Malicious Source – ipkg.mcafeemobile.com

We where skeptical of a comment that was posted on our site today and after some research….below is what we found!

Via ModMyiFone.com:

Do not add the source http://ipkg.mcafeemobile.com to Installer. It contains a Malicious Application that resets all .plist files, giving the iPhone/iPod touch a spinning wheel of death (SWOD)…

Via AlliPodHax from iPodTouchFans forum:

A repo that claims to be an official McAfee program for the iPod/iPhone and even has a redirect to mcafee.com has been found suddenly in installer, (If you use my source then there is no problem, I remove it)

The Repo is “http://ipkg.mcafeemobile.com”

DO NOT USE IT, I SPOKE TO MCAFEE OFFICIALS AND THEY SAID ITS A FAKE AND THEY MIGHT BRING A LEGAL SUIT AGAINST THEM!!

Also IT Totally messed up my iPhone, so there you go I break my things to save you guys…

My Repo Is http://ihacks.us/index.xml

Cheers,
Ben.

The list of warnings was extensive! So, do not install this source. If you have already installed it, you may want to uninstall it ASAP. Whatever you do, do not actually run the app (hit the Scan button) or it might delete all of your Installer .plist files – which hopefully you backed-up using TimeCapsule – if not, you could lose them all.

Jeez, and I also saw the ModMyiFone thread, someone is either defending it or just doesn’t know if it’s fake… One post, though, says that their iPhone won’t start.

    • Here’s my take, McAfee would not go around Apple and beta test a virus scan program for the iPhone through a hacker community. That would mean they support jailbreaking your iPhone (which voids your warranty) to install their app. They would more likely go through Apple’s App Store to distribute their product. The only way it would be real is if it was leaked or stolen from them and distributed without their permission. We have contacted McAfee and will let you know their response if we get one.

    • thx…

The only way, really, to convince everyone, is to actually try it out and make a video or take pictures or something… There is a video on YouTube, that doesn’t give me enough proof known for the fact that only ONE PERSON is testifying this throughout various sites.

  3. We have posted new info about this here: iVirusScan from McAfee is real!
