Yesterday, CategoriesSB was released in Cydia. CategoriesSB is an application that integrates Categories into the SpringBoard. This is done by loading the folders you create using Categories directly on the SpringBoard instead of loading them as a separate app. What this basically does is allows the folders that you create with Categories to load much faster. This also allows for things like badge support since the folder is directly on the SpringBoard.

You will still need to use the actual Categories application to create, edit, delete and rearrange the applications in the folders you create. You can get CategoriesSB via the BigBoss source.

BigBoss added some info about CategoriesSB on his website:

Developer
Ashikase has written a Springboard add-on for Categories app. What this does is takes categories an moves the folders directly into springboard. The result is that everything loads very quickly, instantly more like. Also, the icons are rounded and badges are supported. Another interesting feature he has added is that if you make a category folder called “Recent” and leave it empty, it will track your last loaded applications. Pretty neat!

This extension to categories was not written by me. Ashikase has written other apps such as backgrounder. He is selling it for 99c in cydia store. If you are interested check it out. If you don’t want to fork out 99 cents, then you can still use categories as it is.

And yes, Categories is still in development and will remain free, but I have been distracted with other stuff recently. But there are plans to integrate some native support for this new extension in the GUI of categories app as well as a long list of things I’ve had planned since 1.1.x time frame…

Check out the full article HERE.

The update includes quite a few bug fixes but does add some new features. Some noteworthy new features include; you can now choose wallpaper from the stock Wallpaper category, the Single Image option is now available, you have the options to turn off the random feature and there is now a Delete All option in the wallpaper section. The full change log for version 0.95 is below. The application is still in the BigBossBetaRepo and has not been released in the main BigBoss repo but, hopefully we are getting close. It really is a very cool application. Remember, you can stay up-to-date on the apps progress HERE.

0.95 Change Log:
    • Used better randomization algorithm. The images seemed to be repeating too often.
    • When locked, image was switching one more time. Fixed this so that the image did not switch on lock.
    • Added sequential ordering option to show images in order rather than randomize.
    • Added Wallpapers folder to images to select folders.
    • Added some explanation on dock replacement screen when winterboard is installed that winterboard will be used to replace the dock.
    • Added single image(s) selection. You can select images by browsing the folders on the flash disk. If both images and folders are selected, all will be rotated. If you have folders selected, you must delete them if you wish to show only images. You can also preview the images.
    • Made the prefs app switch paper when closed if a preference reload is required so the user “feels” like something is happening.
    • Took some extra steps to make sure no timer is running if only 1 image is selected.
    • Added a “delete all” button for image mode. (Note this button is intentionally difficult to press).

David Pogue, the tech columnist for the New York Times, recent tweeted that you can install more than 180 apps on your iPhone and then access them via Spotlight search:

You can install UNLIMITED APPS! Only 180 show up as icons—but Spotlight can find and open all of them! (And yes, we tried. Stopped at 250!)

The only problem I see to this is that if you install your 181th app, you won’t be able to move it to a page to organize your apps since you can’t see it on any of your home screens. You’d also have to uninstall the app via iTunes on your computer because you can’t see it to tap and hold on it if you wanted to uninstall.

Since my iPhone is jailbroken, I am using categories to organize my apps that aren’t on my first couple of pages. Unfortunately none of this works on Web Apps. You can’t Spotlight search for them, you can’t put them in categories, and you can’t even put then in a Stack.

The update is said to change the app so that the user can use their own wallpaper and includes some bug fixes. I gave the update a shot and I’m still not having much luck. The wallpaper of the mod has been changed to a blank wallpaper but, I still cannot use it with another theme’s wallpaper (by moving the theme above the SpringBoard Clock mod in WinterBoard) or use my own wallpaper with the mod (by moving User Wallpaper above the SpringBaord Clock mod in WinterBoard). Let me know in the comments if it is working for you. You can get SpringBoard Clock via the modmyi source. What the mod does is add the Date and Time to the bottom of the SpringBoard where your page dots normally are. It looks the best if used with smaller icons. If you are using the stock size icons, you can turn on the Transparent Dock mod, and that will allow the SpringBoard Clock to fit a little better. The application package also includes an html file if you would like to ssh in and do some of your own customizations to the mod…it is located in the Library/Themes/Springboard Clock – English.theme folder.

The mod comes with a wallpaper that I can’t seem to change using WinterBoard which means you would have to ssh in a different wallpaper if you would like it changed. You can get this mod via the modmyi source.

I don’t know if you guys have noticed or not but, Apple seems to have rearranged the icons on the iPhone. The 3.0 firmware adds a Voice Memos application. Instead of adding the Voice Memos app at the end, they add it to the third row of apps and then rearrange the entire third row of apps. Previously it went Clock, Calculator, Notes and Settings now, they have it as Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator. Why in the world would they do that?? Why not just add the Voice Memos application to the end and leave the rest of the apps alone? Especially since they add the new Compass application to the end of the apps on the iPhone 3GS….they didn’t add it amongst the already exciting apps. Totally weird.

Personally, I’m totally going to have to rearrange them so that they are “normal.” I’m waaaay to used to it the way it is now…I would go to use the Calculator and open Notes instead.

Just an observation. If you think you have some logical reason as to why Apple would change the icons to the new order, let me know in the comments. Will you keep them in the new order?

Which means you can now have 180 applications at your fingertips where previously you could only have 150. I know some of you probably use Categories so you do not use all 9 pages anyway but, for those people who are not jailbroke…it might be a nice feature of the new firmware. Though, I have found that the more apps I install the slower my iPhone gets but, I might be able to blame that on the jailbroke apps.

Thanks to aly for pointing this out!

SixRows is a mod that allows you to have six rows of icons on your SpringBoard. Technically it is seven rows of icons if you include the dock. There is currently already a mod that allows you to have five rows of icons (six including the dock) called FiveIrows. There is also another mod allowing for five columns on your SpringBoard called FCSB. So, I guess SixRows just gives you one more option for modding your iPhone or iPod Touch exactly they way you would like it.

When you install SixRows, your device will respring and you will instantly have six (seven) rows on your SpringBoard. This mod can not be activated/deactivated via WinterBoard. Also, because the SixRows mod really squishes your icons together, it does not display the icon titles (they are overlapped by the next row of icons). So, unless the theme is designed specifically for the SixRows mod, you will probably want to turn your icon labels off via WinterBoard.

I was able to install and uninstall SixRows with no problem. It is most likely not a mod that I am going to use…unless I run across a theme designed specifically for it. Let me know in the comments what you think and whether this is a mod you are going to use or not.

You can get SixRows via the Touch-Mania source.

iTicker Widget is an “updating ticker of sports scores, news headlines, or any other RSS feed that you would like displayed right on your iPhone 3G’s springboard!” Note: I know the developer’s description of the application says “iPhone 3G’s springboard” however, I have tested iTicket Widget on a first gen iPhone and it worked as well.

Once you install iTicker Widget, you can activated/deactivate it via WinterBoard. When you activate it, it will add a text line under your forth row of icons (just above your dock) that will scroll through an RSS feed. You can customize the RSS feed to whatever you would like it to be however, in order to do so, you will need to be comfortable using SSH. If you are comfortable with SSH and would like to customize the application…below are instructions.

The instructions below are actually the developer’s instructions. Usually, I end up writing my own instructions but, the developer’s are perfect so I thought I would just use those!

Instructions:

Once in your iPhone you’ll want to navigate to the following folder: /Library/Themes

Here you will see a folder for iTicker. Open that folder and you will see a file called: Widget.html

Open up this file in notepad or any HTML editor you like such as Dreamweaver. Look for this line of code:

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5hrDg6Ir3hGzle_u6icw5g&_render=rss

Replace that URL with the URL of your RSS feed that you want to use. Here is a list of individual sports feeds you can use so only that sport displays.

MLB use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/mlb.php
NBA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/nba.php
NFL use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/nfl.php
NHL use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/mlb.php
NCAA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/ncaa.php
WNBA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/wnba.php

If you want to have multiple feeds show for example MLB and NFL you will need to combine them into one feed. To do that please follow this guide here.

I actually replaced the http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5hrDg6Ir3hGzle_u6icw5g&_render=rss code with AppleiPhoneSchool’s RSS url (which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/AppleiPhoneSchool) and it scrolled through all our top articles…it displayed the title of each article. It was pretty cool.

I also made one more change to the file and moved the text over so that is started a little close to the left side of my iPhone. If you would also like to adjust your text…see the instructions below.

1. Once in your iPhone you’ll want to navigate to the following folder: /Library/Themes

2, Here you will see a folder for iTicker. Open that folder and you will see a file called: Widget.html

3. Open up this file in notepad or any HTML editor you like such as Dreamweaver. Look for this line of code:

margin-left:59px;

4. Change the 59px to whatever suits your customizations. Note: The smaller the number, the closer the text will start to the left side of your iPhone. (Example…if you change 59 to 39, the text will start closer to the left side of your iPhone.)

For more information about the iTicker Widget…check out the developer’s site. You can get this app via the modmyi source.

CyDelete is an application that allows you to delete Cydia application right from your SpringBoard….just like you would an App Store application. To use the applicaiton, just tap and hold your icons until they start wiggling and then click on the X in the corner of any Cydia application. It will then look up the application and give you a pop-up asking if you would like to delete the app. If you select Delete, it will then say uninstalling and voilà…it uninstalls! Personally, I like this mod…it is so much faster than going into Cydia, finding the application, clicking on it, selecting modify, selecting remove, selecting confirm and then waiting for the app to uninstall! You actually used to be able to do this same thing using Kate (I miss Kate). Screenshots below.
