When you tap on the application icon, the app will find your IP address and display it in the middle of the screen. There is also a refresh option in the upper right hand corner. One of these types of apps is a must have on my iPhone! It is so much easier to just open an application and get your IP address then to go into your Settings, select WiFi, wait for it to find all the available WiFi connections, select the WiFi you are connected to, wait for it to load all the info and then finally get your IP address! If you do a lot of SSHing into your iPhone, this is a must have application!

When this app came out Brooke asked me right away, what’s dyndns. I said, “I should probably do this review.” DynDNS is a website that provides a lot of services. The service I use from them and also the service linked with this app is the ability to make a domain name point to a IP address that isn’t always the same. For example, my home internet is a DSL connection. The IP address changes every once in a while and if I want to remote desktop into it from somewhere else I’d have to know the IP address. With DynDNS and iDynDNS you can create a unique name that you’ll remember and it will point you to your iPhone.

First I went to dyndns.org to create an account. You’ll want to go to this page to get started: https://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/. Once you set up an account you’ll want to enter in your info. For the host name type something you’ll remember and pick a domain from the drop down. This whole thing will now be your link to your iPhone’s IP instead of a number. So like myiphone.homeip.net instead of 192.168.2.12. Pick “Host with IP” then enter your iPhone’s current IP address. This should show up at the bottom of the iDynDNS app.

The annoying thing about this app is that if you’re on a wireless local network and your IP is a local address like starting with 192.168 it detects this address which won’t allow you to connect to the iPhone from another location. It needs the option to detect the outside IP address or the local IP address.

A really kewl feature is that it keeps a symbol up in the status bar when the app is running. There needs to be a feature to disable this in case you already have too many things up there.

I couldn’t get this to work when on Edge because it wouldn’t detect an IP address but it works great at home, which I think is the main purpose of this app. I can now set my SSH program to the domain name I chose and don’t have to worry about finding my IP address every time. This is worth installing if you use SSH a lot otherwise you probably don’t need it. iDynDNS is available through the ModMyiFone source.

sipgate is an application that allows you to make calls, when on WiFi, using voice over IP. To sign-up for the free account, you will need to go to sipgate.com and select the Free Download button. This will bring you to a page where you will need to enter some info. Once you have done that, you will get an email with your sipgate number and password. Now, you can go into Installer and install the sipgate application through the sipgate repository. If you would like to read their Terms of Service before you install it, you can see them HERE.

After you install the application and have it open for the first time, it will say authentication failed…this is because you have not configured your account yet. To do so, tap on the configure Account button in the upper right corner. Here you will enter your sipgate number as the username (that is the number you received in the email) and your password. Make sure you check the password in the email becuase it cuts the password off after 8 characters…so, double check to make sure you have the password entered correctly. Once you have entered that information, you can select sipgate VoIP in the upper left corner. Now, just type in a phone number (with the area code) to make a call.<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-2945167545775968";

Here was my experience using sipgate. I was able to call Doug’s regular cell phone number with no problem (they provide 111 minutes of free calls to domestic phones). However, neither Doug or I were able to receive an incoming call to sipgate. This is what the developer has to say about receiving incoming calls.

At this time there is no meaningful support for incoming calls. While you can answer incoming calls whenever sipgate is running on your iPhone it does not alert you, when the VoIP software is not running. The reason being the iPhone’s high power consumption while Wi-Fi is active. If we just suspended the software to monitor incoming calls, your battery would be empty in no time. We realized this is a halfhearted solution. We are working on improving this release.

We were unable to receive calls to sipgate even when the application was open.

You can go to sipgate.com and login to see how many of the 111 minutes you have used, how many minutes you have remaining and change your password. They also have a nice F.A.Q Page that is definitely worth checking out. There is also a place to enter information from any VoIP service provider and use them through sipgate. Let me know in the comments what you think of this application.

Note: The sipgate icon in the lower left corner of the application does not do anything.
