Earlier this week, TomTom updated their app allowing the TomTom applications to be installed on the first gen iPhone and the first and second gen iPod touches. Previously, the app could only be installed on the iPhone 3G and 3GS. With the update to the app comes a new product… a TomTom Car Kit for the iPod touch.

The iPod touch Car Kit is priced at $99.95 ($20 less than the iPhone Car Kit). The Kit is currently not available and based on the iPhone Car Kit who knows when they will have it ready! Just kidding! They say it is coming soon and it can already be seen on TomTom’s website.
google_ad_height = 60;
//-->

Note: Both the first gen iPhone and the iPod touch require a Car Kit because they do not contain the needed GPS receiver. So, if you want TomTom’s GPS on your first gen iPhone or iPod touch, you have no choice but to buy the TomTom app for $99.99 and the Car Kit for $99.95.

Developer Description

“To play Seek ‘n Spell, grab some friends and head outside to the nearest park or other large open space. Start up the game, and your phone will display a map of your location and place letters all around your playing field. Run around to collect the letters, and when your location matches the letter location, you pick up the tile. You can have 10 letters at a time, and the object of the game is to build as many words as you can. The more letters in your words, the more points you get, and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.”

Ok, I was going to wait to tell you guys about this app once I had a copy of it but, I find it very intriguing so I thought I would pass it along now! Seek ‘n Spell is a, “a real-time GPS-based word building competition.” Honestly, I have not seen an application quite like this one. The object of the game is to create words by collecting letters. The catch is the letters are located outdoors. You collect letters by finding the letters based on GPS location. Your iPhone’s screen displays where each letter is located and then you must run (or walk) to that location in order to obtain the letter. You want to collect letters that will create the longest word…think real life Scrabble. To get a true feel of the application you will want to check out the demo video below.

Seek ‘n Spell has been submitted to the App Store but is still waiting approval so, keep your eye out for it. For more info check out their website.

Ok, last night I was driving to a dinner party (that happened to be women only…meaning Doug was not driving me there) and I realized that I have a favorite feature on my iPhone. Granted there are many features that I love about my iPhone but, last night I realized I have a favorite…GPS. The fact that you can search for a restaurant and then get directions to that restaurant based on your current location is awesome in itself but, then to watch as your little blue dot moves along the route is just AMAZING!! Before GPS on my iPhone…I used to have to wonder if I had accidentally merged onto a new street and was no longer going the correct direction. Not any more…now I can just sit back, relax and watch my blue dot! In my area the GPS is wonderfully accurate and updates very quickly!

So, back to my story, last night on my way to this dinner party, I had two sets of directions; paper and my iPhone. I decided to give the paper directions a shot. Well, needless to say, I got lost (which, if you ask Doug, doesn’t take much). When I was on the brink of panic…lost in a city I don’t normally travel to and already ten minutes late for the dinner party…I remembered my iPhone!! YAY!! Looking at my iPhone I realized my iPhone’s directions took me a slightly different way then the paper directions I had. And, thanks to my blue dot, I was able to quickly get on track with my iPhone’s directions and within minutes I was at the Tournament Club pulling into my parking spot!! That is when I realized that my favorite feature on the iPhone is the GPS!

Let me know in the comments if you have a favorite feature on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

I just realized that we have never done a review of NavizonGPS. So, here is a full review of the application. NavizonGPS is “a wireless positioning system that works a little bit like a GPS, only that it uses Cellular Towers and Wifi access points instead of satellites. In addition to being a wireless position system, Navizon offers cool features like the Directions, Buddy finder, Geotags and many more.”

When you first open NavizonGPS, after installing it, you will need to set-up an account. You will get a pop-up with the options to select Ok to set-up an account or to select Cancel if you already have an account. If you select Ok, it will open a browser in which you can register for an account. After you have created your account, you can go back to the application on your SpringBoard. This time when you open the application, select Cancel. This will bring you to the main menu.

Here you will see the options; Locate Me Now, Enable Navizon Bar Plugin for Maps, Enable Buddy Tracking and Enable Locate-by-SMS. The Locate Me Now Option will locate your current position and then automatically open it in Google Maps. I find this application to be very accurate for me!

The Navizon Bar Plugin for Maps option will add a custom Navizon tool bar to your Google Maps. The tool bar allows you to launch the Navizon application by selecting the tool icon, search for your Buddies by selects the icon with two people on it and start the GPS (moving location) by selecting the Play icon. The GPS option will update your location every 15 seconds. To pause the moving location options, tap the pause icon. The Navizon tool bar will show up in Google Maps all the time, not just when launching Google Maps from Navizon. You can minimize the tool bar by tapping on the very right of it. To maximize it, tap it again.

The Tracking for Buddies and Alerts Option allows you to appear visible to your buddies. Which means, if you turn Appear Visible on, and one of your buddies selects search for buddies on their iPhone, you will show up in Google Maps on their iPhone. Only people you have approved as buddies are able to view your location and only when you have that option turned on. It is the same if you search for buddies on your iPhone, it will only display the location of your buddies who currently have Appear Visible turned on.

The Locate-by-SMS is a very cool feature. When enabled, it allows you to send a text to your iPhone that contains a keyword and it will send a text back with the current location of your iPhone. To set it up, you will need to turn Locate-by-SMS on and then you will need to enter a keyword into the Keyword section. You do not want it to by a common word because if someone sends you a text with that word in it, it would send them back a text with your current location in it. So, you want it to be a keyword you would only uses with the purpose of finding your iPhone. This is a great feature for if you have lost your iPhone or if you iPhone has been stolen or even to check up on your kids!! See Demo Video below.

Once you have everything set-up in the menu, you can select Locate Me Now. Every time you open Navizon, it will automatically Locate your current position. You can stop it by selecting the Cancel option in the upper right corner of the launch page. You can also have it automatically bring you to the Directions feature in Google Maps by selecting the Directions option in the lower left corner. It will locate current position and put those coordinates in the start field and you can then enter where you would like the directions to end. There is also one more option on the Locate Me Now launch page and that is Buddies. If you select Buddies it the lower left corner, it will locate your current location in Google Maps as well as all your Buddies.

Back in the main menu of the application, you can set-up your full account and get a lot more information by selecting the Account option and then the Manage Account on the Web option. NavizonGPS is available through the Ste Packaging source.

One of the biggest features of the new iPhone 3G is GPS. This includes live, updated tracking on Google Maps. There is even news today of TomTom preparing an app for the App Store.

“Our navigation system runs on the iPhone already,”

The GPS in the iPhone is not your normal GPS. With the iPhone you get A-GPS or assisted GPS. The iPhone uses it’s internet connection through the cell network to get information about where the sattelites are currently located and makes a faster connection.

Have you ever noticed that when in a building, GPS can’t get signal to the satellites. The iPhone 3G also uses the info from the cell phone towers and wifi routers to give you location information when GPS is not available.

Not only does the GPS pinpoint your location, it tracks you as you move. Using the stock Maps application you will get a blue dot that move and tracks with you as you move. This GPS and tracking info is available to the built in apps and apps in the App Store. So you can now geotag your pictures! Here’s a video of what the tracking looks like:

NOTE: This video has no audio.

Finally, the GPS is built so it doesn’t drain your battery. It only turns on when needed and is built to load up quickly.

If you read our news page you already know most of this info because everyone is talking about it. Now of course Apple hasn’t announced this but there are so many signs like this internal memo from UK carrier O2:

“Due to the highly successful sales of the Apple 8GB iPhone, supply chains have run out of stock and will not be replenishing stock of this product as it has now gone to end of life.”

The 3G iPhone will most likely be announced during the WWDC, June 9th – 13th with sizes of 16GB & 32GB and minor design changes. Rumor lists include true GPS, thinner design and camera in front (video chat).
