Today, Google announced that they are adding Gmail support to Google Sync. This will allow users to get push notification for their Gmail emails on both the iPhone and iPod touch.

Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Sync works with your phone’s native email application so there’s no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.

google_ad_height = 60;
//-->

If you already have Google Sync set-up on your iPhone for syncing Contacts and/or Calendar… you should be able to just toggle the Mail option On and the push notification will be automatically enabled. If you do not have Google Sync set-up yet, check out Google’s guide HERE.

Google Sync does use an Exchange account so, if you already have one Exchange account set-up on your device… you are out on Google Sync.

You can check out Google’s Mobile Team blog entry HERE, their Enterprise blog entry HERE and get more info about Google Sync and the iPhone HERE.

According to an interview with Joe Hewitt, the developer of the iPhone Facebook app, he is working on a few cool new features. Below is an outline of a few of those new features.

Contact list synchronization between your Facebook friends list and your phone’s contact list. “It’s a Terms of Service thing more than a technical limitation,” Hewitt said.

Push notifications. “We are working on push,” Hewitt said last night. “I plan to have it in the next major update, the 3.1. It will be the same kind of notifications you get on the website. I probably won’t right off the bat give you chat notifications. If you’ve ever used Facebook’s SMS notifications, you can have pretty granular control and it will be the same level of notification in terms of whose notifications you see and what categories you see.”

Saved, site-wide search. On the Facebook website you can now search across public updates and other items beyond just friends and pages. You can’t do that on the mobile app yet. “I hope but I can’t promise to get that into the 3.1 update,” Hewitt said. “We’re still working on getting that into the API. I’m also hoping to let you save a search to your home screen.”

You can read the full article HERE.

Doug and I were actually just talking about the ability to sync your Facebook contacts to your iPhone so, we were excited to see that feature. Hewitt has also said that he is planning on allowing the ability to hide both people and apps in the News Feed with version 3.1.

Original Tweet “I’m planning to allow hiding of people and apps from news feed in the 3.1 update.”

First, NuevaSync is not an app in the App Store, Cydia or Installer. It is a website that hosts an amazing service. It takes your Google contacts and Calendar and creates a Microsoft Exchange service for you to connect to. Now I’m gonna warn you right away of two things. First, they will obviously have access to all of that info because it will be on their servers, so if you’re all about privacy this isn’t for you. Second, this will wipe all your contacts and calendar off your iPhone. You must sync your contacts with Microsoft Outlook or iCal and export them as a .CSV file and import them into Gmail if you want to keep them.

Now that your contacts are into Gmail just go to NuevaSync.com and setup an account. Then follow these instruction to set it up.

NuecaSync’s website strongly warns: this site is in beta use it with your data at your own risk. We advise testing with an emulator and test data.

I actually did this to my iPhone and it worked well, I had a few duplicate contacts but that was Gmail’s fault. Also, this wipes out the pictures of your contacts and uses the ones in Gmail. <strike>I haven’t used it long enough to see if updating the picture on my iPhone changes the one in Gmail.</strike> Just tested and it does change your picture in Gmail if you change it on your iPhone. You can also pick just calendar or just contacts if you want. Since this works with Microsoft Exchange settings you must be on 2.0 for this to work.

UPDATE: This also works for Plaxo Contacts.

I have been waiting for an app like this for quite a while. Synchronization between the iPhone Calendar & Google Calendar. It even supports multiple calendars. The first time syncing took a while but I do have a lot of calendars and events. I got a lot of doubled up events because I had the same things on both the iPhone and the Google Calendar. I’m going to clear some out now that it syncs! Once you sync the first time it’s much quicker to sync. You can also see all the calendars shared to you and choose which one’s will show up on the iPhone.

1. Install GData Client Library from the same source. You can find this under the System category in Installer.
2. Install NemusSync from the Productivity category in Installer.
3. Add a new account; GoogleID includes your @gmail.com; give it any description you’d like; enter your password; tap get calendar list; select calendars; tap save.
4. Select Default Calendar; I assume this means this will be the only calendar written to on Google. That way when you add an event on your iPhone, this is the one it adds it to.
5. Tap Quick Sync Calendars; I haven’t heard the difference between this and Full Sync but I’m guessing a Quick Sync only syncs new changes.
