I love photostream because all the photos my wife and I take get pushed to a flat screen that is hooked to our Mac mini with a screensaver displaying our photos from photostream. We had a small LCD picture frame but it fried after only a few months. The one problem with our photos is that most of them are square because we use Instagram a lot. Instacube is the solution! A decent sized, wireless, battery powered, square screen for $150.
The resolution of the Instacube screen is 600×600 pixels. I’m not sure what the DPI is but after looking at an iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and a Macbook Pro Retina it’s going to seem blurry to me. For the price, I’m not sure how they can do much better and you normally will not be looking at it right up next to the display so pixelation should not be too much of a problem. The system is Android based and it has a touch screen. Does this mean we can hack it :) There are only 3 buttons: Power, toggle & like. You can also “bypass the ones you don’t like by using the touch screen.” You can choose to see your own photos, friends or popular. You can even program it to display specific hashtags. This would make a good gift, decoration in your own house or a great promo tool for a business.
The video below does a good job of showing off Instacube. This is a Kickstarter project and it is just about to hit it’s goal at the time of writing of this article and they still have 27 days left. Check them out at kickstarter.com and if you do decide to order one now, you won’t see delivery until March 2013
