Apple has released the new version of firmware for all devices (besides first generations of course), version 4.2, to developers. The final, gold master file is ready. This means it will install even if you’re not a developer. This is the firmware that brings folders and backgrounding to the iPad and printing to all devices! The firmware will probably be out officially from Apple via iTunes within a week or so but if you want it early, follow the directions below. If you want to jailbreak, see the instructions following the update instructions.

As of the writing of this article, Cydia isn’t ready for 4.2 and I’m also not sure that this will work on the iPad for sure. Please correct me on this. The dev team blog says to point redsn0w at firmware 4.1. The iPhone runs 4.1 but not the iPad. You may be able to point it a previous iPad firmware but I haven’t tested this yet. I’m honestly waiting to jailbreak myself once Cydia is ready. We will update this article once we can confirm. I recommend syncing your device before starting this.

Instructions on updating to 4.2

1. Download the newest version of iTunes, 10.1 (links here)

2. Install the new iTunes.

3. Download the correct firmware for your device. (http://gumballtech.com/2010/11/01/ios-4-2-gm-released-for-all-devices-download-here/)

4. In iTunes, select your device and hold the Shift(windows) or Option(Mac) key while clicking the update button. This will open a window to choose your own firmware. Select the one you Just downloaded.

5. Now just wait until the update is complete. You will then have firmware 4.2!

Instructions on Jailbreaking 4.2

1. Download redsn0w from here: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/1452044444/redsn0w-limera1n-fun

2. Your device will be on 4.2 but when you run redsn0w you will select firmware 4.1 on your computer. You can download firmware 4.1 for your iPhone here. Just follow the instuctions with redsn0w and you’ll be jailbroken. Remember, Cydia is not yet working on 4.2.

Apple has released the firmware promised to fix the signal bar issues with the new iPhone 4. To make this clear, the problem, for me, seems to be a hardware issue. When I hold the iPhone in any way that covers the gap between the two antennas, I lose signal strength. I’ve demoed this in the video below. Now, does the firmware fix the problem? Let’s find out! I’ve also recorded what happens when holding the iPhone in the same way on the new firmware, 4.0.1.

As you can see in the video, the problem has not been solved by a software update. Also, the new antenna bars are ugly…

Apple claims the update “Improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display” and is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

The download is 579.3 MB for iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 4.

GeoHot was recently doing a presentation at a conference and talked all about the iPhone exploits. Be ready, he goes into some great detail about it but here’s the key phrase:

“There is also, I hinted to this a couple times, an unreleased exploit in every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in the bootrom to get code execution. And you know if I ever do another jailbreak, that’s the exploit I have. If you’ve seen I posted like a picture of 4.0 jailbroken. I posted my iPad jailbroken. All before Spirit was released. And I used like a completely different set of exploits which maybe when iPhone 4 comes out will be out.”

We have known for a week or so that the 4.0 firmware is jailbreakable however, the Dev-Team has now released a beta of the jailbreak. This jailbreak is specifically for “developers of jailbroken apps.” Like all jailbreaks, it has restrictions. Below is some info from the Dev-Team.

What is it?

This is a beta release of redsn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. Nothing new is revealed to Apple, and it’s not applicable to the iPad. Don’t go near it if you use yellowsn0w, ultrasn0w, or blacksn0w.

Please not that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things “broken” with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now (that’s the real reason we showed “Veency” in the 4.0 jailbreak demo video last week, instead of say MobileTerminal.app, which is broken!). This beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps (like MobileTerminal.app!) to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it’s meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You’ll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don’t pirate Apple software.

Anyone other than developers of jailbroken apps porting their software to 4.0beta1 should still be using our previously-released redsn0ws for 3.0 through 3.1.3

What devices, platforms, and FW versions are supported?

This BETA release supports:

- iPhone 3G only (for now)
- Mac OSX only (for now)
- the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That’s because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

For more information on how to use the jailbreak and for the download link… hit up the Dev-Team’s wikee page. Remember, this jailbreak is targeted at developers and not your “normal” jailbreaker!
