I’m really hoping that the new firmware is released in just a few days at the WWDC event. Until then, I’m going to jailbreak my iPhone again. I’m currently on the newest firmware, 3.0 Beta 5. QuickPWN is able to jailbreak it so, here we go:

Download QuickPWN

You can get QuickPWN here on quickpwn.com. (mirror)

Sync

I always sync my iPhone before jailbreaking. That way, in case there is a problem, I can always go back to the way my iPhone was before.

Run QuickPWN

Now that everything is ready, it’s time to run QuickPWN. QuickPWN only works on PCs. There is no Mac version at this time. Also, make sure to use only your USB cord. I’ve had problems jailbreaking when using a dock.

Find Firmware

After connecting your iPhone, you will need to browse for the firmware. You are looking for this file: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A312g_Restore.ipsw

Select Operation Settings

Here you can select if you want to install <strike>Icy</strike> Cydia (menu says Icy, but after you’re done, you’ll have Cydia) change your boot logo, and activate your iPhone. You definitely want Cydia. It lets you install apps, hacks and mods on your iPhone. You can change the boot logo if you’d like, but I think all it does is change the Apple logo to a pineapple logo. I’d rather not, so I unchecked this. I don’t think you can pick your own boot logo with this version like in others. Last, activation. If you are an A&T customer, you do not want to activate though QuickPWN. iTunes has already done this. If you aren’t, then choose activate. This let’s you use the iPhone without service like an iPod Touch.

Recovery Mode

The iPhone now needs to be put into recovery mode to run the jailbreak. Follow the onscreen instructions. You will have to hold down the home button, then also the lock/power button, then let go of just the lock/power button. See the onscreen instructions for exact info.

Wait…

Now you just wait why the app does it’s work. Soon you will have a jailbroken iPhone with <strike>Icy</strike> Cydia

Cydia, not Icy

After the jailbreak, you’ll notice we now have Cydia and a web link to QuickPWN’s blog. Former jailbreaks for 3.0 included Icy, but this one has Cydia. Be careful, some apps don’t work with 3.0 yet. We’ll let you know what does and doesn’t…

<strike>Note: My Cydia doesn’t have an icon, it’s just blank. How about yours?</strike> (after a respring, it’s just fine)

Compatibility List

It only works for PCs right now because it uses quickpwn. It also doesn’t install Cydia, but RipDev’s Icy. I’m gonna test it out and let you know how it goes. If anyone else has tried it, let us know. Here’s a quote from quickpwn.com:

You can only jailbreak on the iPhone 3.0 Beta 2, iPhone 3G 3.0 beta 2, and iPod Touch 1st Gen beta 3.0. It’s 3.2 MB only because it install’s RiPDev’s Icy program. Once you’ve jailbroken you need to open Icy, refresh all the sources and install OpenSSH to jailbreak.

google_ad_height = 60;
//-->

You can download quickpwn here: http://quickpwn2-2-1.googlecode.com/files/QuickPWN-30-beta2.zip

You can also read the Dev Teams comments about the jailbreak here: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ Here are the main reasons they haven’t released a jailbreak:

1. We don’t want to have to release a new version of PwnageTool and QuickPwn for every beta release. Last time around during the 2.0 beta period, there were nine (9!) Apple releases, spaced within a few weeks of each other.
2. There are unresolved problems that we’re still working on. It’s currently impossible to get the 3.0 firmware to talk to baseband 02.28 where yellowsn0w lives, for instance.
3. We don’t want to have to support everyone who wants to back down from the betas…because the betas are, well, buggy.
4. It’s silly to play cat&mouse with Apple during a beta period, when relatively few people are willing to actually use the beta software in their everyday lives. There are ways Apple can tighten the screws, and we’d rather not burn methods just for a beta release.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE UNOFFICIAL QUICKPWN RELEASES IS THAT IF YOU USE THEM, YOU WILL KILL YELLOWSN0W, POSSIBLY FOREVER.

The Dev Team has released PwnageTool and QuickPwn (for both the Mac and PC) 2.2.5. Below gives you the general idea about the jailbreak for firmware 2.2.1 but, you will want to check out the Dev Team’s website to see all the info (there is a lot more) and to get the links to the jailbreaks.

If your iPhone is unlocked…or you would like it to be unlocked it the future…do not upgrade to firmware 2.2.1.

“This is the low down on our tools for use with the 2.2.1 firmare from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything.

 1. GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
2. Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update – you will need to create a custom ipsw that will allow you to update safely without affecting the baseband.
3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
6. These apps are suitable for the recent 2.2.1 release.
7. The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer – this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband) – again – remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly – you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which doesn’t upgrade the baseband.
8. Users of OS X 10.5.6 will be unable to use DFU mode correctly, please see the note towards the end of this post to easily fix this issue.”

I recently upgraded to firmware 2.2 and finally had time to jailbreak it. Jailbreaking allows you to add programs and change settings that Apple doesn’t allow. It also lets you change your icons, sounds and dock. The first thing you need to do is download QuickPwn for firmware 2.2 (also works on firmware 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1). You should also sync your iPhone before you jailbreak so everything gets backed up.

Connect your iPhone to your computer via a USB cable. Then click the blue arrow in the bottom right corner to continue.

QuickPwn will search your computer for the 2.2 firmware.

Select your choice for Cydia or Installer, or both. There’s also the option for changing your boot logo. If you change your boot logo it will change it to the pinapple with a bite out of it. There’s no choices for boot logos. If you want to change the boot logo to something custom you must use PwnageTool to create a custom firmware.

The program will warn you to double check that the iPhone is connected. Click the blue arrow.

NOTE: The first time I ran the jailbreak I used my dock and the jailbreak didn’t work. It just made my iPhone reboot over and over. I restored and tried with just the USB cable and it worked fine.

WinPwn 2.5 is finally here! This is a very nice jailbreak application. I just upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.0.2 and jailbroke my iPhone 3G using the QuickPwn part of WinPwn 2.5. You can jailbreak the iPod Touch and both the 1st Gen iPhone and the iPhone 3G all on firmwares 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. You can also unlock the 1st Gen iPhone but not the iPhone 3G.

Again, I used the QuickPwn part of WinPwn because I can’t unlock my iPhone 3G and didn’t want to restore. To switch WinPwn 2.5 into QuickPwn Mode just click the Custom icon at the top and it will switch to QuickPwn mode. The steps are really easy and the big difference with this version is WinPwn is it’s design and usability. If you’ve been afraid to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch because it looks too hard, it’s now become even easier.

From what I could tell, I did not have the option to install the Installer app in QuickPwn mode. I restarted the app and looked through everything and still didn’t see it. However, you can add Installer by making a custom firmware in the Custom mode.

This will jailbreak your iPhone but will not unlock the 3G yet. It will add Cydia and Installer without the need to restore your firmware. The Dev Team says the mac version is coming soon.

It seems there is a new GUI version of QuickPwn available. QuickPwn is still in beta but, at least it has a nice interface now! Below is what the Dev Team has to say. Let us know in the comments if you have used QuickPwn and what you think. Also, their website still advises to stay on firmware 2.0.1 though, we have heard of people jailbreaking 2.0.2 using QuickPwn.

“poorlad” has stepped up and created a GUI version of QuickPwn based on our Windows release earlier, this is a stopgap solution that he created in a little over 5 hours, great stuff poorlad!

It is available for download here but beware this is still beta software, it is fairly self explanatory and easy to use. You’ll still see a command-line window popping up when the actual QuickPwn process takes place, but the device and ipsw selection is handled by the GUI.

A final cross platform GUI for QuickPwn is also being developed, but this version should help some of you guys and gals right now.

This version fixes some issues that were reported with the iPod touch.

We’ve also heard reports of 2.0.2 version of the iPhone software being released, we’ll be looking at this tomorrow, but for the moment we’d recommend you stay at 2.0.1.
