iBlueNova, an application that allows the transfer of files via Bluetooth, was released yesterday. Before you purchase the app, you are able to test it with a 15 day trial. To download the trial, select the Purchase button in the upper right corner (where the Install button normally is). This will not actually purchase the app but, will install the free 15 day trial.

Once installed, the app is decently easy to use. It allows you to transfer Pictures, Music, Videos or Other Files. You can view all the available Bluetooth connections in the Device Discovery option. Here you are also able to view the strength of the device’s WiFi, the device’s name, Address and Class as well as Favorite specific devices. You can also view your transfer activity allowing you to see the progress of transfers or stop a transfer.

The Setting contain quite a few options including the ability to set an authorization security pin which requires a pin to authorize a connection. You also have the ability to choose how you would like images sent. They are sent as .png’s by default however, you can change it so that they are sent as .jpeg. You can also choose to have incoming images saved to your Camera Roll. You are also able to view and change the save paths for Pictures, Music, Videos and Other files which is helpful.

Overall, the app is pretty easy to use. Just find the image or file you would like to transfer, select it and select the device you would like it sent to. I did have quite a few crashes and a few times in which the file transfer failed. So, the app does need a little work but, it’s a good start.

Note: If you would like to transfer files from iPhone to iPhone, both iPhones will need to have iBlueNova installed and running.

Interestingly, after writing a review about iDownload, and reading and responding to a reader’s comment, I began to consider what it would be like to tap into the possibility of using the iPhone as a mobile storage utility. First, I explored Air Sharing, since I downloaded it for free a few months ago, but never actually setup the program. I was impressed with its ease of use, but was disappointed that only WiFi access was available. Upon reading that Readdledocs supported 3G or EDGE connections as well, I became further intrigued.

Overview
Similar to Air Sharing, upon opening Readdledocs, you can view your files and file folders available on your iPhone. When you open a file, the document appears on screen, and the application supports many file formats including the common MS Office file types and PDF files. There is an extensive PDF manual that comes with the program that effectively explains all of the features that come with this program. There are a lot of bells and whistles included (reading ebooks, iDisk access, and exchanging files with other users), but I will stick to the ones that mattered to me the most. In addition to the iPhone’s storage, your purchase of Readdledocs comes with a 512 MB of online storage where you can keep more files of your choosing. A web browser is also included for you to download documents directly into Readdledocs. For an extensive list of features, check out their website.

Now, let’s start from left to right. The App Lock option on the lower menu bar is where you can lock (password protect) stock, App Store and jailbroken apps. It will give you a nice list of all the applications on your iPhone. The list is broken up into the two categories; App Store Apps and System App which are basically everything else besides App Store apps (stock and jailbroken). Once you have found an app that you would like to lock, select it. This will give you a pop-up asking if you would like to lock the application. If you say yes, it will change the icon to the right of the app from green to red indicating that it is now locked. Once you have selected all the apps that you would like to have locked, just close mAdvLock using the Home Button.

Back on your SpringBoard, when you try to open an application in which you have chosen to be locked, you will get a pop-up asking for the password…it is the same password that you set in the mAdvLock app. If you would like to remove the password protection from an application all you need to do is go back into mAdvLock and tap on the app…it will give you a pop-up asking if you would like to unlock the application. This feature works great for me. I tested it on stock, App Store and jailbroken applications and it worked perfectly. I was able to both add and remove the password protection with no problem.

The next two option on the lower menu bar, Finder and Coffer, work in conjunction with one another. Finder allows you to search your iPhone or iPod Touch for files. In doing so, it then allows you to encrypt the file. When you encrypt a file, it can no longer be viewed on your iPhone or iPod Touch. However, the encrypted files are added to the Coffer section of the application. In the Coffer section, you will find that the files you have encrypted are put into categories (Documents, Photos, Media and Other). When you select one of your encrypted files in Coffer, you will get the some file information along with the options to Delete, Decript or Preview the file. If you would like to be able to see the file on your iPhone again…select the Decript option.

Here is an example, I encrypted my notes.db file. So, in the Finder option, I searched for Notes and then selected the notes.db file. I was given the option to view the file (which is done right in the application), the option to encrypt the file and the option to cancel. I chose to encrypt the file. I then closed the application using the Home Button and went into my stock Notes application and it said that there were no notes (when indeed there are about six notes created). I went back into mAdvLock and went into the Coffer option. I found my notes.db file in the list and selected it. I then Decrypted it and went back into my stock Notes application on my iPhone…tada! I could see all my notes again! I haven’t had a chance to test every aspect of the encrypting…because there are a ton of things you could do with it…but, the things I have tested worked.

One thing to note is that you can only encrypt one file with the free version of the application. You can lock as many apps as you would like but, you are limited on the number of files you can encrypt. You are also unable to use the SIM password protect option on the free version. The full version of the application allows you to have unlimited file encryptions and use the SIM password protect feature. The full version of the application is $14.99. If this is an app you will use a lot…it just might be worth it. You can purchase the app within the Coffer and Settings options.

Overall, the app seems smooth and well built. I did not have any crashing problems and everything I tested worked as it should. The app also has a very nice Help section…check it out if you have any questions! And remember…don’t forget your password to the application!!!

I must admit that I’ve had this app on my iPhone for a while now, and I had been putting off writing the review. Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with this app, and I wanted to make sure I explored all of the possible uses before I made my final opinions. First, the most obvious use for this application is to allow one to download files directly onto the iPhone. I haven’t had much use for this. For one, the iPhone does not have a built-in method for accessing files as my previous Windows Mobile devices did. There’s no “My Computer” to be found (thankfully) on my iPhone home screen. Thus, I’ve never been tempted to download and store any files on my iPhone. If I needed to look at a file, the iPhone usually took care of this by opening the PDF, Word, or Excel document and that was that.

Overview
With iDownload, you are able to download files directly to your iPhone, as well as share files with any web-enabled device. This is supposed to be two-way, so files can be transferred both to and from the iPhone. Although the instructions on the website state that it would be “easy as 1, 2, 3”, I decided to put each function to the test. My results follow below:

Downloading Files
Again, I wasn’t sure where this feature would come in handy. I couldn’t think of a file that I needed to download, but then I read some of the individual reviews on the iTunes store site. Seeqpod.com kept coming up in conversations as a potential site to use with iDownload. I checked it out using the mini-browser that is included within the iDownload app. I proceeded to listen to several musical files which after I confirmed the “Download Now” prompt, subsequently began to download into the Files section of the app. Within seconds, I had a few songs on my iPhone that I could play at any time. For the record, I chose songs that I already owned, since I have a sneaky feeling that not doing so would be a violation of some kind of copyright law.

Sharing Files
The next step in testing iDownload was to see how easy it would be to share files to and from the iPhone. The instructions said that I needed to enable sharing on iDownload and point my web browser to the web address displayed on my iPhone. Although it did not work the first time, on the second attempt, sure enough I saw a list of the same files on my computer screen. I then got excited and immediately tested the upload file option. Once it was enabled on my iPhone, I proceeded to upload this very review onto my iPhone, and within seconds, I was viewing this document on my iPhone.

Analysis and Conclusion
Although I was skeptical at first as to how easy iDownload would be to use, I was converted soon after playing around with the app for little bit. After reading through the directions and following the “1,2,3” instructions, I now have a method to wirelessly transfer files directly from any web enabled computer to my iPhone and vice versa. This can be a potential lifesaver should I have a file that I need or have at work and I don’t have my usual USB memory stick. As I continue to explore the possibility of shifting completely to a hard-drive less lifestyle, iDownload gives me additional options in helping me get there. The simple little app provides me an easy method to transfer files to and from the iPhone. While I do not envision it as a large file storage solution, it has a nice and clean user interface that allows for easy file sharing.

I just ran across this really great tool…it allows you to view the folder and files on your iPhone/iPod Touch using an application on your computer called iPhoneBrowser (sorry Mac users, it is PC only). The nice thing about this application is that it is easier to set up than SSH and your iPhone doesn’t even need to be jailbroke in order to use it! Though, if your iPhone is not jailbroke, you will not be able to see many of the folders because Apple restricts the access. If you would like to learn more about jailbreaking your iPhone, please see our Jailbreak page. <!--

To use the application all you need to do is download the iPhoneBrowser file to your computer. You can go HERE to download the current version of iPhoneBrowser (at the time of this article, the file you want is SetupiPhoneBrowser.1.52.exe). Once it has finished downloading, open iPhoneBrowser on your computer. Once the application is open, on the right will be all the folders on your iPhone and on the left will be all the files within the folder. There is even a nice preview window. For more information on how to use iPhoneBrowser check out the developer’s Usage Page.
