Apple’s New Icon Layout

iPhone 3GS Icon Layout I don’t know if you guys have noticed or not but, Apple seems to have rearranged the icons on the iPhone. The 3.0 firmware adds a Voice Memos application. Instead of adding the Voice Memos app at the end, they add it to the third row of apps and then rearrange the entire third row of apps. Previously it went Clock, Calculator, Notes and Settings now, they have it as Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator. Why in the world would they do that?? Why not just add the Voice Memos application to the end and leave the rest of the apps alone? Especially since they add the new Compass application to the end of the apps on the iPhone 3GS….they didn’t add it amongst the already exciting apps. Totally weird.

Personally, I’m totally going to have to rearrange them so that they are “normal.” I’m waaaay to used to it the way it is now…I would go to use the Calculator and open Notes instead. [Read more…]

11 Page SpringBoard on Firmware 3.0

11 Page SpringBoard One feature of the 3.0 firmware that is pretty cool is that you can now have 11 pages of applications on your SpringBoard instead of the previous 9 pages (screenshot below). Which means you can now have 180 applications at your fingertips where previously you could only have 150. I know some of you probably use Categories so you do not use all 9 pages anyway but, for those people who are not jailbroke…it might be a nice feature of the new firmware. Though, I have found that the more apps I install the slower my iPhone gets but, I might be able to blame that on the jailbroke apps.

Thanks to aly for pointing this out!

SixRows – Six Rows on Your SpringBoard (Seven Counting the Dock)

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

##ICON_NAME## SixRows is a mod that allows you to have six rows of icons on your SpringBoard. Technically it is seven rows of icons if you include the dock. There is currently already a mod that allows you to have five rows of icons (six including the dock) called FiveIrows. There is also another mod allowing for five columns on your SpringBoard called FCSB. So, I guess SixRows just gives you one more option for modding your iPhone or iPod Touch exactly they way you would like it.

When you install SixRows, your device will respring and you will instantly have six (seven) rows on your SpringBoard. This mod can not be activated/deactivated via WinterBoard. Also, because the SixRows mod really squishes your icons together, it does not display the icon titles (they are overlapped by the next row of icons). So, unless the theme is designed specifically for the SixRows mod, you will probably want to turn your icon labels off via WinterBoard. [Read more…]

iTicker Widget – Scrolling RSS Feed on Your SpringBoard

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

iTicker Widget iTicker Widget is an “updating ticker of sports scores, news headlines, or any other RSS feed that you would like displayed right on your iPhone 3G’s springboard!” Note: I know the developer’s description of the application says “iPhone 3G’s springboard” however, I have tested iTicket Widget on a first gen iPhone and it worked as well.

Once you install iTicker Widget, you can activated/deactivate it via WinterBoard. When you activate it, it will add a text line under your forth row of icons (just above your dock) that will scroll through an RSS feed. You can customize the RSS feed to whatever you would like it to be however, in order to do so, you will need to be comfortable using SSH. If you are comfortable with SSH and would like to customize the application…below are instructions.

The instructions below are actually the developer’s instructions. Usually, I end up writing my own instructions but, the developer’s are perfect so I thought I would just use those!

Instructions:

Once in your iPhone you’ll want to navigate to the following folder: /Library/Themes

Here you will see a folder for iTicker. Open that folder and you will see a file called: Widget.html

Open up this file in notepad or any HTML editor you like such as Dreamweaver. Look for this line of code:

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5hrDg6Ir3hGzle_u6icw5g&_render=rss

Replace that URL with the URL of your RSS feed that you want to use. Here is a list of individual sports feeds you can use so only that sport displays.

MLB use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/mlb.php
NBA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/nba.php
NFL use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/nfl.php
NHL use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/mlb.php
NCAA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/ncaa.php
WNBA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/wnba.php

If you want to have multiple feeds show for example MLB and NFL you will need to combine them into one feed. To do that please follow this guide here.

I actually replaced the http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5hrDg6Ir3hGzle_u6icw5g&_render=rss code with AppleiPhoneSchool’s RSS url (which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/AppleiPhoneSchool) and it scrolled through all our top articles…it displayed the title of each article. It was pretty cool.

I also made one more change to the file and moved the text over so that is started a little close to the left side of my iPhone. If you would also like to adjust your text…see the instructions below.

1. Once in your iPhone you’ll want to navigate to the following folder: /Library/Themes

2, Here you will see a folder for iTicker. Open that folder and you will see a file called: Widget.html

3. Open up this file in notepad or any HTML editor you like such as Dreamweaver. Look for this line of code:

margin-left:59px;

4. Change the 59px to whatever suits your customizations. Note: The smaller the number, the closer the text will start to the left side of your iPhone. (Example…if you change 59 to 39, the text will start closer to the left side of your iPhone.)

For more information about the iTicker Widget…check out the developer’s site. You can get this app via the modmyi source.

CyDelete – Delete Cydia Apps off SpringBoard

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

CyDelete CyDelete is an application that allows you to delete Cydia application right from your SpringBoard….just like you would an App Store application. To use the applicaiton, just tap and hold your icons until they start wiggling and then click on the X in the corner of any Cydia application. It will then look up the application and give you a pop-up asking if you would like to delete the app. If you select Delete, it will then say uninstalling and voilà…it uninstalls! Personally, I like this mod…it is so much faster than going into Cydia, finding the application, clicking on it, selecting modify, selecting remove, selecting confirm and then waiting for the app to uninstall! You actually used to be able to do this same thing using Kate (I miss Kate). Screenshots below.

SpinBoard Preview – Rotating SpringBoard Icons

SettingsHere’s a preview of a new hack coming to the iPhone. It allows your icons to rotate when you rotate your iPhone based on your accelerometer. The features are limited and it’s in the very beginning stages. We’ll keep you informed as soon as it’s released! Here’s a video preview (sorry for the poor quality, this was streamed from my iPhone):

FCSB (Five Column SpringBoard) Toggle Coming Soon

SettingsThe developer of the Five Column Spring Board hack posted a video of an upcoming feature. It’s just an icon that toggles the 5 or 4 columns when you tap it. You just wait for the iPhone to respring and you’re all set. Here’s the video:

FCSB (Five-Column SpringBoard) Now in Cydia

SettingsYou can now have five columns of icons in your springboard via Cydia. We wrote about this last week as a preview but it was released recently via the SOS iPhone source. We were keeping the install instructions on the down low due to the developer’s comments on others sites. Since he was still in testing mode, he didn’t want to be swamped with emails and bugs. Now that it’s in Cydia, there’s no hiding it. Here’s the original forum post about it at macthemes2.net and here’s the developer’s website: r-ch.net/iphone

Warning: This is not the original developer’s release. According to a post yesterday the developer wrote: “I need to finish safeguarding the uninstall/toggle and then it’s pretty much ready for release. Ste is out until Sunday, so probably early next week.” So, if you would like to hold out until the app is released by the original developer…it looks as though it will be released through the Ste source and not the SOS iPhone source. QuickTip – Adding Web Pages to your SpringBoard

AiS I will be sticking with my Safari theme with this QuickTip as well.

QuickTip – When in Safari, you can add any web page to your SpringBoard by selecting the + icon on the lower menu bar and then selecting the Add to Home Screen option. This will bring up a page displaying the web pages icon and title. You are able to change the title by taping in the title box and typing in a new title. Once you are finished, you can then select Add in the upper right corner. The web page will automatically be added to the SpringBoard with the rest of your icons. This makes for a quick and easy way to access the websites you visit most often. Screenshots below.

Thanks to everyone who has sent in a QuickTip…I have archived them and will definitely use them in the future! If you have a QuickTip you would like to submit you can email it to QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com. [Read more…]

Hack Preview – FCSB (Five-Column SpringBoard)

SettingsWe’ve been tipped off on a pretty sweet hack called FCSB which stands for Five-Column SpringBoard. It pretty much does what it says. What we’ve got is some screenshots and a video. The hack isn’t ready for public release yet but we’ll let you know as soon as it’s stable.

Note: The last screenshot was taken from our test iPhone, seems to be working :)

Sleep – Respring SpringBoard After Specified Amount of Time

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Sleep Sleep is an application that will automatically respring your iPhone or iPod Touch after a user specified amount of time. When you open Sleep, you will see two scrolly wheels…one for Hours and one for Minutes. You can use them to choose how long you would like before your iPhone/iPod Touch resprings. Let’s say, for example, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once you have chosen your amount of time, select Start in the lower left corner. This will bring up a Z.z.z.Z icon at the top of the page as well as the amount of time that is left before it resprings. Now, to actually enable Sleep, you will need to press the Home Button to exit the application (not the Exit button in the lower right corner). [Read more…]
