I’ve seen lots of news that RadioShack was selling iPhones for $50 less than the normal pricing. This includes the 16GB iPhone 4 for $150, the 32GB iPhone 4 for $249 and the 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49. I thought it might only be for a new line of service but I thought I’d give it a shot. Brooke still has my old 3GS and never has had the new model because she just always gets my old phone. So, I thought this would be a great Christmas present. I know, typical guy getting his wife technology for Christmas…

Anyway, I called the store and they said this pricing is available for any current line with an upgrade available not just news lines of service. They didn’t have any in the store but they said they could have it shipped to our house within 3-5 business days. The annoying part was they said they would activate the new phone right away and her old phone would stop working right away. I didn’t really like that idea but for $50 less, it seemed worth it.

When I went into the store to order the phone, they said the warehouse was sold out and they couldn’t even order one. They even tried calling some stores that showed one in stock but they were already sold. They took my name and number and said they would call me if one came in or the online store/warehouse restocked.

Later that night, I got a call from the store saying the district manager was somewhere else in the state at a store that had one and would bring it back to my store if I could come in tonight to pick it up. Unfortunately, I had an event to run and could not make it in until morning. They were ok with that and so I headed it at 9:00am to pick it up.

When I got to the store they had my iPhone and all went pretty well. They were their annoying selves, asking over and over if I wanted to buy Apple Care, a screen protector, charger, or case. My total came out to be about $155. The activation fee will come out of my bill with AT&T later. They didn’t open the box and activate the phone there in the store but my wife’s iPhone was deactivated. That was a fail because I thought I might be able to tell my wife they were sold out and surprise her on Christmas. Anyway, I gave her her phone and she loves it!

So, $50 off, definitely worth it. Good luck finding one though :)

I’ve had a few people who only want to jailbreak their iPhone just so they could use FaceTime anywhere. Right now it only works on WiFi but with 3G Unrestrictor it will run on 3G and even EDGE. Every once in a while I would have problems keeping the call connected. It seemed, after about a minute, that the call would freeze and then disconnect randomly. It also seemed like it was happening with anyone and anywhere.

Well, I think I figured it out! Both of my grandparents have iPhone 4s and they live in 3G and have no WiFi so both are jailbroken and using 3G Unrestrictor while I also am jailbroken using 3G Unrestrictor. The difference for me was I was on WiFi during the calls. When I was talking with my grandpa tonight I decided I gotta figure this out! After about 5 calls, all 5 dropped around the 1 minute mark. Then I tried something crazy (sarcasm). Since I was on WiFi I thought I would try turning off 3G Unrestrictor. If you use SBSettings, you can just toggle it off before the call. Tada! I called both my grandma and grandpa again with FaceTime and had no drops!

So, the solution again. When jailbroken and have 3G Unrestrictor installed, toggle it off when making the call over WiFi. If you are still having troubles or have another fix, please let us know in the comments.

The iPhone 4 unlock is ready! Remember, unlocking is different from jailbreaking. Unlocking lets you use your iPhone on other carriers. Of course, in the US the only other carrier that works with the iPhone is T-Mobile. This unlock is done by first jailbreaking the iPhone allowing applications to be installed that Apple doesn’t approve of. Then, in Cydia, you will need to add this source: repo666.ultrasn0w.com Then you can install ultrasn0w.

I’ve been having trouble watching YouTube videos on my iPhone 4 and my iPad. I have an Apple AirPort Extreme router and it’s the newest model with the most recent firmware. I was excited when the new firmware updates for the iPhone and iPad were released that were supposed to fix the YouTube problem. It didn’t fix my problem so I went looking elsewhere for a fix. Here’s some of the things people have tried that fixed it. What fixed it for me was turning off both the 802.11n and turning off my guest network on the router. Note: many people have commented about the 802.11n on the iPhone 4 but know this: the 802.11n on the AirPort Extreme runs at 5Mhz and the iPhone 4 runs at 2.4Mhz so they are not compatible. The iPad however does use the AirPort’s 5Mhz.

Try one or more of the following fixes:

- Turn off 802.11n on your AirPort Extreme router.
- Turn off the guest network on your AirPort Extreme router.
- Change the DNS settings in your iPhone settings for that router to OpenDNS settings of 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 or Google’s DNS settings of 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4\n- Turn off auto brightness or, if your brightness is on the lowest setting, move it up some (weird idea if you ask me)
- Reset network settings in you Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Let us know in the comments if you’re having problems and if any of the above worked for you or if you have another fix.

Anyone who has purchased a bumper case from Apple will receive a refund. If you haven’t gotten one yet, you’ll get one for free. Apple will also be providing a few cases from other manufactures since they will not be able keep up with the demand for Apple’s bumpers. We’re not sure yet what will happen if you bought your iPhone case from someone like AT&T. We also aren’t sure if the refund will be cash or in store credit at the Apple Store like they did with the 1st Gen iPhone after lowering the price $200 and refunding $100 in store credit. Apple will have more details on how to get your free case or refund within the next week.

Apple has released the firmware promised to fix the signal bar issues with the new iPhone 4. To make this clear, the problem, for me, seems to be a hardware issue. When I hold the iPhone in any way that covers the gap between the two antennas, I lose signal strength. I’ve demoed this in the video below. Now, does the firmware fix the problem? Let’s find out! I’ve also recorded what happens when holding the iPhone in the same way on the new firmware, 4.0.1.

Later in the day, while sitting at a restaurant in a 3G area, I noticed I only had 1 bar. I thought that was a little strange and then I noticed something. I was holding it with my left hand and my palm was covering the slit between the metal of the external antennas.

After moving my hand, within about 20 seconds, my signal started to increase to 5 bars. I even did it a few more times and it was definitely having a problem. I took a couple screenshots to show the difference.

I also did a speed test and got half the speed when my hand was touching that part of the antenna system.

What’s happening is the iPhone has two antennas. One for the 3G & EDGE and the other for WiFi, Bluetooth, & GPS. When you touch that gap in the metal you are kinda connecting the antennas and there is a signal problem. It doesn’t happen on the other side because it’s actually connected over there. The right has the gap just to match the other side but on the inside they are actually connected. See below.

Now what are we going to do? Well, first, Steve Jobs replied to an email about the problem with, “Just avoid holding it in that way.” Then, Engadget posts this image saying, “Hey Apple, you’re holding it wrong.” These are screen captures from demos from Apple themselves.

Then Steve responds to another email about the problem with, “There is no reception issue. Stay tuned.” Some have suggested there will be a firmware update of 4.0.1 on Monday while others think iPhone Bumper Cases will be free to all iPhone 4 owners.

We’ll we’re here in line at the Apple Store at Jordan Creek Mall in Des Moines, Iowa. I woke up at about midnight and got everything all packed up. I’ve got a friend with me and we headed out. I’ve got a MacBook Pro with an AT&T cellular card, an iPad 3G, and my iPhone 3GS all with a lot of battery power and backup battery. Before I left home I checked out Twitter to see if anyone was here yet. Here’s the pic I found:

So far we’ve heard one crying baby and a guy throwing up so this should be an interesting night. It seems like there’s a decent mix of preorder and nonpreorders. I came to the store earlier in the day and they confirmed there were enough iPhones that I would get mine. I’m still waiting in line :) I’ll keep you update through this blog and Ustream live video streaming later in the morning.

Below are few pics of the line this morning:
