In order for this application to work, both devices (iPhone or iPod touch) need to have the app installed and open.

Once you have the Bluetooth Image open, it will search for other devices in range. When it finds them, it will add it to a list where you can choose which one you would like to connect to. After that person has accepted… it will connect to their device. You can then go into your Photo Library and choose an image to send to them over Bluetooth.

Here is the skinny on the app. I never actually got it to work. Twice the connect failed before it finished sending the image, once it finished sending the image (though it said it sent it to Chris’s device and I really sent it to Doug’s… freaked me out a little) but the image didn’t display and once it crashed. Also, the images transfer extremely slowly!

Personally, I’m not sure I would download the app yet… it seems pretty buggy. If it gets an update, it might be worth a download. You can get Bluetooth Image via the BigBoss source.

I’m not a huge business card user. In fact, I carry a few of them mostly so I can throw them into a fishbowl in order to win a free lunch at a restaurant. However, I can imagine how useful it would be to have an application that would take business cards and effortlessly import their information into your contacts list. CardSnap attempts to address this by using a proprietary method similar to OCR but not really (or so says the app’s description).

Upon opening (and waiting for) CardSnap, you are given the option to use the camera to snap a picture of the business card. You can also load photos from your camera roll or from your photo library. However, since the main selling point is to use this application in real time, I wanted to focus on the camera option. After taking a picture, you can move and scale your picture before deciding to upload to the servers at CardSnap. Once you’re satisfied with your business card’s readability (this may take some time with the iPhone’s pitiful camera), you submit the card, and wait for a response. Other options in the application include a menu to review your submitted cards, an info screen that offers a user’s guide, and a settings screen that allows you to use groups with your contacts.

I submitted a few business cards several times and was impressed on occasion with the response from CardSnap. We all know that the camera on the iPhone is not very good, and the picture quality is marginal at best. To the application’s defense, the user guide strongly recommends the use of Griffin’s Clarifi case. I was unable to test with this, so I had to rely on the standard camera app as I imagine most iPhone users would as well. With my work business card, the app said that there were some illegible fields, and I should probably review these before accepting it as a contact. Indeed, there was an error in my name, and a wrong digit in my work phone number. Other than that, though, I was impressed with how many of the details were picked up by the service and assigned to the correct field. On my wife’s business card, CardSnap got everything right, though interestingly, it did choose to skip a few items like a web address and part of her title.

Thankfully, there have been a few updates since CardSnap’s original release. When I first downloaded this app, stability was a major issue as the initial load time was long, and I had to reopen the application quite regularly. If you were to use this application on a regular basis, you might want to invest in the Clarifi case, though there’s no guarantee that the application will still get all of the fields correct. One positive test included a submission that I made using my Nikon D60 camera. CardSnap read this photo within hours and it did a perfect job of interpreting all of the fields correctly. Unfortunately, this is not a practical solution, and you might as well spend the time inputting your business cards by hand.

In the end, I would think the goal for CardSnap is to be an application that can scan business cards efficiently, effortlessly, and accurately. So far, the application succeeds in only some of these areas. It has a very simple interface, so it is possible to scan multiple business cards in a short amount of time. The program integrates well with your built-in contacts list, and it has shown high levels of accuracy when photo quality is high. I would love to see push notifications for business cards that have been reviewed as I had to open the application to check on the status. I understand the high price tag ($9.99) since CardSnap is more of an advanced application that recognizes fields rather than just translating images to text. However, for this price, one needs to demand better recognition for blurry images or wait until the camera on the iPhone improves. Perhaps, the 3GS will have better results. If you would like to try CardSnap before plunking down $10, there is a lite version, but it will still cost you $0.99. The limitation is that the app will only read 6 fields as opposed to 17. My recommendation is that CardSnap will be worth it if you receive and need to store a lot of business cards on a regular basis and you are willing to invest in either the iPhone 3GS and/or the Griffin Clarifi case.

Note: This application is currently only compatible with English keyboards.

In all there are about 11 different filters (12 if you count the “NONE” filter as an option). These filters include; Quantize, Airbrush, Edges, Inverse, Saturate, Cartoon, Trace, Grayscale, Sepia, Night Vision, and Predator. One nice thing about this app is that once you save an image you can change the filter and save another version of the same image.

A couple things I don’t like about the app is that when you want to edit the photo on either the very top or the very bottom you have to do it with the slider and tool bar in the way and I’ve had it crash a few times too but that maybe a result of something else on my iPhone. It would also be sweet if you could rotate the box to better fit the photo and draw on the photo much like a brush in Photoshop. Other than that though its a pretty sweet app!

In the case of Readdle’s Take a Note, I liked it better when it was called Evernote.

Overview
Almost eerily identical to Evernote, the opening user menu of Take a Note gives you options to add a text note, an audio note, a drawing note, and a photo note. All notes that are created on the iPhone are editable, sortable, and searchable. WiFi access gives you the option to transfer notes to and from your computer or other wireless enabled sources. Notes can be emailed directly from the program and the app uses your contacts list to add recipients.

Now, you will notice that there is a QuickShot and an Enhanced option at the bottom of the screen. The QuickShot feature, when selected, will take four consecutive photos (it takes less than 2 seconds to take all four photos). It will then automatically save the best of the four images to your iPhone’s Camera Roll. The Enhanced option, when selected, will take six consecutive photos (this takes 2.5 seconds). It then saves those six photos in the Photo Queue within the application. You can get to the Photo Queue by using the File icon on the bottom of the screen (it’s the icon all the way to the right). Here you will find a list of all the photos you have taken using the Enhanced feature of the application.

When you select one of the photos options from the list, you will be able to view all six images that were taken. Each images can be zoomed or rotate using two fingers…it is a multitouch interface. To get to the next image, tap next to the dots at the bottom of the screen. At the bottom of the screen, you will also notice another option…it looks like the email icon. This option allows you to save any of the six images to your Camera Roll or allows you to jump to the sharpest of the six images.

Ok, now how to use the actual Enhanced feature. At the top of the page you will notice an Align option. When selected, this options apparently stacks all of the images on top of one another. Once the images are aligned, you are then able to choose Enhanced. This than sharpens the image and creates a 4 megapixel photo (according to the developers). The enhanced photo is added as a seventh image on the page. One cool feature is that you can switch back and forth between the Original photo and the Enhanced photo so that you are able to see the difference between the two. You can then save the enhanced image to your camera roll. Also, it will align and enhanced only what in one the screen. So, if you zoom in on something in the photo…it will align and enhance only that part of the photo.

When I tested this application, I had one photo in which the enhanced feature worked really well however, with the other photos, I honestly didn’t see a huge improvement in the quality of the photo once it was enhanced. I also had some issues with the app crashing though, I was taking screenshots and testing the app so…it could have been my fault. You will have to let me know in the comments what you think of this app and whether or not you are going to purchase it.

This will bring you to the main list of setting options. Next, you will want to add people to your Favorites list by selecting the Favorites List option. This will bring you to a list of your favorites…to add a favorite to the list, select the + icon in the upper right corner. You will then get a list of all your contacts. You can select a contact and then select which number you would like to use for that contact. Once you have done this, the contact will be added to your Favorites List. You can also delete contacts and rearrange your contacts from here as well. Note: To rearrange contacts, tap and hold the three little bard to the right of the contact and drag it where you would like it.

To get back to the main Settings menu, select Settings in the upper left corner. Now for the fun part! This app allows for quite a bit of customization. You are able to pick what size you would like the photos to be…ranging from 1 per row (large pictures) to 6 per row which are small picture. You are able to choose from a variety of picture frame styles…these are what will outline all of your photos. You are able to choose a background color for your Favorites Page…there is quite a variety of colors to choose from! You can also customize the phone badges. These are the little icons that will display on each photo that indicate whether you are dialing the mobile, home, work or other number. You can also choose to turn these off. Finally, you are able to customize the loading animation. This is the animation you get when you open the application and it loads all your favorites.

In the Advanced Settings, you have the option to adjust the tap speed. It allows you to choose Fast, Moderate or Slow. The Share PictureDialer option will open a new email with info about PictureDialer. Once you have selected all your settings, you can tap on the Favorites option on the lower menu bar.

Here you will see all the people you have added as favorites, as well as all your customizations. To call a person, just tap on their photo. A few cool features are that you can double tap on a contact’s photo to get a list of all the phone numbers for that contact you can also triple tap on a contact’s photo to get SMS and Email information for that contact.

PictureDialer pulls the photos from your current Contact information. If you do not have a photo assigned for a contact, you will get a stock photo which basically just looks like a dialer. If you would like to add a photo to a contact, you will need to add one via the stock Phone application. To do so; just go into your stock Phone application, find the contact you are looking for, select the contact, select Edit in the upper right corner, tap on the Add Photo option in the upper left corner and then either take a photo or choose a photo that is already on your iPhone. PictureDialer will then automatically use that photo. If you have more questions, they have a great Help and FAQ section in the Settings option in the app.

Overall, this application works great for me. I noticed in iTunes that some people said that they had issues with load time…I personally did not have any issue with the loading time though, I do not have a ton of favorites added to the application. Also, I like dialing by picture. If I have to go into my Phone app and then my favorites anyway, it is basically the same to go into the PictureDialer app and then your favorites…plus, it is just more fun! And, I like all the customization ability.

It seems the PhoneZap, a photo sharing/networking application, has made it’s way into Cydia for firmware 2.0. PhoneZap is also going to be available via Installer and the AppStore in the coming days. It application itself functions much the same as the previous version however, it does not have the Ringtones option (though they say this will be added in the next week or so). The Post and Preferences options are basically the same as in the previous version. The Messages option has changed a little and is now divided into Messages and Comments…which makes it a lot neater. I also noticed that you can now view images based on Countries, which was not an option the last time I did a reivew of this application. Other than that, the app is very similar to the 1.1.4 and below version of the application. The only issue I am having with the application is that is seems to be crashing quite a bit! On the main menu page, the options have been reordered. The Picture option if now first followed by the Title, Message, Tags and GeoLoc. I think this makes a lot more sense. They have also added a BeenThere! option in the upper left corner. If selected, it will bring you directly to the BeenThere website. A very smart implimentation! BeenThere is avialable through the Trivalware source.
