Restoring your iPhone can be very scary and may not always work unless you put the iPhone into recovery mode first. We will try to help you through this process. Here are the steps:

1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable.
2. Close iTunes.
3. Hold the home & lock button at the same time until you see the connect to iTunes symbol on your iPhone. Connect to iTunes
4. Open iTunes.
5. You will see a pop up notifying you that iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode (see screenshot below). If you would like to restore to the newest version just click restore in iTunes and wait for your iPhone to restore. If you would like to restore to a previous version see step 6.
6. To restore to a specific version just hold the shift key (PC) or command key (Mac) and a window will open which allows you to select a specific version to restore to. You can download all versions at AppleiPhoneSchool.com/firmware. Just select a version and wait for your iPhone to restore.Recovery Mode

    Does this work with iTunes 7.6?

    @jman
    Yes you can. You have to copy this folder :
    /private/var/root/Library/SMS/
    before restore and then copy it back to the phone.
    Good luck!

    @jman…you can also use the SMSD app to backup your text messages to email. Just open the app…select more in the upper left corner and then select Backup to Mail…and it will email them all to you!

    @Peter…yes, this works with iTunes 7.6.

    If I messed up the fonts moving (due to lack of space), where can I get a copy of them fonts to upload and replace with iBrickr?

    also note, if you upgraded to 1.1.2 then restore to 1.1.1 you will get error 1015, i think this is because 1.1.2 updates the modem firmware. There are fixes for this 1015 error, just google for it.

    Took me more than three hours to figure this out, trying to save someone else some time.

    so could i do this and restore my 1.1.3 iphone (otb 1.1.2 made week 47) to an earlier version and then jailbreak from there and get full functionality of the phone?

  10. usrbin on January 30th, 2008 10:39 am:

    thanks Stening, but so far no issue with the 1.1.2 so i’ll stay with it

    background: I had 1.1.1 and upgraded to 1.1.2 in order to install the dev 1.1.3 upgrade.
    After having 1.1.3 crash and no customize or summerboard i got rid of it.

    @Max…one of our writers (Jacob) upgraded to 1.1.3 via iTunes and is still unable to downgrade (and have his iPhone work properly). If he gets it figured out…I will let you know…we will do a post about it.

    @Brooke.
    Did Jacob try a softupgrade back to 1.1.3 after his disappointing downgrade from the official 1.1.3 ?
    I figure that the 1.1.3 softupgrade OS will work well with the 1.1.3 base band firmware that he is currently stuck with…. – I welcome any comments on this hypothesis.

    Hi, I’m on 1.0.2, Jailbroken and unlocked for any sim, installer present. I can’t find any info on how to upgrade? All info seems to point to upgrading from 1.1.1, so I’m not brave enough to risk it!
    I’ve also had issues the not being able to hear incoming callers?

    cheers for any help.

    Any way to safely restore an iPhone 3GS jailbroken and unlocked on 3.0.1?
    Just curious before I go purchase a warranty that requires that it not be unlocked…
