Then I remembered that I had backed up to my computer before upgrading. Could I somehow extract the backup into uncompressed data and see my files? Yes! You can! I even found a free app to help with the process. (Note: It does not work if you use encryption to protect your files.)

Here are the steps I took to restore my files:

1. Download the app called iPhone/iPod Touch Backup Extractor found at supercrazyawesome.com.

2. Run the app and click “Read Backups”.

3. Select the backup you want to restore files from and click choose.

4. Find the app you are trying to extract files from. This will work for any app but we’re looking for Pages, Numbers or Keynote. They’ll look like com.apple.Numbers. Highlight it and click Extract.

5. Find that extracted file using Finder. Right click on it and select “Show Package Contents”. This will show you the folders inside the file. Find the Documents folder and your files should be in there!

6. Now we need to send the files back to the cloud. Log into icloud.com and select iWork. Then, in the top right corner click the little gear and select “Upload Document”. Now just pick your files and upload them and they will push to all your devices logged into that iCloud account!

Simple and easy. Install the hack in Cydia, open Byline, pull to sync! So much more cool than tapping the sync button!

The app is instantly activated when you install it in Cydia. There is no icon or settings for this hack. To deactivate the hack, you would need to uninstall it in Cydia (or use SBSettings Mobile Substrate Addon feature)… but seriously why would you need to deactivate it! I had no issues when I tested the app. You can get Pull To Refresh Safari via the BigBoss source.

One of my favorite features of the application is that it immediately opens to a map of all the garage sales surroundings your current location. Sooooo helpful! I also really like that you can search for specific items you would like to find at a garage sale. So, if you are looking for Legos, you can search for Legos and it will display all the garage sales that have that key word in their description. The garage sales are pulled from craigslist which allows the ability to search the garage sale’s listing for keywords. Very cool. iGarageSale is everything I want in a garage sale application… in an easy-to-use interface. Guess it doesn’t get much better than that.

What I like about the app:
    • The ability to view garage sales that are taking place that day or that week
    • You can mark specific sales as “favorites” which then displays them as a different color on the map so you can easily identify them
    • You can hide garage sales from the map once you have been to them… which I LOVE… I always forget which ones I have already been to!
    • You can get direction from your current location to a specific garage sale
    • You can select each garage sale and get specific information about them
    • You can E-mail, facebook or twitter a map of your favorited garage sales

There is a free version of the app but I made the plunge and bought the full version… which I’m glad I did. The full version works on both the iPhone and the iPad.

I’m not super huge on Social Networking (unlike my social networkingaholic husband) but I really like this application. It is so intuitive and there are enough settings to allow me to customize the application how I would like it. It is extremely easy to find my friends who have the application… it searches Contacts, facebook and twitter in a very user friendly interface. It is also easy to stay informed on who is commenting and “liking” your photos through either push notifications or a nice little, non-intrusive pop-up when you open the application. And because it is an photo networking application… it keeps me interested.

The only thing I would like to see is more people using it!

PhotoProtect does have a few settings (located in the stock Settings app) including the ability to turn the hack on/off (turning the hack off will allow you to delete photos again) and the ability to type what you would like the pop-up and button to say when trying to delete a photo.

Note: I did have one instance when I had the hack turned on and it still deleted my photo. I went and turned the hack off and then back on again and it worked fine after that.

Other than that one glitch, the app seems to work like it should. You can get PhotoProtect via the BigBoss source.

Note: Like with all firmware updates, if you have a jailbroke device, you will want to hold off on updating when the new iOS is released… especially with the upgrade to iOS 4.3. Below is a warning from BigBoss.

March 11th is the due date for the next iOS release. This is to support ipad2. As always, I give my standard warning not to update and wait for the jailbreak release. This time, I am giving some extra caution, however.

With 4.3 comes apple’s implementation of address space layout randomization (ASLR). In short, this will mess up the way mobile substrate works. You will need a new mobile substrate in order to use your favorite tweaks such as winterboard, sbsettings, bitesms, folder enhancer, etc. So you should definitely avoid 4.3 until an “official” jailbreak is released for it.

iOS 4.3 Features:
    • Safari Performance Improvements – Implementation of Nitro JavaScript engine. Allowing JavaScript to run up to twice as fast as in iOS 4.2.

    • iTunes Home Sharing – “Now you can play your entire iTunes library from anywhere in the house. If it’s on your Mac or PC, you can play it on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over a shared Wi-Fi network. And not just music. Watch a movie or TV show. Play a podcast. Or listen to an audiobook. On whichever device you want — without having to download or sync.”

    • AirPlay Enhancements – Will now allow streaming of videos from your Photos app to your Apple TV as well as “AirPlay-enabled apps and websites.”

    • iPad Side Switch Update – You will now be able to choose (in the Settings app) if you would like the switch on the side of the iPad to lock the screen rotation or mute the volume.

    • Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4 – This will allow you to turn an iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3 into a personal hotspot. “Personal Hotspot and share your cellular data connection with your Mac, PC, iPad, or other Wi-Fi-capable device. You can share your connection with up to five devices at once over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB — with up to three of those connections using Wi-Fi.”

    • FaceTime for iPad – iOS 4.3 will also give the iPad the ability to FaceTime. Allowing the ability to FaceTime between two iPads, between an iPad and an iPhone, or between an iPad and a Mac.

    • Photo Booth

This hack does not add an icon to your SpringBoard or any settings in the stock Settings application. It is automatically activated as soon as it is installed in Cydia. To remove the hack, you would need to uninstall it in Cydia or use the Mobile Substrate Addons option in SBSettings.
