iPhone 4, 3GS & 3G Unlock – ultrasn0w 1.0-1

The iPhone 4 unlock is ready! Remember, unlocking is different from jailbreaking. Unlocking lets you use your iPhone on other carriers. Of course, in the US the only other carrier that works with the iPhone is T-Mobile. This unlock is done by first jailbreaking the iPhone allowing applications to be installed that Apple doesn’t approve of. Then, in Cydia, you will need to add this source: repo666.ultrasn0w.com Then you can install ultrasn0w.

ultrasn0w 1.0-1 is compatible with iPhone4 on baseband 01.59 and 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04.

iPhone 3GS vs. iPhone 3G Speed Test

Yesterday, another friend of mine with an iPhone 3GS recorded a speed test between my iPhone 3GS and Brooke’s iPhone 3G. Now Brooke’s iPhone was recently jailbroken but this is still pretty accurate.

Firmware 3.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Specifics *Updated

Below is the basic information about how jailbreaking and unlocking will work on the 3.0 firmware for the 1st gen iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS.

Important Note: Upgrading to firmware 3.0 will break your current jailbreak and unlock (see below for more specific information). Also, many of the current jailbroke applications do not work on firmware 3.0.

1st Gen iPhone’s:
You can upgrade to the 3.0 firmware however, you will lose your current jailbreak ~~and your unlock~~ . You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak which will hopefully be some time today. ~~You will also be able to unlock your iPhone when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. So, if you upgrade to 3.0, you will not be able to unlock your iPhone until Friday.~~ Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

Update: According to the comments (and THIS iClarified article), it seems the you will keep your unlock on a 1st gen iPhone even when you upgrade to firmware 3.0. However, there are a few stipulations. Below are those stipulations according to the iClarified article.

“HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone.

You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not.

If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.”

Note: The following features of the 3.0 firmware will not work on a 1st Gen iPhone:
    • Send and receive photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS
    • Internet Tethering over USB and Bluetooth
    • Stereo Bluetooth

iPhone 3G (2nd Gen iPhones):
You can also upgrade to firmware 3.0 however, you will also lose your jailbreak and your unlock. You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak (hopefully today). You will also be able to to unlock your iPhone 3G, on the 3.0 firmware, when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. yellowsn0w will not work on the 3.0 firmware. Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

iPhone 3GS:
We do not know much about this yet, we will know more about jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 3GS on Friday when it is released.

This is a video demo of ultrasnow, a software unlock for the iPhone 3G running firmware 3.0. Unlocking your iPhone lets you use the iPhone with other carriers like T-Mobile in the US. (This does not work for Verizon) The plan for release is this Friday through Cydia.

I was on Apple’s website yesterday checking out all the new specs of the iPhone 3G S and looking at some comparisons with the iPhone 3G. While doing so, I noticed a little mistake in the Power and Battery section of the tech specs for the iPhone 3G S. Below is what it says on the website and what they really meant it to say.

Info currently on the website:
Talk time:
• Up to 12 hours on 3G
• Up to 5 hours on 2G

What it is supposed to say:
Talk time:
• Up to 5 hours on 3G
• Up to 12 hours on 2G

Not a huge deal, human error. Though, it would be sweet if we really got 12 hours of talk time on 3G!!

We are torn on this one! Doug has installed and used yellowsn0w…I have not. I honestly do not have an exact reason for why I have not installed yellowsn0w mostly because I just do not have a need to. Doug, being the techy that he is, has installed yellosn0w. Though, he has had a few issues with it affecting his connectivity to AT&T. So, I think I will hold off for a while! iPhone 3G Unlock yellowsn0w Sources Now Available!!

Colorware available for iPhone 3G

Doug wrote an article about Colorware, a company that will permanently color your iPhone, not too long ago. However, at the time, the process was not yet available for the iPhone 3G. Well, it is now available! Below is a break-down of the color options, price and an example screenshot.

Back – $150
Frame – $20
Button – $20
SIM Card Tray – $10 (this is a new option)
Earbuds – $10
iPhone Dock – $20

You do not have the option to choose a color for the bottom half of the back of the iPhone 3G (obviously) but, you also do not have the option to choose a color for the Logo on the back of the iPhone 3G…both of which were available with the first gen iPhone. I’m not sure why you can not color the Apple Logo like you could with the first gen. It is too bad because that is the part that has the most scratches on my iPhone 3G!

Example:
