New App – SMSNotify 0.01

SMSNotify is a pretty sweet new app that makes your iPhone vibrate every 15 seconds when you have an unread text message. This app does not have an icon and is not added to your SpringBoard when you download it…it is just a code app. I think this is a great idea since I tend to miss the one time that the iPhone does notify me that I have a text message. The only issue I have found is that it does not work when your phone goes into auto-lock mode…however, if you have your iPhone set to check your email every 15 minutes (or whatever you have it set for) it will vibrate when your iPhone “wakes up” to do it’s checking! What would be really cool is if you could also have it make the “new text message” sound too and if it would do it when you have a unchecked voicemail! This app is available in the Installer.app through the Ste Packaging source. Here is the screenshot:

Hi, have to say that your site is one of the most up to date that I have seen on the iPhone.

I hope that we get an app like this for Calendar and appintments, since sometimes I dont hear them and it would be nice to have a repeating alarm.

Thank you! And yes, I always need repeating alarms!! When I set an appointment I always set it up to alert me like 30 minutes before, 15 minutes before and then 5 minutes before! I would LOVE to see this come out for unchecked voicemail…that would be sweet! I always seem to miss my voicemails…probably because if I was by the phone I would have answered it! So when it does my one alert I’m obviously not near my phone! :)

How do you set 3 alarms like that for appointments Brooke?

  4. Brooke on January 4th, 2008 10:00 am:

When you open your Calendar and add your new appointment there is an option called Alert. It then gives you the options to choose how many minutes, hours or days before the event that you would like to be alerted!

Hi, can someone help me, when i am trying to install SMSnotify on my iphone with version 1.0.2, it gives me an error message ‘instal BSD subsystem package first’. Whats that and where do i find it?

  6. Brooke on January 6th, 2008 11:16 am:

@Avnish…that is a great question! You can install BSD Subsystem through the Installer.app…it is under the category System. BSD Subsystem is just a code app so you will not see an icon for it on your SpringBoard…once you have installed it, restart your iPhone and then go in and install SMSnotify. It is as easy as that! Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey Brooke. Im having a problem, I cant find bsd subsystem in my instal apps. I looked under system and as well as “all packages” but its not there… any ideas?

Are you sure you don’t already have it installed? It doesn’t put an icon on your SpringBoard it is just a code app. Also, make sure you have the AppTapp Official source installed…though, I’m sure you do! Let me know if you are still having issues and we can try a few other things.

Hi, I have installed (and reinstalled) BSD Subsystem through the Installer.app as recommeded, and it seems to work fine. Each time when loading SMSNotify I get an error message “Package download failed”. Have not seen answer to this problem in any threads. Using vers. 1.1.2 (3B48b) as loaded default for use in Malaysia. Any advice? Cheers

Problem sorted. I had to download the BSD Subsystem from another source. Then SMSNotify works to spec, but I have switched it off because the time I most need a prompt is after I have been away from the phone – by which time it is sleeping to conserve battery and pwd protect. The vibrate is next to useless when its in a bag. Great idea, but needs some more work. Will investigate further and revert if I find any interesting tweaks.

I was able to install it using the Installer on 1.1.3 and 1.1.4. On 1.1.3, I found this somewere so here is the details. You will have to create this symbolic link in order for it to work:

    ln -s /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS /private/var/root/Library

On 1.1.4, I ran into a problem. Apple had already created the sms.db database in /private/var/root/Library/SMS. After installing smsnotifiy, the iPhone was still notifying me even though I have deleted all my SMS messages. I found out that the /private/var/root/Library/SMS/sms.db database was not being updated. However, the sms.db /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS was accurate. Using again winSCP add this lines…:

    mv /private/var/root/Library/SMS /private/var/root/Library/SMS.old
    ln -s /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS /private/var/root/Library
