Stack Coming to 3.0 With More Features! *Updated*
The developer of Stack, Steve Troughton-Smith, has been posting lots of info about the upcoming version of Stack for 3.0. The big feature here is multiple stacks. Sounds like you’ll be able to do as many as you want. The stacks will also act like icons so you can drag them around just like normal icons. If you want to test out Stack you can do it now if your iPhone is jailbroken and running firmware 3.0. Just visit steventroughtonsmith.com/stack to download and get install info. Eventually there will be a full release in Cydia when it’s finished.
I’ve also added some screenshots below to an example of Stack 2.2 with a theme applied. Read more
Tethering Early on 3.0 Without Jailbreak
I so got this to work. Just go to this site: http://help.benm.at and follow the steps. Pretty sure AT&T, O2 and others are not going to like it so I’d be careful. We only have AT&T EDGE here so it was pretty slow but it worked with a Macbook over bluetooth!

List of Must-Have Utility and System Applications
I decided that it is time to create a list of the all the must-have system/utility applications for the iPhone and/or iPod Touch. So, below are 16 system and utility applications that you will definitly want to check out…for more info about each one, click on their title, it links to more info. I tried not to list the apps in any particular order also, some of the apps listed overlap in functionality (for example, if you have IntelliScreen…you would not need a status bar notifier application). Let me know in the comments what some of the must-have apps are on your iPhone/iPod Touch! Ok, here we go!
Note: These are all jailbroke applications (for more info on jailbreaking…check out our f.a.q page). Read more
Customize 2.2.1
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
Well I thought this was going to be big news. And, it’s a start… If you remember Customize you know what I’m talking about. But for those of you who don’t, here’s a little info. Customize lets you change all kinds of things on your iPhone or iPod Touch: sounds, system strings (like the Slide to Unlock text), icons, wallpaper, etc. There’s also a huge theme database within the app. It’s all very nice but tonight, it’s just not working for us. Very buggy, crashing our iPhones, not keeping changes, etc. We’ll keep testing it and watching for updates but I’d wait on this one for now.
Their site is also back up and running where you can upload your own themes from your computer that will show up in the list right on the app. Here’s a quote from the front page of their site:
Customize 2.2.1 (compatible with iPhone 2.2.1 firmware) is now available. You can download it here: http://customizeapp.com/uploads/release/Customize-2.2.1.zip.
It will also become available through Cydia Installer soon.
Best, Spicy

Thanks to Ed for tipping us off to this!
Dashboard for iPhone Preview
Steven Troughton-Smith, the developer of Stack and other apps, has recently posted some videos of a hack for the iPhone called Dashboard for the iPhone. Looks pretty sweet! Right now he’s only shown a clock and sticky note widgets. The Dashboard appears when you tap the home button once from the springboard (home screen). Just tap the home screen again for them to disappear. Not sure how this affects the short cut that jumps you to the first home screen when you are on other home screens. The effects are pretty nice (see videos below).
LiveTime Becomes LiveClock, Gets An Update
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
LiveTime has changed it’s name to LiveClock by request of LiveTime Software. Along with the name change comes an update to version 0.2. There is now a “Dark” theme you can enable through WinterBoard. This is for when you are using a darker theme for your iPhone and need lighter hands. WinterBoard is also no longer needed for the basic hack to work.
UPDATE: Version 0.3 has been released with support for a digital display and an option for no second hand. So far we haven’t got the digital display to work yet…
SpinBoard Preview - Rotating SpringBoard Icons
Here’s a preview of a new hack coming to the iPhone. It allows your icons to rotate when you rotate your iPhone based on your accelerometer. The features are limited and it’s in the very beginning stages. We’ll keep you informed as soon as it’s released! Here’s a video preview (sorry for the poor quality, this was streamed from my iPhone):
FCSB (Five Column SpringBoard) Toggle Coming Soon

The developer of the Five Column Spring Board hack posted a video of an upcoming feature. It’s just an icon that toggles the 5 or 4 columns when you tap it. You just wait for the iPhone to respring and you’re all set. Here’s the video:
wigglefree - Stop Your Icons From Wiggling
January 16, 2009 by Douglas
wigglefree is a simple MobileSubstrate extension that removes the wiggling from the icons on your SpringBoard. It’s that simple! Why would you want to do this? Because the wiggling takes up precious processing power. All you have to do is download this file and follow these instructions from the developer:
- Upload the .deb file somewhere via SFTP.
- Log in to your iPhone as root via SSH.
- In the directory containing the deb file, run dpkg -i wigglefree-1.0.deb
- Respring. To bring wiggly back: just uninstall the package through Cydia.

FCSB (Five-Column SpringBoard) Now in Cydia
January 16, 2009 by Douglas
Filed under Cydia, FCSB Five-Column SpringBoard, hack
You can now have five columns of icons in your springboard via Cydia. We wrote about this last week as a preview but it was released recently via the SOS iPhone source. We were keeping the install instructions on the down low due to the developer’s comments on others sites. Since he was still in testing mode, he didn’t want to be swamped with emails and bugs. Now that it’s in Cydia, there’s no hiding it. Here’s the original forum post about it at macthemes2.net and here’s the developer’s website: r-ch.net/iphone
Warning: This is not the original developer’s release. According to a post yesterday the developer wrote: “I need to finish safeguarding the uninstall/toggle and then it’s pretty much ready for release. Ste is out until Sunday, so probably early next week.” So, if you would like to hold out until the app is released by the original developer…it looks as though it will be released through the Ste source and not the SOS iPhone source. Stack 2.1 Update
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
I love this app! Stack brings the stack feature from Leopard to your iPhone. If you’ve never heard of Stack, it’s basically a stack of icons in your dock that when tapped, it opens a group of apps. The new features are pretty nice. You can now choose to have your stack in the middle or the bottom right. The center option works well with a 5 icon dock. Just get a blank icon and put it where your stack is. That way the other icons will line up right.
To access the program’s setting you need to go to your Settings app. This is new in this version. If you make changes to its position you’ll have to respring to see the effect (I use SBSettings for that). You can also force the grid view & toggle the stack to be curved or straight although these features aren’t new. Read more
PdaNet 1.50 Update (Tethering)
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
PdaNet has recently updated to version 1.50. You can now tether using the USB cable instead of Wifi. This will help save battery on both the iPhone and the laptop you are using. Also, when connected via USB you can ssh or scp using the address “my.iPhone”. Finally, if your iPhone switches from 3G or EDGE to Wifi it will continue to share to the computer when using USB. These are all great, useful features and I recommend updating soon!
Reflective Dock working in 2.2
I found a way to get a reflective dock in firmware 2.2. It’s not superhard, but you will have to know how to SSH into your iPhone. It’s also static, so it doesn’t change as you drag icons on and off the dock. You’ll need to go here to download the file for a 4-5 icon dock or go here for a 3 icon dock. I’ll be showing you how with the 4 icon option. Upload the folder named “Reflective Dock (4 Icons)” to your iPhone to the following folder: /private/var/stash/Themes
You’ll also need to copy the 4 icons that are in your dock into the “Reflective Dock (4 Icons)”. You can get these in the application’s folder. Now edit the Widget.html file and add in the icon names where it says img src=. If you have a custom dock you’ll have to put that in the same folder too named dock.png. If you’re like me and use a transparent dock then just delete the dock.png and ReflectiveDock.png files. You should just be able to activate it in WinterBoard and you will now have a reflective dock! Let me know how it works for you! Read more
Hack Preview - FCSB (Five-Column SpringBoard)
January 7, 2009 by Douglas
Filed under FCSB Five-Column SpringBoard, hack
We’ve been tipped off on a pretty sweet hack called FCSB which stands for Five-Column SpringBoard. It pretty much does what it says. What we’ve got is some screenshots and a video. The hack isn’t ready for public release yet but we’ll let you know as soon as it’s stable.
Note: The last screenshot was taken from our test iPhone, seems to be working

Activate Emoji (Japanese Emoticons)
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
If you’re looking to add emoticons to your iPhone or iPod Touch, you might be surprised it’s already built in. The catch is that it’s only available when your iPhone is set to Japanese language. That might make running the rest of your iPhone a little difficult. Fortunately there is a fix in Cydia. It’s just titled Emoji and it’s through iSpazio. Emoji is very poplular in Japan and was added in firmware 2.2.
Once installed you just go to your Settings App > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Japanese > turn on Emoji. Now you can go to your Keyboard and you will see a little globe in the bottom left corner. Just tap it to see all the different emoticons. The tabs across the bottom show all the different categories and once in a category you can swipe left or right to see more. The first tab is the most recently used emoticons. This will fill up as you use them. Read more
