GeoHot, the developer who brought us the purplera1n jailbreak, has released his iPhone 3GS unlock, purplesn0w. Below is what he has to say about purplesn0w and instructions on how to install it. There is an update to ultrasn0w, iPhone software unlock, to version 0.8. This version of ultrasn0w is said to work on the iPhone 3GS according to MuscleNerd, a Dev-Team member.
Things to Note:
• “Ultrasn0W 0.8 (incl. 3GS support) (see Cydia).”
• “ultrasn0w is now 3GS friendly! First cross-platform carrier unlock, thanks partly to Apple :) Repo details at http://is.gd/1pRGL.”
• “The main 3GS ultrasn0w glitch on hacktivated devices is: need to do Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network settings once.”
• “If ultrasn0w already works for you, 0.8 won’t add anything new. This 0.8 is mostly for 3GS users or 3G outliers.”!–more–>
That means that the iPhone 3GS is now unlockable. All you need to do is go into Cydia and install ultrasn0w 0.8. If you are on a hacktivated device make sure you follow the instructions above.

Doug and I have a friend who recently purchased an iPod Touch. After doing so, one of the first things he asked us is if there was a way to have the “Slide to Unlock” go the opposite direction. I was like, why in the world would you want that? Apparently it is more natural to slide from right to left for a left-handed person. Well, it turns out that there is indeed a hack that changes the slide to unlock direction…who knew! (Probably all the left-handed people!)

Apple has seeded firmware 3.1 to developers and there is already info coming out on the new features. Of course, they have updated the baseband so if you want to unlock, don’t upgrade. Also, If you want to jailbreak, don’t upgrade. There is speculation that if you upgrade, you may never be able to jailbreak again. Here’s info from the Dev Team and then a list of new features.
You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title :) But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.
The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.
This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.
Great news! It looks like the same exploit used to jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch will work on the the new iPhone 3GS. No date on when it will be released but now that we know it can be jailbroke it shouldn’t be too much longer. Here’s what the Dev Team has to say:
About 5 hours ago (Thursday evening, less than a week after the 3GS launch), we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can use the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.
This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to unlock an iPhone 3G using ultrasn0w. In order to use ultrasn0w, you must have baseband 04.26.08…which means you need to be on the 3.0 firmware. Your iPhone also must be jailbroke in order to use ultrasn0w.

I know many of you are anxiously awaiting the released of ultrasn0w. I have been waiting all day to see if I would have more to report about it but, at least they are making progress. The Dev Team has released the jailbreak for 3.0 firmware for the iPhone 3G, 1st Gen iPhone and 1st Gen iPod Touch. That means the iPhone 3GS and the 2nd Gen iPod Touch on firmware 3.0 is not jailbreakable at this time. You can download PwnageTool for Mac only at this time. QuickPwn for Mac and PC will be out later. Make sure if you’re unlocked on iPhone 3G to wait until Ultrasn0w is released. Here’s the notes from the Dev Team Website:
1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you can get it via Cydia or Icy).
3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.0 capable version of PwnageTool.
6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release.
7. PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
8. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

It seems the DevTeam is gearing up for tomorrow’s release of firmware 3.0 and Friday’s release of the iPhone 3GS. According to their website, they will be doing a live demo of the 3.0 unlock, yellowsn0w, later tonight just before the release of the 3.0 firmware.
