TwitLock is a Cydget that allows you to tweet from your lock screen. Once installed, you can activate it via the stock Settings application under the Cydget.

After you have activated the Cydget, you will need to go to your lock screen. The first time you view TwitLock on your lock screen you are prompted to sign into your twitter account. After you have successfully signed in you are able to post a tweet right from your lock screen.

Currently the app is pretty basic… it only supports tweeting however, the developer says he will continue to add features.

Like most Cydgets this one also has some lag while trying to sign in and while typing a tweet but, the actually tweet is sent very quickly and with basically no lag. You can get TwitLock via the BigBoss source.

WikiSearch is a Cydget that allows the ability to search Wikipedia right from your lock screen.

Once installed, you can go into the stock Settings application under Cydget and enable WikiSearch. You will then be able to search Wikipedia directly from your lock screen. To search, just tap on the search bar and type in your search term(s). It will display the mobile version of Wikipedia on your lock screen. You are able to scroll through the page, click on links, view images… etc. You are not able to zoom in on the page but other than that, it has most of the functionality you would normally have.

I did find this Cydget to be a little laggy (though, I find most Cydgets to be a little laggy). I also am not a big fan of the wallpaper for the Cydget… I feel it a bit classier if the background of Apps/Cydgets are neutral with no particular theme. You can get WikiSearch via the modmyi source.

Note: If you would like to change the background image for the WikiSearch Cydget, you can do so by sshing in and dragging a new image into the /System/Library/LockCydgets/WikiSearch.cydget folder. Just rename the image to LockBackground.jpg. Make sure you change it to .jpg!

Last week I wrote about Cydget, a “framework for managing lock screen plugins.” Over the week-end there were a few Cydgets (like Widgets for Cydget) released that are pretty decent.

The first is HTC Hero Cydget. This Cydget includes the current Time, Temperature and Weather Conditions. Once you have installed the Cydget, you will need to go into the stock Settings application under Cydget and activate it. I did find that this particular Cydget does not display immediately on the lock screen, there is a slight delay. (strike)Though, it does know your current time and weather info without having to edit a .plist which is nice. (/strike)

The second cydget is LockLight Cydget. This is basically a flashlight Cydget. It displays a completely white screen at full brightness. I don’t know about you guys but, I actually use my iPhone as a flashlight quite often! So, to have it available from the lock screen comes in handy for me.

Both the HTC Hero and the LockLight Cydgets are available via the modmyi source.

Remember, Cydgets can be used at the same time as the LockInfo mod and other lock screen mods as long as they are compatible with SBAwayViewPlugins.

Another Reminder, you toggle through all your activated Cydgets by pressing the Home Button while on your lock screen (Quick Dismiss still works with Cydget). You can reorder your Cydgets in the stock Settings application under Cydget.

NOTE: Do not activate only the LockLight Cydget!! You will not be able to “slide to unlock” your device. If you activate the LockLight Cydget be sure to have another one activated as well.

Ok, so apparently the app is not pulling in the specific weather info for your location. Below is a quick tutorial on how to update the info for it works correctly for your location. This does require ssh.

How to set-up the HTC Hero Cydget
1. SSH into your device

2. Locate the /System/Library/LockCydgets/HTCHero.cydget/Private folder.

3. Open the ConfigureMe.js file.
*You may need to save it to your computer before you are able to open it. This can be done by simply dragging the file onto your desktop.

4. This is what the ConfigureMe.js file will look like:

* If you are outside of the US, you will need to search for your city on Weather.com. After you have searched for your city, copy the code out of the link in the browser (examples… UKXX0085, BRXX0232, ASXX0112… etc) and put that code into the var locale.

6. Save the changes you have made to the ConfigureMe.js
* If you saved the file to your computer you will need to drag it back into the /System/Library/LockCydgets/HTCHero.cydget/Private folder on your device. Make sure you save the changes you made to the file before dragging in back onto your device.

7. Respring your device.

8. That’s it. It will now display the correct weather info.

9. If you would like the temperature on your lock screen to display in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit, you will need to change the var isCelsius to true instead of false (true = Celsius, false = Fahrenheit).

I don’t know about you guys but, I would love to have the perfect lock screen mod! I’m currently using LockInfo and like it. I can’t wait to check out Element… it looks like it is going to be pretty sweet.

Below is some info about the mod via the dev’s blog.

It seems the screens we shared of an alternative home screen for the iPhone created some buzz. We had no intention of taking it any further than a blog post but we figured this was something worth seeing through.

We got in touch with Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik. He’s the guy behind Cydia, an application for jailbroken iPhones that allows you to browse and download apps outside of actual app store. He’s crazy smart, passionate and geeky — three things we love here at T+L. Jay is going to be instrumental in making this happen.

If you haven’t already figured it out, getting this on your phone will require you to jailbreak it. That may not be an appealing option for many, but for the 2 million plus out there who have already done it and for those that are comfortable with doing it, this can be a reality.

The app and the underlying technology to make it happen are still in development so what comes out the other side will differ from what we originally proposed. The biggest change will initially be that it will render only on the lock screen. We went down this road for a number of reasons, primarily because of its relative ease of implementation, though there’s nothing easy about it. Jay is creating a framework to write custom lock screens called Cydget. Our concept will act as the guinea pig.

No word on an actual release date yet due to a last minute crash bug, but from what we hear it’s not far off. We’ll make an official announcement once it’s available. Clock Plugin for LockInfo adds the current Date, Time and Calendar into the LockInfo lock screen mod.

Once installed, the option is added into the stock Settings application under the LockInfo option. In the LockInfo option you have the ability to turn on/off the Clock plugin itself and the Collapse by Default option. Once you have turned on the Clock plugin the current day of the week, month, date and time will display on your lock screen. If you tap on the Clock bar on the lock screen, it will display the current month calendar.

Yesterday, Saurik released Cydget in Cydia. Cydget is a “framework for managing lock screen plugins.”

Cydget isn’t necessarily an application in itself instead it is more of a framework that allows other people to create lock screen plugins that work within Cydget. Allowing you to manage lock screen plugins without the use of WinterBoard. The plugins are managed in the stock Settings application where they can be activated/deactivated and reordered.

Once on the lock screen, you can rotate through the activated lock screen plugins by tapping the Home Button.

The application does work with lock screen mods such as LockInfo (as long as they are compatible with SBAwayViewPlugins) as well as Quick Dismiss which also uses the Home Button on the lock screen.

I have a feeling that once there are more plugins available… this is going to be a very sweet “app.” Cydget is available through Saurik’s source (which is already on your device) so.. just search for Cydget in Cydia and it should be there.

Cydget provides a comprehensive replacement for WinterBoard Lock Widgets, allow developers and web designers to take control of the lock screen using either native code or HTML with JavaScript and Cycript, allowing flexible access to Objective-C.

Like WinterBoard Themes, Cydgets are configured using a reorderable list. Go to “Settings” then “Cydget” to activate, deactivate, and organize.

An example Cydget is included to demonstrate the technology: show a random picture from your camera roll.

LockInfo, a feature-packed lockscreen mod, was recently updated to version 1.0.114. The update adds quite a few new features…. some of which are pretty cool.

The update adds a pop-up blocker option in the settings that allows you to block pop-ups on the lockscreen. Another cool change is that the mod will now display the full text messages. In the previous version it would only display the first line of the message and then give you a nice ….

LockInfo, by David Ashman, is a seriously sweet mod that allows you to add information to your lockscreen such as; weather information, upcoming calendar events, missed calls, missed text messages and new emails.

Once installed, you can find LockInfo in your stock Settings application. The application is extrememly customizable and has some pretty cool features.

In the settings you are able to turn on/off a Lockscreen and Homescreen option. The Lockscreen option adds the mod to your lockscreen. The Homescreen option adds the mod as a page on your SpringBoard between your Spotlight Search page and the first page of your applications. You can have either have just the Lockscreen option, just the Homescreen option or both options turned on. Very cool.

A few other cool option include the ability to adjust the transparency of the mod, the ability to choose how you would like the Media Controls to display within the mod, the ability to collapse the cells (which allows you to tap on each option and collapse them giving you the ability view more information) and the ability to reorder the plugins.

Each of the plugins; Calendar, Mail, Phone, SMS and WeatherIcon are able to be customized as well as be disabled/enabled.

The mod displays very nicely on both the lockscreen and the homescreen. It is well designed and the effect on the “collapsing” feature is smooth. Overall, a sweet mod worth definitely checking out.

The only issue I have with the mod is that it is displaying yesterday’s events (Sunday… today is Monday) in the Calendar. I’m not really sure why but, it does. Not a huge issue but hopefully one that will be fixed in the next update. Ok, user error. The Calendar displays correctly!

Speaking of the next update, Ashman plans on adding more features to the mod including; Twitter, Facebook, Todo, Things, Push Notifications, MMS… etc. I look forward to seeing some updates!

Today MediaPhone announced ‘SmartScreen’ an application for the iPhone and iPod touch that will allow informational widgets to be placed and used on the lock screen.

Widgets are similar to those offered by Apple’s ‘dashboard’ and they follow familiar look and feel.

The widgets can be rearranged on the lock screen by using a ‘tap and hold to move’ action that is often used by to iPhone users (when moving icons around the home screen).

The application will work on all models of iPhone and iPod touch that run OS 3.x, unfortunately due to the nature of the product it will not be available for purchase in the Apple AppStore but will be sold to customers of jailbroken phones via alternate means.

A SmartScreen SDK will be available to everyone in November 2009 but widget developers are being selected to participate in a Beta programme, if you feel you could participate and would like to produce widgets, please email dev@media-phone.ch and we will consider you early access to the programme.

Lockscreen Dim Delay is an application that allows you to choose the amount of time before your lock screen turns off. Once Lockscreen Dim Delay is installed, it is added into your stock Settings application. Here you can choose a dim delay anywhere from 1 second to 60 seconds. If you set the dim delay for 1 second, your iPhone or iPod touch’s lockscreen will only stay on for one second before turning off. If you set the dim delay for 60 seconds, your iPhone or iPod touch’s lockscreen will only stay on for sixty seconds before turning off… etc.

When I tested this app, it worked great. So, if you would like the ability to control your lockscreen’s dim delay, you might want to check out this app. You can get Lockscreen Dim Delay via the modmyi source.
