Maps Enhancer Maps Enhancer is an application that adds a few more options to the stock Maps app. Once installed, you can go into your stock Settings applications and you will find MapEnhancer.

The Maps Enhancer app adds the ability to keep your Maps cache and the ability to set the maximum zoom level for Standard, Satellite and Hybrid maps. The zoom levels range from 2 – 19, 2 being zoomed WAY out (I’m talking WAY out!) and 19 being zoomed in. You can also choose to go back to the default zoom setting.

I haven’t been able to give the app a ton of testing but, what I did test seemed to work fine. Let me know in the comments if you have use Map Enhancer and what you think. You can get Maps Enhancer via the BigBoss source.

Doug and I took the boys hiking this week-end and on the way there, Doug was talking about having an application just like this! He wanted one that defaulted the zoom out a little further and cached the map (because with our great AT&T service, we didn’t have any problems at all with Map not displaying. *sarcasm). So, I think this is one we will be keeping around.

I really like the cache option, but whats the reason for maximum zoom level?

When I tested it, it seemed like whatever I changed the zoom level to, that is where it started on the map. So, if I chose a zoom level that was zoomed way out and then had Maps find my current location, it would start with the map zoomed way out and then I could zoom in to get more specific location info.

That way, every time the map refreshes, it isn’t zoomed way in. It will be zoomed to whatever distance you choose.

    Does that make sense?

    ooh okay.. :) thanks Brooke

The main reason for why I’ve implemented it, is that Israel satellite maps (and maybe other countries too) don’t have zoom levels larger than 18. Maps application zooms in automatically, and that is very annoying. So it’s pretty useful for Israeli users.
Another reason I can think of, is that when you save large caches (using software like GMDL), you don’t want all the zoom levels, because the cache gets too large.
Personally, I cached the whole Israel map. Without the last zoom level, it’s ~700MB. With the last zoom level, it’s ~20GB!
So I cache all the zoom levels except for the last one, and use Maps Enhancer to keep Maps from using the last one.

By the way, Brooke, thanks for the post. Maps Enhancer gets a lot more coverage than I thought it would get, heh :)

I tried to add the BigBoss source, http://apt.bigboss.us.com/repofiles/cydia/, to Cydia but it said “Did not Find Repository”

Help please, what is the right source?

Will this eventually fill up my iPhone? It would like to see a feature where you can drag a slider to choose how much cache size you want to use, from stock, to maximum. That would be awesome!!!

As a T-Mobile Pay-As-You-Go customer, I am loving this. I don’t have 3G/Edge and use wifi for my data connection. It’s nice to be able to take my Google maps along when I am out of wifi range. Thanks for the review!

Instalei o maps enhancer no meu ipod mas ele não está guardando o cache. Mesmo com essa função ativada, o cache está sempre em zero e não consigo ver rotas com o wi-fi desligado (apenas a última). Alguém sabe me dizer o pq? obrigado.

I cannot seem to locate the app in settings. I’ve tried installing from both Cydia and Rock. Actually – App Store installs are the only ones that seem to be in there. I also have Preference Loader 1.2.1 installed… What am I minnsing here?
