Since it began as a concept back in September, there hasn’t been much to tell, but it seems that that one and only Jay Freeman (better known as saurik) is helping to make this thing happen. So, it’s time to get the information rolling. According to a recent tweet (see below), a beta of the lock screen mod will hit Cydia next week.

“Our iPhone lockscreen will be called Element. Fingers are crossed for a beta next week.” – via @gteehan

I don’t know about you guys but, I would love to have the perfect lock screen mod! I’m currently using LockInfo and like it. I can’t wait to check out Element… it looks like it is going to be pretty sweet.

Below is some info about the mod via the dev’s blog.

It seems the screens we shared of an alternative home screen for the iPhone created some buzz. We had no intention of taking it any further than a blog post but we figured this was something worth seeing through.

We got in touch with Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik. He’s the guy behind Cydia, an application for jailbroken iPhones that allows you to browse and download apps outside of actual app store. He’s crazy smart, passionate and geeky — three things we love here at T+L. Jay is going to be instrumental in making this happen.

If you haven’t already figured it out, getting this on your phone will require you to jailbreak it. That may not be an appealing option for many, but for the 2 million plus out there who have already done it and for those that are comfortable with doing it, this can be a reality.

The app and the underlying technology to make it happen are still in development so what comes out the other side will differ from what we originally proposed. The biggest change will initially be that it will render only on the lock screen. We went down this road for a number of reasons, primarily because of its relative ease of implementation, though there’s nothing easy about it. Jay is creating a framework to write custom lock screens called Cydget. Our concept will act as the guinea pig.

No word on an actual release date yet due to a last minute crash bug, but from what we hear it’s not far off. We’ll make an official announcement once it’s available. You can follow @teehanlax @gteehan and @saurik if you’re looking for more detail since we tend to tweet about this stuff more frequently than we blog about it.

Normally, the lockscreen will stay on for 5 seconds before turning off. This mod is great for those of you who have lockscreen mods that display email or weather or text messages… etc. It just gives you more time to view your lock screen.

When I tested this mod, it worked perfectly. After it was installed, my lockscreen stayed on for 60 seconds before going off. This is a code mod so you will not see an icon on your SpringBoard. You can get 60 Seconds Lock Screen via the BigBoss source.

Lockdown, is an application that allows you to password protect other applications (stock, App Store and jailbroke) on your iPhone or iPod Touch. I haven’t done a review of this Lockdown since it was first released. However, I received an email saying that it has been updated and is now working with the 3.0 firmware (which it is).

The UI of the app has changed a little since my first review of the app but, other than that…it is basically the same. You are able to password protect stock, App Store and jailbroke apps that are on your device. A few of the new features I noticed is a Locked Apps option which allows you to quickly view all the apps that are locked, instead of having to scroll through the list of them to find which ones are locked.

There are also quite a few new options in the Settings. You are able to both lock and unlock all applications with one button, change your password and safety word, lock your icons so that they cannot be moved, lock your icons so that they can not be deleted and the ability to turn on launch button.

I have been testing this application for a while now and I have not had any problems with it. This is actually a very useful app that I will be keeping around. You can get Lockdown via the BigBoss source.

Encrypto is an application that allows you to hide images that are in your Camera Roll. When you open Encrypto, you will need to choose a passkey. You will want to remember your passkey because the next time you open the app, you will have to enter it.

Once in the application, you have three options on the lower menu bar; the main page, the help page and the import page. On the main page you will see all the photos from your Camera Roll. It automatically pulls in all your photos however, it will not pull in any screenshots that are in your Camera Roll. I personally like that it only pulls in photos and not screenshots. Each photo has a image of a lock on it. If you tap on the lock, it will Encrypt the photo.

Once Encrypted, the lock icon with change to a locked lock, a Top Secret stamp will be overlaid on the photo and the photo will be “hidden” in your Camera Roll. By “hidden” I mean the photo is moved to the bottom of your Camera Roll and a “Top Secret” overlay is placed over the top of it so that you are not able to see the photo. The only way to view the image is using the Encrytpo application (hence the reason it for a passkey to get into it). To Decrypt a photo (unhide it) just tap on the locked lock icon. The image will then be unlock and will show up in the Camera Roll once again.

If you tap on any photo, within the Encrypto app, you are able to view the photos a little larger, scroll through the photos and encrypt/decrypt the photos (by taping on the icon in the middle of the lower menu bar).

You can also import photos that are not in your actual Camera Roll but are in your Photo Albums. To import an image, select the icon all the way to the right on the lower main menu bar. This will bring up all your Photo Albums. You can then go through and pick the images you would like to import. What is nice is that once you choose an image, it remembers it and adds it to a “queue” which allows you to pick as many photos as you would like from as many albums as you would like. Once you have chosen your photos just tap on the lower menu bar where it says how many photos you will be importing. It will then import those photos. You are now able to hide those images by Ecrypting them which hides them from showing up in your Camera Roll.

Now for the issues…and there are a few. When you import an image from a Photo Album, it adds the image to your Camera Roll which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but, when you encrypt it, it only encrypts it in your Camera Roll and not in the Photo Album. Which means people can still see the photo in it’s album. So, I’m not really sure what the point of the importing feature is. Also, I found that about 50% of the time when I encrypted/decrypted a photo when I was viewing it in the slideshow and I would go back to the main menu, no photos would show up. I would have to close and reopen the application to get the photos to show up again. I think it would also be nice to have an option in which you could view all the images you have Encrypted. That way you do not have to scroll through all your photos trying to find the ones that are encrypted.

Overall, the design of this application is nice, it is easy to use and if you are looking for a way to hide images in your Camera Roll…it does just that. I’ll let you decide if it is worth $1.99 to keep some of the images in your Camera Roll private.
