ScreenRecorder is simple little app that captures video of your screen. Just load the app and hit record, then load the app you want to record. ScreenRecorder runs in the background. Once you’re done recording, you have to go back into the ScreenRecorder app to stop the recording. The developer warns of not recording over about 45 seconds due to memory issues and then crashing. You can view the videos from the app but not in your camera roll. This means you have to SSH off the videos to then upload them to a online service. From my tests, it’s not a very high frame rate but better than nothing. There is also no audio.

ScreenDimmer

I’ve been looking for a replacement to an app I used to use called iDimLight. It basically mirrored the feature of the Mac laptops that dims the screen to save battery when you’re not using them. I tend to never use the autolock feature and just manually lock my iPhone. Now I can have my screen dim after being on for 45 seconds or whatever I set it to by a new app that works with 3.0 to 3.1.2 called ScreenDimmer.
The app installs into your Settings app and not an icon on our SpringBoard. From Settings you can:
- disable the feature
- have it turn off the backlight or dim it
- toggle option for dimming the screen during charging
- adjust the timing from 5 seconds to 15 minutes
- exclude the feature while running certain apps
- and choose to dim apps with disabled idleTimer (apps like navigation or video playback)
I love this feature and it’s one of those hacks I say is worth jailbreaking for.

Friday Night Movie Night: Vertical Scrolling

I’ve been hearing about this hack for a little while and, from what I can tell, it’s not in Cydia yet. Here’s a video preview of the hack which shows vertical scrolling on individual pages. Early jailbreakers will remember that vertical scrolling was the original way to fit more icons on the iPhone.

A i r o – WinterBoard Theme

A i r o, by Pur3x, contains 61 icons (some of which are alternative icons), wallpaper, dock, lockscreen wallpaper, lockscreen battery, badges and quite a few UI mods. Overall, the theme is nicely designed and the UI mods are subtle and clean. I did notice that the “Slide to Unlock” text looks a little funky… it is moved over to the right but still slightly visible. You can fix this by using either the Slide to Unlock Killer or the No “Slide to Unlock” Text hacks. For more info about the theme, check it out on deviantART. You can get the A i r o theme via the modmyi source.

Categories, an application that allows you to organize the applications on your SpringBoard into folders, was recently updated to version 2.99… with a few small updates since then. If you have not had a chance to check it out, you will find it to have a slightly new look. The new user interface and the ability to hide icons from within the Categories application itself are a few of the new features of the update (see change log below for complete list of changes). Iconoclasm

Iconoclasm has been on the Cydia Store for around a few months now and I think it is a great way to mod your iPhone/iPod Touch. Basically what it lets you do is change how many icons you can have on one springboard page, a little like FCSB, FiveIRows and other springboard hacks. Iconoclasm however, is a little different to the others in which it lets you break away from the normal columns and rows on a springboard page and have icons in a place in which you like.
When I first bought Iconoclasm from reading the description in Cydia, I thought it would automatically let you place the icons wherever you please just by using the normal ‘wiggle mode’ but this isn’t the case. The layouts need to be made using a plist file which tells Iconoclasm where to let the icons be placed on the springboard. There are many layouts available for download in Cydia, many of which are made by myself. If you are a little bit more advanced you can of course make the layouts yourself. Another great advantage of Iconoclasm is with the setup of themes like the iNav theme, instead of having to use masses of blank icons you can just drag the normal icons straight into place. There are also a few of these types of layouts in Cydia.

iBlueNova – Transfer Files Via Bluetooth
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free 15 Day Trial then $5.99 |
iBlueNova, an application that allows the transfer of files via Bluetooth, was released yesterday. Before you purchase the app, you are able to test it with a 15 day trial. To download the trial, select the Purchase button in the upper right corner (where the Install button normally is). This will not actually purchase the app but, will install the free 15 day trial.
Once installed, the app is decently easy to use. It allows you to transfer Pictures, Music, Videos or Other Files. You can view all the available Bluetooth connections in the Device Discovery option. Here you are also able to view the strength of the device’s WiFi, the device’s name, Address and Class as well as Favorite specific devices. You can also view your transfer activity allowing you to see the progress of transfers or stop a transfer.

It seems as soon as I wrote about ProSwitcher, the next day an update was released. Here are some of the features of the new release. Show Icon toggle (allows for activation from springboard icon); Empty Tap to Close toggle; Show Default Apps toggle (hide apps like phone and mail); Empty Style options of Text, Blank or Disabled.
It also feels a little snappier but I have some many hack running I’m never sure what’s causing slow downs. Let me know if those of you having lag issues see improvement.
ProSwitcher – Palm Pre-styled Application Switcher

| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
Backgrounder is a really great hack for the iPhone. It lets you keep an application running in the background even when you hit the home button to close it. This is great for apps like Pandora and other music apps or anything else you might want. The annoying part for me has always been moving around between those apps. Usually I just use the search to find them because I have so many pages of apps I don’t want to scroll around looking for them. One newer feature of backgrounder displays a badge on the icon of the apps running in the background so you know what’s still running. Now with all of that said, a new app helps streamline all of this called ProSwitcher.
This app has a ton of customization that I could talk about all day but I’ll tell you the main point and you can mess with settings. Basically what it does is when you activate it from one of it’s many ways, it zooms out of the app, kinda like the way multiple webpages display in Mobile Safari, and you can flick left and right through what’s running. It also triggers the app you’re currently in to run in the back ground. Here’s some screenshots and a quick video demo. The apps free so check it out and if there’s something you don’t like, make sure you check all the features and options ’cause a lot of it can be changed.

More Cydia Crashing (December 28th)
My Cydia started crashing on my today and I’ve heard of others having the same problem. I’m looking for a fix and if I hear of one I’ll let everyone know. I’ve found a solution by searching Twitter
It seems the only people having trouble have the macciti/zodttd’s source. There is no need to restore your iPhone. Here is a simple fix:
- Connect to your iphone/ipod via either ssh, mobile terminal, ifile, diskaid or some other type of usb file system browser. Browse to /var/lib/apt/lists/
- Delete cydia.zodttd-1.com_repo_cydia_dists_stable_main_binary-iphoneos-arm_Packages. Mine was actually /var/lib/apt/lists/cydia.zodttd.com_repo_cydia_dists_stable_main_binary-iphoneos-arm_Packages.

Endless Walls is a pretty cool wallpaper application. When you first open the application, it does require you to create an account (or log in if you already have an account) though the process is quick and easy.
Once signed in, the app will automatically begin displaying wallpapers. You can pause the automatic slide-show of wallpapers by tapping the pause button on the lower menu bar. If you do find a wallpaper you would like to save, you can quickly save it to your Camera Roll using the save button all the way to the right on the lower menu bar. Read more
Ustream + Backgrounder = Live Streaming Apps

Ok, so today I was at Sports Clips getting my son’s hair cut and Buffalo Wild Wings next door has wifi so I decided to test out the Ustream app some more. I wanted to tweet about it so I used backgrounder to keep Ustream running in the background while I tweeted. What I found out later when I got home to watch the video is if you combine Ustream with Backgrounder it streams your springboard along with any app that’s running. Unfortunately it only streams the top half to two thirds of your screen. Check out the videos below:
Saurik Updates Cydia to Display All SHSH Files on File
Saurik recently tweeted that he has “finished upgrading the in-Cydia SHSH on file firmware display” and “it will now show the full list of on file firmwares.” What does this mean? Apple has made it so you have to connect to their servers via iTunes when you restore your iPhone 3GS. This let’s them approve what version of firmware you are restoring too. Then, they make it so older firmwares won’t restore, which forces you to upgrade.
Saurik has built his own authentication server that you can point iTunes to and then restore to any firmware that you’ve had installed and jailbroken since 3.0. You must approve Cydia to connect to Sauriks servers to store the SHSH authentication file. Previously, Cydia would only show that there was an SHSH file stored for firmware 3.0, but now it will show others like 3.1 and 3.1.2.
This doesn’t affect iPhone 3Gs or the 1st Gen iPhone because only the iPhone 3GS has hardware encryption.
