Do not use password to change the password on 1.1.3, it is currently broken and will make SpringBoard crash continuously.
Other than that…I’m not sure what version 2.1 changes. Let me know in the comments if you know of any changes.

I just updated my bsd subsystem to this version, now installer wants me to update to natetrue’s v1.5. Should I do it? Why would it want me to update again?

the passwd reminder is really important! I did not read it since I updated from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 via soft update on the first day and well, I had an ever re-starting springboard. If you want to change the password make sure you create the crypted password manually (use as salt: “/s”) and copy it manually to master password file.

I just used passwd(it’s a very bad idea) and springboard began the non-stop rebooting. In your comments you said you did that before, so could you tell me how did you recover from this disaster? I even tried recover from iTune, but iTune cannot finish it because of some error.

not easy. I did all the unlocking from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 again, re-installing every application (since I did not know at that time where the problem was). But I know there is a solution, you got to replace your changed “etc/passwd” and “/etc/master.passwd” with original ones. Get them from an other user and make sure you copy them very quickly onto the phone using a WiFi connection and FUGU on a mac (WinSCP on y Windows machine)

Did the update, and since I can’t get in with terminal, always get a Login incorrect when I try root/alpine or mobile/dottie. Any idea why is this and how I can trouvelshoot it?

Tino is right…there is a fix in the Installer through the BigBoss source…it is called BSD Subsystem 2.0 Termfix.

Try uninstall, soft reboot, and reinstall Terminal vt100 + the Term vt-100 fix for BSD 2.1 (by BigBoss) from Installer.
sorry..it’s still under the name of BSD 2.0 Termfix, but it had been updated to fix in BSD 2.1.

@dabrai_Sid…whenever you get the “Error, Package Download failed” it has to do with the server you are trying to download from. Either the server is overloaded or something is wrong with it. Give it a few minutes and then try again.

Still have BS issue after installing BSD 2.1. Reinstalled vt100-terminal and BSD 2.1 Term Fix and still have the problem. If I set term manually, IE export TERM=vt100, I get Name collision between vt100 vt100 for every terminal type in /etc/termcap. BTW, I am running FW 1.1.2.

I’ve been trying all the day to Download BSD Subsystem 2.1 and everythime I try it keeps me sending “Error Package Download Failed” the strange here is that the Downloading Bar actually seems to download something, does anyone have the same problem? or a solution?

OK, I can ssh to my phone from a separate machine and use alpine as the root password, but when terming in from iphone itself no password will work. I’ve applied bigboss’s termfix but to no avail.
@Everyone getting the “package download failed” error…whenever you get the “Error, Package Download failed” it has to do with the server you are trying to download from. Either the server is overloaded or something is wrong with it. Give it a few minutes (or hours) and then try again.
@rhfroe…we used the ZiPhone jailbreak on one of our iPhones and was able to SSH in using the password alpine.
@theJam…did you get it figured out? It is weird that you can ssh in from a separate machine but not on the actual iPhone!

I’m having the same problem just upgraded my 1.1.2 OTB to 1.1.3 using ziphone and now cant install BSD subsystem! Very annoying. Anyone got any ideas.
Yug_rover: I was being stupid just worked it out. Install the community sources 3.4. Then go to your sources list and manually refresh, an update will pop up for community sources that takes it to 3.6. Install this refresh again and then BSD subsystem should install ok.
I just upgraded from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 and unlocked using Ziphone 2.4. Then I encountered problem installing BSD Subsystem 2.1. It always gave the “Package Download Failed” error message. Tried it at home and at work. Same problem. On repeated tries, however, I managed to finally have it installed. I didn’t do anything differently except to add the i.unlock.no as a new source. But I don’t think that was the reason why it worked this time. Anyway, for those who are facing problems, just be patient and try another time. It should work!

One more thing. I also installed Community Sources v3.6 before I was able to download and install the BSD Subsystem 2.1. Not sure if that contributed in any way to the success. Thanks.

And before you install any more apps, install BossTool under Utilities and relocated your Fonts, Ringtones and Applications to the bigger partition on your iPhone. Mine had only 34MB out of 300MB left before BossTool came to the rescue!

For those of you that are having the “package download failed” problem. I was in the same boat as you before and tried different things and nothing worked. There is a very simple solution that someone suggested here as well:
1) You need to update to Community Sources v3.6 by going to Sources and hit refresh
2) Click on the Update tab at the bottom and Now here is the tricky part! instead of selecting the individual item (Community Sources in this case) and pressing update, click on UPDATE ALL button at the top
3) at this point you shouldn’t get the “package download failed” error and can now proceed to install BSD

I have 1.1.1 on my iPhone and had bsd2.1 installed. When I downloaded a program, that needs bsd to run, it wasnt working. I went to installer and to the unistall portion, where all thestuff u have downloaded goes. When i tapped on bsd subsystem, in the top right corner normally where it would say uninstall it said reinstall. That caught me be surprise. I hit reinstall and I’d began downloading like normal. When it finished it said “error package download failed.” so I tried like 20 more times and same thing happens everytime. Ok updated to comm. Sources 3.6 and I can still ssh my computer with winscp. But the bsd isn’t working and isn’t downloading, why would it need to be reinstalled and just stopworrking? What am I doing wrong? Any help would be great. And if there is no ways to get 2.1 working, how can I downgrade to 2.0? And if I can’t uninstall bsd 2.1, because it says reinstall not uninstall, what needs to be done? Somebody please help me

I had the same problem. If you turn off your iphone. Then hold down the home key while attaching it to your computer. It should go into restore mode and bypass the crashing springboard. From there you can do a restore through itunes.
I also used passed. I am a huge fool and can admit that freely. I can ssh into my phone though so I believe that I have hope. Can someone please email me the original “etc/passwd” and “/etc/master.passwd” files that applestar mentioned?

Ok, I am totally bummed right now. I updated BSD Sub v2.1 yesterday, then tried to install summerboard 3.2 and it completely installed but the themes would not work (and it said inactive). I then:
1st. I installed 1,1.3/4 Theme Fix… no luck
2nd. Smb Themes Fix… no luck
This is where it really sucks!
3rd. I uninstalled summerboard completely and attempted to reinstall it. It downloaded completely and when it went to the install bar, the bar did not even begin to fill before it just switched to the home screen as if nothing had happened. I tried again and the same thing happened.
4th. I tried to install SUID Lib Fix, but it did the same thing as the summerboard app.
5th. Tried to install other apps to see if they would work but they wouldn’t. They would download and immediately switch to the home screen. Things like ebooks would work, just not apps.
Any help is very appreciated! Thanks for all the great posts!
oops forget to mention I’m on 1.1.3
For all those getting the “error package download failed.”, try killing installer.app by holding the home button for 5 seconds or so while in installer.app, and then restart it and try the install again. Did the truck for me.

Hi I have downgraded my Iphone from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1. I now want to install BSD subsystem but I get a error message “host not found”. I know many people here had the same problem so far, but none of the solutions I found worked! Has someone an idea how to install BSD somehow in an alternative way (other sources, manually…ect.) I really need help guys,

I’m running 1.1.4 & have been facing issues with BSD subsystem 2.1. Whenever I try to install particular application from installer, it says that BSD subsystem is reqd… even though I have it on my iPhone. So when I try to uninstall it and go to uninstall option, it shows up with a button of ‘Reinstall’ instead of ‘Uninstall’… and if I go with Reinstall option, it prompts with an error message: Error: Package Download Failed !

For you who cant listen to musci go to settings>general>reset>reset all settings this usually works

i’m not sure you want to hear this… i actually even restored original settings through itunes i then re-unlocked/jail-braked the phone and…once i updated to the new installer bsd subsystem appeared again!!
i want to get rid of it because it just drains my battery way faster.
anyone else has suggestions?
