Now that the iPhone 3GS is jailbreakable, ZodTTD has released version 1.0.0 of psx4iphone. <strike>I don’t see it in Cydia yet, but I’m sure it will show up soon.</strike> We will let you know when we see it. Make sure you have the ZodTTD source installed. Below is what ZodTTD has to say about the release (you will want to read it).

Note: This app will not show up as a new/updated app. However, if you search for it in Cydia, it will be there. Instructions are included in the package description. For more info, read below.

“With the release of the purplera1n jailbreak for the iPhone 3gs, the time has come to release an updated psx4iphone on my public Cydia repo.

I have made this build of the Sony Playstation 1 emulator, psx4iphone, to support all Apple devices running firmware 3.0 and above. Though keep in mind it will run about 300% faster on the iPhone 3gs, allowing for many games to be played. There are still some things to be worked out in the performance department, namely sound emulation slowing things down. If you can live without sound output, you have a mighty fast emulator.

This package is what I termed a “Donate & Download” Cydia package. Donations are very much appreciated, though are optional. By choosing the free option in the donation amount dropdown, you can receive it for free.

So what’s new in psx4iphone v1.0.0? The user interface is now up-to-date with the likes of the Gameboy Advance emulator, gpSPhone. I have implemented save states in addition to memory card saves. Portrait and landscape modes work. Tons of bug fixes have been made to the emulator itself, and I have been working hard on improving compatibility.

Instructions for installing psx4iphone can be found in the Cydia package info. Basically you place a PSX BIOS file and games that you must provide inside /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/PSX/. The BIOS file must be in all lowercase and be named scph1001.bin. For uploading the files on to your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPhone 3gs, I recommend using DiskAid. It sends files over USB allowing for fast transfers. It is also useful as I was not able to get SFTP working on the iPhone 3gs with the purplera1n jailbreak. Reportedly SCP works.

I would really love to see some nice videos of psx4iphone running on the 3gs! If you make one, let me know and link it here.

Hope you enjoy! Thanks,

ZodTTD”

Well, ZodTTD is at it again. He has got psx4iphone, a PlayStation emulator, running on an iPhone 3GS and says that it is pretty sweet.

“I now have psx4iphone running very speedy on the 3GS. It’s at the point where Final Fantasy 7 is fullspeed at very least without sound. The build is rough around the edges, as you can’t switch games without restarting the emulator, and only memory card saves are currently working, no save states just yet. Both these issues are being worked on.”

Below is a video demo of psx4iphone running on an iPhone 3GS.
Yes, that is right…the title of the application is A Falling Sand Game (which for some reason I find funny! ) This port is brought to us by ZodTTD…who also brought us psx4iphone, quake4iphone, genesis4iPhone, snes4iphone…etc. A Falling Sand Game is similar to EvolutionRGB (one of Doug’s absolute favorite games!)

Yes, that is right…the title of the application is A Falling Sand Game (which for some reason I find funny! ) This port is brought to us by ZodTTD…who also brought us psx4iphone, quake4iphone, genesis4iPhone, snes4iphone…etc. A Falling Sand Game is similar to EvolutionRGB (one of Doug’s absolute favorite games!) which we had in firmware 1.1.4.

So, like EvolutionRGB, the object of the “game” is to manipulate the environment. When the app opens, you can begin by selecting Let The Sand Fall. This will bring you to the main play screen where you see a few options. The little icons represent particles…such as, water, fire, sand, oil, plant, dirt…etc. Each particle responds differently with the rest for example, fire burns plants but water puts out fire. Once you select a particle, just drag your finger on the screen to drag that particle. You can also adjust the size of the particle using the slider bar.

Below the icons, you will see a Menu option. Here you are able to select particle types. When you select them, they are added to the main play screen however, only the most recent six will display on the play screen. So, when you select one it will add the icon to the right and remove the icon farthest to the left on the play screen.

In the menu you also are able to choose from a list of Actions. These include things like, Emit Oil, Emit Water, Freeze Time, Clear Screen…etc. When you select an action, it will cause that action to take place on your play screen. Any “Emit” actions will cause that particle to constantly flow from the top of the screen. If you select Emit Salt, it will begin a constant stream of salt falling from the top of the screen. To stop the Emit action, you have to go back into the Menu and turn it off.

The final option in the Menu is Options which allows you to choose to have a fall-thru bottom on your play screen and to change your play screen to portrait or landscape.

Overall, this app is not EvolutionRGB…but, ZodTTD did develop this app by hand…which I totally give him props for!! If you are into these type of games…it is definitely worth checking out! You can get it via the ZodTTD source.

Well well, after a week-end of travel, I sit down to get back to work and what do I find, a Doom port! Very cool! The port is of the shareware version of Doom. When you open the application, you will come to a screen where you will need to tap Play. This will bring you into the game. The controls are on the screen. You can use the arrows to move the direction the arrow is pointing. Yes, there are two right arrows and yes, they do the same thing…move your guy to the right. To shoot, use the gun button in the upper right. To walk, just tilt your iPhone back. To stop walking, tilt your iPhone forward. The Open button is what you use to open doors.

If you tap on the screen, you will get a menu with the options; New Game, Options, Load Game, Save Game, Read This and Quit Game. Use the gun button to move through the menu and then use the Open button to select a menu option. In the Options you the ability to End the Game, Turn the messages on/off, change the graphic detail, change the screen size, change the mouse sensivity (not sure what that is?!) and adjust the volume. If you would like to get back to the game, just tap the screen.

I find that I use the lower two arrow buttons most comfortably…except when shooting then I like to use the two arrows on the left. Overall, the game play is smooth. I did have the application crash twice but, once I was taking a screenshot and then other time I received a phone call. So, overall, I didn’t have any major issues with crashing. I’m not a huge fan of the controls, I keep trying to use the accelerometer to turn but, that is just personal preference! Let me know in the comments what you think about the game play.

Note: If you have own Doom, you can play the commercial versions of it on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just put the doom1.wad or doom2.wad files into the Applications/Doom.app folder on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

ZodTTD is also responsible for bringing us psx4iphone and snes4iphone. The application is not available yet, it is still in early development but below is a demo video and what the developer has to say about quake4iphone;

“In this video the controlpad screen in the bottom portion of the screen is not included. The initial release of quake4iphone will have similar controls to the Gameboy Advance emulator gpSPhone in portrait mode. Using the accelerometer is being considered for upcoming versions, if the demand is there.

I did include network play in this port, and allow for the command line interface to be used.

As firmware 1.2.0 is emerging, I must note I currently am in the process of organizing my code to update to it, including quake4iphone.

The game is in development and there is no information on when it will be released or whether it will be available via the AppStore of Installer. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Below is more info about Hedgewars and a demo video.

Hedgewars is a turn based, multiplayer, strategy game based on the ever so wonderful Worms Armageddon. In Hedgewars players take it in turns to control their team of hedgehogs, wielding a variety of wacky weaponry in order to annihilate the other team(s)! You can try the windows/linux versions over at Hedgewars (although we have progressed greatly from the current official release.)<!--

Hedgewars on the iphone will hopefully implement a fun and innovative control scheme. Utilizing all the features of the iphone, finger movements will control your hedgehog, taps and swipes will control your weaponry, want to alter the angle of your parachute drop? Just tilt the phone!
