FLV to MP4 conversion which has not been implemented in 1.5a’s background downloader.”

So basically, on version 1.5a, you will want to use YouTube Mobile if you are going to be using the background downloader feature. If you are not going to be using the background downloader feature, you can use either YouTube Mobile or YouTube.com. YouTube.com has more videos.

Once you have entered what you would like to search for, it will bring up a list of all relevant videos. To get more info about a video or to watch and/or download a video just tap on it. This will bring you to the video’s page which will give you the following information about the video; the title of the video, the star rating out of five starts, number of views, a description, the date the video was added, the category, the tags, the option to watch the video in high or low quality and the option to download the video in either High, Low or FLV + Convert. If you would like to watch the video before downloading it, you can select either the High or Low options for streaming. It will open the video in a video player. You can select Done at any time during the video and it will bring you back to the video’s page in MxTube. If you would then like to download the video, just select which quality of download you would like. Like in the previous version, videos that are being downloaded are displayed on the Downloads page. Once they have completed downloading they are displayed on the Videos page.

I tested the background downloading feature and it worked great. I selected a video that I wanted it to download and then I closed the application. The next time I opened MxTube, the video was downloaded and it was in the Videos list. Though, I am on wifi. It will be interesting to see how it works over Edge. Overall, I love this application and I’m glad to finally have it on 2.0. It seems to be working very nicely. I am curious to see what the full MxTube 2.0 will bring. I guess we will have to wait and see. Until then, happy downloading!
On the main Info screen you will notice six flags representing the language that are supported, they include; French, English, German, Italian and Korean. Another new feature is in the Download section, you will now see a MediaCache options which you then have to select to get the list of files in your media cache. This makes it a little easier to pull the files off.

Another cool new feature is that in the Music section, you are now able to add the the music files to a Playlist. If you tap on a file, you will get a pop-up up with the options; Infos, Play and Cancel. If you select Infos, it will give you information about the file and the ability to add it to the Playlist. You can then play the Playlist by taping on the Playlist icon at the top of the Music screen. I also noticed that there is a repeat icon at the top of both the Music and Videos option. If you tap it, it will turn blue and if you tap it again it will add a number. This will then repeat whatever file you play. MyMedia is available through the iPod Touched source.
