I was looking for a movie tonight on IMDb.com (Internet Movie Database) and noticed an ad for an app for the iPhone. I had tried some other apps before so I wasn’t thinking it was going to be a new app. It is new, and it’s from IMDb themselves. What’s great is one, it’s free, and two, it’s a really nice app. Here’s some of the features:

-Over 1.5 million movie and TV titles
-Over 3.2 million celebrities
-US Movie showtimes
-Trailers
-Photos
-US TV listings
-Top ranked movies (MOVIEmeter)
-Top ranked celebrities (STARmeter)
-Celebrity birthdays
-US Box Office results
-Movies coming soon
-Top 250 rated films of all time

This application is not a new one however, it is not one that we have done a review of in the past. i.TV recently got a very nice update so I decided to check it out. I was rather impressed with the application and thought I would pass it along.

When you open i.TV, you will see a lower menu bar with the options; TV, Theaters, My Media, Search and More. The TV tab is basically a TV guide like grid showing TV listings. Tapping on a listing will take you to more details about the show which includes a bunch of things like a picture gallery, show credits, reviews, and other upcoming showings. You can also tap watch at the top which allows you to set a reminder to watch the show or search Netflix and then you can add it to your Netflix Queue. There is also a thumbs up or thumbs down button in the top right corner which manages content in your “My Media” tab at the bottom.

The theaters tab is all about movies currently playing in the theaters. You can sort them by movie title or theater. There is also a locate button to find the closest theaters. You can also see the same more details page and add them to your Netflix queue.

“My Media” is a list of all your favorite shows, movies, actors & theaters you’ve favorited with the thumbs up button. Then you can see other listings of shows, other movies of actors and all sorts of related info. This is also how you get to your Netflix queue.

Search allows you to search for movies and TV shows that are playing today, upcoming or available on Netflix. There’s also a detailed settings tab to customize the application. The major downfall of this application is the amount of crashes I had during testing. I probably tested it for a good hour and it crashed almost 10 times. I even restarted the iPhone and it continued to crash randomly when the app is running. There is a future update coming to allow live streaming of videos so hopefully with that there will be major bug fixes.

Note: We have spoke to the developer of i.TV and they are working on a fix for the crashing issues. So, keep your eye out for an update!

OneTap Movies is an application that allows you to look up theaters in your area, view the movies that are available in those theaters, watch a movie trailers, get a descriptions of movies and a lot more. OneTap Movies is the upgraded version of the free app, Showtimes. When you open OneTap Movies you will get a pop-up asking if OneTapp can use your current locations. Once the application has finished finding your current location, you will get a list of theaters that are near you…starting with the theater closest to you. You are able to see the Name of the theater, it’s address, how far it is from your current location and the ability to map the theater (this will map directions to the theater from your current location using Google Maps). When you select a theater, it will drop down a list of all the movies that are playing in that theater…just tap the theater again to shrink the list.

In the list of movies, you are able to see the title of the movie, it’s rating out of five stars, what the movie is rated, the length of the movie, the times it is showing in that theater and a quick link to play the trailer (the play icon on the image). If you select a movie you will get even more information about the movie including; the movie title, a short description of the movie, what the movie is rated, the option to play a trailer, the date it was released, the length of the movie, the genre, the cast of the movie and a longer description of the movie. If you select the play button to watch the trailer, it will open the movie in a video player screen. To get back to the application you can select the Done option in the upper left corner of the screen while the movie is playing.

Back on the list of theaters, you can also change the day in which you are searching for movie times. The application defaults to Today but, you can change it using the arrows next to Today on the upper menu bar. You are able to search out as far as a week from today. If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the theaters list there is an i icon. When selected you are given basic information about the application and the option to view the application’s website (which basically is the same information that is in the application).

There is also a lower menu bar with the options; Theaters, Popular, Rating, Newest and Location. OneTap Movies defaults to the Theaters search however, you can change the search to be based on the movie’s popularity, the movie’s rating (out of five stars) and based on when the movie was released. You get all the same information about the movie, just a different search format. The Location option allows you to change the location you would like the search based on. You are given the ability to enter a zip code, set a location as the default location and change the default location.

Personally, this is my choice of application for searching theaters and movies. It has a great user interface, it gives me all the information I want in one place and it is only $1.99. However, there are other great alternatives that are Free (Showtimes, BoxOffice and Movies.app).

Movies.app is a comprehensive movie searching application giving you Theaters in your area, movies that are in those theaters, trailers of movies, maps to the theaters, Box Office info about movies and even movies that are Opening Soon. When you open the application, you will come to the main lookup screen. Here you can enter a Zip code (there is not a locate me features yet but the developer says it will be in the next update), choose if you would like to lookup movies for today, tomorrow or the next day and whether you want to view results based on movies or theater. To get rid of the keyboard after you have entered your zip code, swipe your finger upward on the screen.

If you decide to search by Movie, you will get a list of all the available movies playing in your area. When you select a movie it will then display a list of theaters that are playing that movie. Once you have selected a theater, you will get a ton of movie such as; the name of the movie, it’s length, the genre it is in, a star rating (out of five stars), what the movie is rated, the ability to watch a trailer of the movie and the ability to view the movie in the IMDb website. You will also get information about the theater including; the theater name, the times the movie is showing in that theater, the ability to buy tickets using movietickets.com and the ability to see the theater in Google maps. If you choose to watch the movie trailer, it is will open the trailer in a video player screen. If you would like to get back to the application just select the Done button in the upper left corner of the video when it is playing. Back on the Lookup page, if you search by theater, you will get all the same information it just starts with a list of theaters near you and then the movies in those theaters (instead of searching for movies and then the theaters that movie is in).

The BoxOffice option on the lowers menu bar will give you Box Office information about each movie including a description of the movie and how much money the movie has made so far in the box office. The movies are in order based on how much they have made, starting with the movie that has made the most money in the Box Office.

The Opening Soon option will bring up a list of movies that not not yet in theater. You can sort the list by Wide release (they will be release is a lot of theaters), Limited release (they will only be released in select theaters) or Both Wide and Limited release. In the list you will get the movies title, a description of the movie and when it will be released.

The About option will give you more some basic info about the app. Overall, this a pretty decent application especially for being free. I love that you can watch trailers of the movie…that is huge. The only thing I don’t like is that I have to go into Box Office option to get a description of the movie. I would rather see the description of the movie when I search for it, that way I can decide whether or not I want to watch the trailer. But, other than that…it is a great application with a ton of great features.

BoxOffice is an application that allows you to search for theaters and movies available in those theaters based on location. When you open the application you will get a blank screen and a lower menu bar with the options; Movies, Theaters and Setting. The first place you will want to go is into the Settings. Here you can either enter a zip code or select the locate icon in the upper left corner and the app will find your current location. You can then choose the radius in which you would like the application to search. The radius options start at 5 miles and go in increments of five up to a 50 mile radius. You can also learn more about the application by selecting the About option. Once you have entered everything into the Settings, you can then choose either the Movies or Theaters option.

If you select the Movies options, you will get a list of current movie that are playing in the theaters near you. You can sort the movies by Title or Rating. When you select a movie you will get the movie’s page which gives a short description of the movie and a list of all the theaters, with-in the radius you chose, that are showing the movie. Below each theater title it will display the times in which that movie is showing in that theater.

If you select the Theater option on the lower menu bar, you will get a list of all the theaters with-in the radius you chose. You can sort the list by name or distance. If you select one of the theaters on the list you are given the address of the theater (which can then be selected and will open in Google Maps), a phone number for the theater (which can also be selected which will call the number, a list of the movies that are playing in that theater and the times each of the movies are showing.

I personally like to have all my information in one spot. Which means I would prefer to see the address of the theater even when I am in the Movies search. Other wise, once I find a movie I want to see and figure out which theater is showing it…I have to go into the Theaters option in order to get the map and phone number for that theater. But, that is just personal preference. I do like that you are given a description and rating of the movie as well as the theaters it is available in.

Tomatoes is a simple application that allows you to search for movies… new or old. When you open the application, you will get the main search screen. Once you have enter the title of a the movie you would like to search for, you can select search in the lower right corner of the keyboard. It will then bring up the most relevant movie based on your search. The search results screen will display the title of the video, the year it was released, the rating, the length of the movie, the percentage based on user ratings and general information about the movie (who it was starring and a short description). To go to the next search result, just swipe to the left. If you would like even more information about the video you can tap on the movies title and it will open a web browser to Rotten Tomatoes web page for that movie.

The issue I have with this application is that the description of the movie sometimes gets cut off and the only way to view the entire description is open the movie’s web page on Rotten Tomatoes. The only problem with this is if I wanted to view the website, I would go to the website…that is why it is a native application and not a Web App. Overall, it seems to have a pretty decent database of movies, though there were a few I searched for that it did not find (ex..Big). But, if you are trying to remember what a certain movie is about or when it was released or who was starring in it…this just might be the app for you.
