When I heard that Google had announced that, in the next few days, they will be rolling out the ability to edit Google docs from the mobile browser… I have to admit that my ears perked up. I know this might seem totally old school but I use Google docs for my grocery list (I know! There are a ton of apps in the App Store for grocery lists but I can’t help it… I always go back to Google docs). Anyway, I would LOVE (LOVE, LOVE… did I mention LOVE) to see an easier way edit my Google docs while out and about. Though, after checking out the demo video, I’m not sure if this is going to be the improvement I was looking for. I guess I will have to wait and see what I think about the new feature. Honestly I would just like to see an official Google Docs app in the App Store. Below is more info about the new Edit feature including a demo video (done on a droid!!).

With Google Docs, we’re always trying to make you more productive—and part of that means making it possible for you to get things done from anywhere, at anytime. That’s why we’re excited that the new documents editor now supports editing on your mobile browser. We’re rolling this out over the next few days.

That means that…

    • You can work on that important memo…while on the bus or train to work.
    • If you’re behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
    • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you’ll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
    • …and the list goes on!

It’s easy to get started: visit docs.google.com in a browser on a supported device, and select the document you want to edit. Then, when you’re viewing it, press the Edit button to switch to the mobile editor.

In the next few days, we’re rolling this out to English-language users around the world on Android with Froyo (version 2.2) and on iOS devices (version 3.0+) including the iPad. We’ll be adding support for other languages soon. And as before, we also support editing of spreadsheets from your mobile device’s browser.

Demo Video:

    • Access your Google Voice account right from your iPhone.
    • Receive push notifications for new text or voicemail messages.
    • Send free text messages to U.S. numbers and make international calls at cheap rates.
    • Listen to your voicemail, read transcripts and manage your Google Voice inbox.
    • Display your Google Voice number as caller ID when making calls.
    • Call contacts from your iPhone Address Book or enter new numbers on the dialpad.

I haven’t had a chance to test the app a ton but what I have tested works nicely. I also find the app to be clean and easy to use. I think I’m going to like this!! What I’m really interested in is whether or not people will start using Google Voice instead of their carrier.

You will need a Google Voice number in order to use the application. If you do not have one and are interested in acquiring one… you can request one here. It does not cost anything to acquire a Google Voice number however, it is currently only available in the US. Check out the screenshots below.

When searching for something in Google, using Safari on your device, you are now able to select an iPhone Apps option in the More drop down menu. When you select the iPhone Apps option, it displays a list of iPhone apps relevant to your Google search. The icon, price, star rating, number of reviews, and short description are displayed for each app result. If you select one of the apps, it brings you directly to that application in the App Store on your device. Pretty cool. Check out the screenshots below.

From what I can see, it has an extra mic and extra flash, otherwise I’ll keep my iPhone. I do like the notification system better on the Android software, but even with this high power of a device, the software is still laggy and glitchy. This is part 1 so as more videos are released, we’ll try to get them here.

As you can imagine… I love blogs. I not only love my informational, news, iPhone, hacking blogs but I also love my mom, cooking, baking, decorating blogs. I know… it can be a strange combination at times. So, like every blogaholic, I need a good RSS reader application. I have found Byline to nicely suit my needs and after today’s update to the app (version 3.0)… I just had to pass it along.

I’m not going to walk you through every feature and detail of this app (you can check out the below App Store Description for that) but, I will point out a few things that I like about it.

First, I like how easily and completely is syncs with Google. Byline has two-way syncing. If you do something in Google Reader, it syncs to the app. If you do something in the app, it syncs to Google Reader. This includes everything from read/unread articles, sharing, starring, notes… etc.

Second, it allows for offline browsing. Byline will cache up to 1000 articles that can then later be read while offline. Also, if you have more than 50% battery, you are able to open the app, lock your device (without closing the app) and it will continue to cache while your device is locked. You can now also choose (thanks to the update) to have specific feeds cache or not.

Third, I like the built in browser. If there is a link in an article that I would like to check out, I can do so without leaving Byline. I also love that I can view the full article right within Byline… I do that a lot to view comments on an article. Another new feature is that you are also able to email an article without leaving the app… very nice.

Forth, I like all the features. I like that I can quickly mark ‘All As Read’, copy the link, tweet an article, view the full article, see separate feeds/folders… etc. The app does a good job of having enough features in the Settings to keep me satisfied.

The only thing I would still like to see is the ability to add a new RSS feed from the Byline app itself. Other than that… Byline is by far the app I use most often throughout my day (well… facebook might give it a run for it’s money!).

Check out the App Store Description below to see a full list of all of Byline’s features (and there are many!).

Right now a few things don’t work and it’s a tedious task to get it installed. What’s new is that it’s now running on an iPhone 3G. Before it was running on only the 1st Gen iPhone.

The hope is that you should soon be able to carry around your first-generation iPhone or iPhone 3G running Android and use it just as normally as you would any other Android phone.

New Features:
- many under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes
- the Wi-Fi driver has been fleshed out with all the Android-specific extensions
- added an Android icon to the boot menu to make it more easily accessible
- groundwork laid for audio support on the 3G, so support for audio in Linux/Android will be coming in a few days.
- improved power management and backlight control very soon

Google has updated their mobile (and desktop) search to incorporate a few more features. Now, when searching via Google on your device, you will notice a little arrow icon to the left of the search bar. When selected, you are given additional search options allowing you the ability to narrow down your search. These includes; the ability to view only News, Updates or Products for your search results as well as the option to view search results by time (Latest, Past 24 hours, Past week, Past year or Specific date range).

There is also an option to switch between 'Standard Results' and results that include 'Images from the Page'. If you switch to the 'Images from the Page' option, the page will load displaying images contained within each search results. However, if you tap on an image, it will bring you to that webpage... it does not display the image larger.

Currently, the new search features are only available in the US on the iPhone and Android devices but, Google does plan on rolling out the new look to more locations and devices. Check out what Google has to say, screenshots and Google's "tutorial" video below.

When it comes to mobile search, we strive to not only give you the same comprehensiveness and relevance as when searching with Google on your computer, but also a consistent look, feel, and overall user experience. So today, as we roll out a new look for Google Search results on your computer, we are happy to announce similar changes to Google Search results for mobile.

When you go to Google.com in the US on your iPhone or Android-powered device, and enter a search, you can now tap on the button to the left of the search box on the results page to see a new search options menu. Then, selecting any item in the menu will refine your search. For example, if you are looking for recent results for "Mother's day gift", simply tap the "Past week" option.

You may notice that when the menu expands, the search results slide off screen to the right. Note that you can still interact with them and see them in full just by panning to the right. Also, there are some additional menu options, like "News" and "Products". In the weeks to come, we will be supporting more devices and locales, and expanding the number of options available.
