It’s here! We’ll be testing soon. Again, no Installer yet, but you want to try it here’s the instructions and downloads (be sure to also read the Important Notes section below):
- 1) Uninstall WinPwn 1.0 first.
- 2) First create a custom IPSW using the IPSW Builder.
- a) you will need the 2.0 firmware file. The one for the 1st Gen is different than the 3G. You can download them from our firmware page or you can click upgrade in iTunes and then unplug your iPhone to force iTunes to download it. The file will be stored in your local drive, usually C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR WINDOWS USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates- 3) Click “Ipwner” and browse for the custom IPSW that you just created. This will pwn itunes and allow you to flash Custom IPSW files via DFU mode
- 4) Once you have pwned Itunes, put your phone into DFU mode. If you don’t know how to do this click Here.
- 5) Once you are in DFU mode Itunes will pop up and then you can hold shift and click restore and browse to your custom IPSW file.

Important Notes
• Remove Winpwn 1.0 completely if you have it installed. Installing over the top of WinPwn 1.0 will cause problems.
• Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes 7.7
• If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix
Make sure you leave your thanks to the WinPwn team in the comments or at their website, winpwn.com

Your download is most likely corrupted, either that or you don’t have winrar installed. If its a corrupted download try downloading it again and extracting it. Should work.
ChaosOnFire reply on July 24, 2008:
Sorry just re-read and you said you installed it. Make sure you have iTunes 7.7 I know a few of the instructions for the old jailbreak had you downgrade to 7.5

i’m no expert on the subject, but dont we need to upgrade to f/w 2.0 through itunes first so that we can have itunes make a backup of 2.0 with our settings so that when we restore to a pwned f/w we can backup our 2.0 settings/contacts/mail/etc?
Douglas reply on July 24, 2008:
This is what I would do, just sync. Make sure your contacts, calendar, mail, bookmarks are set in iTunes to sync with something like outlook, etc. then do not restore a backup when setting up.
You can do what you’re saying and that would work too. I’m always afraid of using a backup when changing firmwares. Try it and let us know how it worked.

but what from recents, sms, emails and reminders will one lose if they first sync their 1.1.4 iphone with itunes 7.7, restore pwned 2.0 and then do a fresh sync again instead of backup?
or is it better to 1st upgrade via itunes 7.7 to 2.0 from a jailbroken+unlocked 1.1.4, sync with itunes 7.7, restore pwned 2.0 and then either restore the backup created in 2.0 or do a fresh sync again?

doug, one very important question: i have a jailbroken 1st gen iphone with 1.4 f/w, do i need to restore it first in itunes 7.5 to go back to a clean 1.4 f/w (clean means OTB, not jailbroken), before upgrading to 2.0?
because i’m afraid of bricking my phone if i immediately upgrade to 2.0 even if my iphone still is jailbroken.
to recap: do i need to restore to a clean 1.1.4 firmware BEFORE UPGRADING to 2.0 or i can just jump to 2.0 even if my iphone is still jailbroken?
please help.

Hi,
will you be able to post an artical about how to jailbroke and unlock a 3G phone? am new at this and would like detailed instructions on how to do it because some of these names i dont know what does they mean or how to create them or find them (e.g IPSW)
your help will much much appreciated.
Thanks,
[Reply]
atrophic reply on July 24, 2008:
IPSW is IPod SoftWare (I think). I do know that it’s the file you use to update firmware. iTunes downloads it to do the upgrades and uses it for restores. Creating a custom one involves downloading the default one and then using the winpwn or pwnage software to customize what you want on it.
However, nothing is capable of unlocking the 3G yet. Jailbreaking is possible (allows access to the file system and therefore installation of arbitrary apps, not just the ones through the app store). Unlocking (allowing usage on a carrier other than the ones Apple has contracts with) does not yet work on the 3G phone.

Search appleiphoneschool.com for winpwn. They’ve gone through the steps of creating your own custom IPSW before.
Do keep in mind that the vast majority of the apps you have on your JB 1.1.4 will not yet work on the JB 2.0.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:05 am
Please inform me if I’m talking about a completely stupid thing but I was just wondering if the anomaly about Ziphone changing your bootloader PERMANENTLY to 3.9 and you upgrade to 2.0, which “I guess” needs a 4.6 bootloader, will the upgrade gives more problem than it solves? Will we be able upgrade at all 2.0 if our phones were jailbroken using Ziphone 3.0? Could it be the very reason that we’re seeing so many errors while attempting to upgrade to 2.0?
Please correct me if I’m talking gibberish here. Or I’m just a moron toever think about that.
Because if you can upgrade to 2.0, regardless of the bootloader your iPhone has, then we can say that Ziphone never really harmed a phone after all!
Am I correct?

I’m having the same problem as many of the people on this thread. Whenever I try to create a custom IPSW, I get the error “Failed to create IPSW”. I tried to create the custom IPSW from the 2.0 firmware file supplied by this site on both my Vista and XP computers, which are both running iTunes 7.7, and they ran into the same error. I’m wondering if I’m just using the wrong settings, in which case I have it set to “Install Cydia”, NOT “Fix Youtube Activation”, “Use Custom Pictures”, NOT “Activate Phone”, NOT “No Wipe”, “Neuter Bootloader”, NOT Update Bootloader (I’m on BL4.6), “Unlock Baseband”, and “Autodelete Bootneuter.app”. Also, does the custom IPSW builder require that the iPhone be plugged in, because I have been keeping the phone unplugged.

KingCut reply on July 24, 2008:
your program might be corrupted, either that or your computer is too slow. It happened when i was running a bunch of other apps at the same time. This also happens if you try to make custom IPSWs in the same session, i suggest restarting the program and/or your computer if this is a continuous problem.

i did it, used the correct 2.0 firmware, successfully created the .ipsw file, checked the Cydia box (only, not the youtube activation, cuz i have AT&T), and shift+restored to the new jailbroken software
everything works great, except I HAVE NO SIGNAL
not after rebooting, repeating the Winpwn process, and im pretty frustrated
Any help, anyone?

You probably left the activate iPhone box checked under the Advanced tab.

In winpwn, click on the “HELP” button. You’ll find your answer

Worked for me. Flawlessly. I did enough reading to learn that if you’re on XP don’t check Cydia, (at least not until the fix is out) and if you’re on AT&T, you don’t check “Activate Phone” OR “YouTube activation Fix.” In fact, I didn’t check anything except for the custom images, which tells me that it’s jailbroken.
Quote from WinPwn.com:
“If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix”
After installing the custom ISPW, iTunes asked me if I wanted to restore from a backup. I said yes. It certainly took a while, but GOOD NEWS! My backup from pre-jailbreak worked fine when restored to my phone post-jailbreal. Everything except my music, because I manage that manually.
BTW I have an 8GB iPhone 3G

hmmm.. I tried loading a custom firmware i made in itunes but it fails and I get error code 1601. I tried it in DFU and restore. I’m not sure why I cant load the custom firmware. I’m using the latest winpwn.

I had the same problem “error Code 1601″, I was in DFU, custom PSW 2.0 and Win Vista 64. In my opinion we need to come from a 1.1.4 Pawned version and upgrade to 2.0 otherwise does not work.
I`ll try the Apple one that seems well done, stay tuned !

I’m getting error 1600 & 1601 too. I’m wondering if I put my phone into DFU mode and not recovery mode. I did just like the video says in the link above. Normaly with my old iPhone when I did this I would get the symbol on my phone showing me to conect to iTunes. When I try to put my iPhone 3G into DFU mode my screen just goes black and when iTunes loads it says my phone is in recovery mode. So am I doing this right? Is it the same way to put an iPhone 3G into DFU mode as a 1st gen iPhone? Is my screen supposed to go black or am I supposed to get the connect to iTunes symbol?

I have a bigger problem now. I tried to restore the custom ispw in normal mode and got error 6. Now my phone is stuck with the connect to iTunes logo. I’ve tried everything to get out but then I get stuck with the apple logo. I can’t get past these two logos. Help please. I hope I didn’t turn my new phone into an expensive paper weight.
