IconScrabble for the iPhone runs through Jiggy. Jiggy is application development and running software for the iPhone. I hadn’t tried Jiggy out yet, because I thought it was for developers only. But I have been shown the light! Install instructions and screenshots after the break.

Jiggy and Jiggy Runtime can be found in Installer.app under Development if you have added the Jiggy Main Repository Source. There is a version of Jiggy from Ste Packaging, but I found that version does not work with 1.1.3, so it is HIGHLY advised that you install the Jiggy source. You will get conflicting version in installer, so be careful not to update it back down to .21, .25 is the latest version at the time of writing this article.

And the Scrabble app can be found Here. You will need to SSH into your iPhone with WinSCP, or the OSX equivalent, and drop the Scrabble.app folder into your /Applications folder.

You must SSH into your iPhone and goto /Applications/Scrabble.app and set the permissions to 0755. Or this will not work! If you have command line access you can do this with the single command:

*NOTE* This command may differ depending on where your applications folder is. It must be the actual folder and not the symbolic link:
chmod -R 0755 /private/var/mobile/Applications/Scrabble.app/*

If you have done all the preceding steps, just restart your iPhone and Scrabble will be on your springboard! Getting Scrabble on an iPhone is quite a feat, but they did a great job with this game. Holding down on a piece will make it movable, you can then look above the tip of your finger to see the tile and place it on the board. Place your tiles and hit confirm. The screen then goes black and you pass it to the 2nd player, the second player taps the screen and then takes their turn (very nice method of keeping your tiles hidden from the other player). That is the only current problem, there is no ai to play against yet. Defiantly try this out if you are a Scrabble fan like me and my wife are!

Credit goes to:
digicide – original writter
Jake Wolpert – updated for 1.1.3 and some bug fixes.

    Great post and game.

For everyone that has to SSH a lot, i recommend just typing, “chmod -R 0755 /private/var/mobile/Applications/” into your command line. I am PRETTY sure it will turn everything to 755

I have no idea how to install this–I lost you at “There is a version of Jiggy from Ste Packaging, but I found that version does not work with 1.1.3, so it is HIGHLY advised that you install the Jiggy source. You will get conflicting version in installer, so be careful not to update it back down to .21, .25 is the latest version at the time of writing this article.” Can’t someone just put the right Jiggy and the game into a repo somewhere and call it a day? Gosh.

@Nope – Theoretically you could just do “chmod -R 0755 /*” that that is scarry!

And some command line utilities require an * to denote applying it to all files in all subfolders. At least I think that is how it works. :)

Haha…yes, this is a tricker app to install. What you need to do is:

    1. Add the Jiggy Main Repository source. The url is – jiggyapp.com/i
    2. Install version .25 of Jiggy and Jiggy Runtime
    3. Download the Scrabble file from the link above and save it on your computer
    4. Add the Scrabble file from your computer via SSH to your /Applications folder.
    5. Change the permissions of Scrabble folder to 0755
    6. Restart iPhone

Let me know if that helps or not!

tried many variables but scrabble icon not showing up on springboard

  6. Brooke on February 22nd, 2008 12:55 pm:

@johnnythefox…I just did this on my iPhone and, the app did not show up until I restarted my iPhone…then the app showed up on my SpringBoard but then it would open and close again until I changed the permission of all files in the folder Scrabble.app on my iPhone to 0755…now it is working fine. Did you unzip the file before dragging it onto your iPhone? Did you use the correct Scrabble zip file?..there are two files one for 1.1.3 and one for 1.1.2 and below.

  8. Brooke on February 22nd, 2008 1:35 pm:

@cassandra…that is what happens when you haven’t changed the permissions of the folder. You will want to select all the files in the Scrabble.app folder, right click, select properties and change the octal to 0755. You will also want to do the same thing for the two folder inside the Scrabble.app folder…open those too and change all the files permissions to 0755.

I am using 1.1.2, and have installed the “Scrabble.” I have been having the same problem as Cassandra, so I changed the permissions for all the files to 0755. But, the issue has not been resolved. Any ideas?

  10. Brooke on February 22nd, 2008 3:17 pm:

Make sure when you select the files in the Scrabble.app folder you also select the two folders too…then open the two folders and do all their files. Then restart your iPhone.

for everyone who ssh’s and drops apps into their iphone and then logs of their computer

to avoid having to go back in their computer install drop copy, and squid on your iphone

squid can change permissions and drop/copy lets you delete files

I have been trying to get this game on my iPhone from a long time… I have Jiggy and Jiggy Runtime on my phone. I used SSH and set permissions to 0755. When I open the app, it loads the main screen – which says “Please wait while the dictionary loads….” and then after a few secs, it returns to the Springboard.
This app has lots of bugs…

If you’re without wifi access and want to install this here is a way.

Required packages: Term-vt100, Download Files Plugin (from the Safari Plugins source), and “CLU – zip” (from R4m0n Repository).

    Browse to http://groups.google.com/group/jiggyapp-devel/files in safari.
Find the appropriate zip file and click it, click Download and wait for it to finish.
Return to the home screen and launch Term-vt100.

Type the following commands (when typing file paths you can use tab completion, just touch the screen for a menu to show up, then swipe down and left for tab):
    cd /Applications
(it’s best to use tab completion on these steps, since your filenames may differ)
    mv ~/Downloads/Scrabble-113-b.zip ./
    unzip Scrabble-113-b.zip
    chmod -R 0755 Scrabble.app
    rm Scrabble-113-b.zip

Now restart your phone and you’re good to go.

    Doug on March 13th, 2008 9:16 pm:

Where were you able to find the 0.21 versions of Jiggy and Jiggy Runtime in order to downgrade? I can only get the 0.26 versions to pop up on the installer under the “Development” folder. Please help !

    Alexander on March 18th, 2008 12:30 am:

Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier. To get the 0.21 Run Time; you download it from here: http://jiggyapp.com/i/zips/jiggy-rt-0.21.zip, unzip it and copy the contents into usr/lib. You should get a warning inquiring if you would like to overwrite, just click on Yes to All. Now, restart the spring board, and you got it.

  26. Jash Sayani on February 28th, 2008 7:38 am:

Finally got it working on my 1.1.2 with Jiggy Runtime 0.21 and set the permissions to 0777 with Squid on the iPhone. 0755 didn’t work. However the game is good. Just a few features missing like – Save game at exit and single player mode. I was about to complete one of my games and was winning but got a phone call and a new game started!

I tried copy the .21 jiggy files to the iphone after it sounded like from others above that the latest version wouldn’t work with Scrabble, but I’m still stuck at the “loading screen”….can anyone with a 1.1.4 iphone give the exact steps of how to get scrabble to run?
