Remember George Hotz? He’s the guy(kid) that unlocked the first iPhone and traded it for a Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. Well, he’s done it again, but this time it’s a jailbreak, not an unlock. This is for the iPhone 3GS on the 3.0 firmware using Windows. I had to start the app over a few times to get it to work but I got it! If you have troubles, let us know in the comments. Yes, this is what you’ve all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it’s awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn’t show up after running Freeze, reboot.

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it’s just a matter of tools.
Props to chronic dev for their help, and to kroo for writing v2 of Freeze. And props to Saurik for making an awesome package set. Note the binary size of purplera1n, it’s smaller than C++ hello world. No 20MB thing that needs to be torrented. And no IPSW to download. This is how jailbreak should be!

I got it on my second attempt. Didn’t work the first time because I had the iPhone plugged into my dock.
Hey Matt, did you get a chance to check out all the Cydia apps yet? Is Winterboard workin’?
Saurik tweeted that the jailbreak doesn’t contain the right patches for winterboard so it doesn’t work. I have tested WeatherIcon, Five Icon Dock and SBSettings and they all work. However RotationInhibator doesn’t work, I got safe mode but the wheel kept spinning for a while and it was flikering from Springbooard to lockscreen. Eventually it stopped and I uninstalled in safe mode and it was fine

I haev an iphone 3GS and just ran the jailbreak (MAC version). MivTones won’t work for me. When I put in my username and password, I get the following message:
faild IMEI
I logged into MivTones with my account so I know my account is fine. Anyone else seen this.
I got it to work on windows 7… cydia is running smooth!
Was there a trick to getting it to work with Windows 7. I’m running the 64 bit version?
heres what i did
pugged in my iphone
made it rain
made my iphone go into recovery mode
i exited out of the program and made it rain again
it rebooted my iphone
ran freeze
rebooted again
Thanks but the program keeps shutting down after I start it. Thanks anyway. Tried it on my wife’s laptop which has Vista, but I didn’t know if you could do it with another itunes or the one u use to sync. Now it’s stuck on restore. Just restoring now. I guess I’ll leave it until they find a win 7 solution.
Have you tried compatibility mode? Or run as Admin? Right click on the program and click “Run as administrator…” that may help. If not, go to the properties, compatibility and try changing it to XP mode.

This is great. A seamless JB with no warnings, caveats, no-no’s. No BS. I switched my Mac over to Windiws and did the thing in 45 seconds.
Intelliscreen works like a charm. You can now install it from Cydia, so you don’t have to wait for RockYourPhone to update their app for the 3GS.

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. Unplug the phone and plug it in again.
Yea I have the latest version of itunes. Tried the unplugging about 50 times.. Still no success. Does the iTunes need to be running at the same time I try to “make it Ra1n”

Make sure not to extract the application on your CPU. Just run as is and it should work.
my phone is going crazy now…. the 3g turns on then off i cant connect to wifi…

Doug had that problem…he had to rerun purplera1n on the computer.
ya it isnt doing anything..now im restoring it thro itunes..cuz it wont do anything now..but ya it would just stay on the itunes screen on teh phone..i reinstalled purplera1n..ran it and ran it..nothing….

how do u run freez??? where do u get it from?
After running purplera1n the iPhone reboots and it appears on your springboard.
purplera1n only runs on english window versions, on the othger versions it crashes.
You have to copy your iTunesMobileDevice.dll to the path “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin” to make it run on the other window versions

Why isn’t the missing winterboard files available during the cydia update when u first run it after the JB?
i plug my phone in to my cumputer and then itunes comes up..and goes into restore mode..i get the restore mode screen on my iphone..then i click on purplera1n..a box pops up let it ra1n..i click that the all it say in that box is DONE,WAITING FOR PHONE TO REBOOT..nothing happens…i have tried everything..hmmmmmmmmmmmm
just confirmed winterboard is not working on 3gs. dont bother installing it bcoz it will keep sending ur 4ne to safe mode.

purplera1n worked perfectly on the XP partion on my BrickBookPro. What was all this crap from DevTeam about needing the iBEC and iBSS files, and diving through restore hoops to get them?
All that “crap” is to ensure that you can jailbreak when 3.1 comes out. That’s where the problem is going to be, not for 3.0.
Some keep saying that this early jailbreak was a bad idea, and will help apple patch it for good for 3.1, but I’m happy that it’s out now.

Im having same problem to every1 here, When I run purplera1n. I just get the itunes screen.. Im running vista.. Im givin up until someone comes up with a solution.. Im not keen on restoring the iphone again!! Ive done it twice now..

The JB worked great the second time. The forst time I had itunes running and it put my phone in a constant state of safe mode. I restored and JB without itunes running and now it is fine. The 3gs is smokin with cydia. Dont care much about themes just glad to have SBsettings, MXtube, Five Icon dock back. Does anyone know if status notifier is working??

how exactley did you do it…man i have tried everything my phone just ends up being stuck in restore mode..with the itunes screen on it…
Step 1: plug phone into pc, click on PR once iTunes logo appears reboot
Step 2: after reboot click on PR again, man on phone appears, I didn’t wait, I just rebooted again.
Step 3: u will have freeze icon click to install cydia. Once cydia is installed reboot, done
do not have iTunes open

purplera1n will put in recovery mode and will show the picture and reboot
but freeze will not show up and the program will stay on done, wait for reboot
So you saw the full graphic picture and your phone rebooted? You might be there. The program stay on “wait for reboot” just close it. Look around your apps in your phone, freeze should be there. If it’s not … reboot again yourself. If you got the image and the phone rebooted the first time, I’m pretty sure it worked.
Mine went to “connect to itunes” the first try. Make it Ra1n again and it worked.. DL Cydia as i type this.
OK… Um.. Lots of weird stuff going on now… I cannot SMS.. It says failed to send. Also my calls will not end after pressing end call. I think I will be going back to non jb..
It might help to know more. I’m on ATT as a “legit” user and all my services worked after the jailbreak. You?
I am also a “legit” at&t customer. I think it was a freak thing. I’m not sure if I’ll JB again until dev team has more stable JB.

It’s not up to us. Apparently there are some patches missing to get it to work which haven’t been created and then some work on Winterboard itself. I’m sure it will all get there in time.
I stopped using WInterboard a while ago because it was definitely slowing down my phone, but now with this faster phone, it might not take such a huge toll.
purplera1n RC2 is out and GeoHot says “No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik’s court” So this means he must have now incorparated the correct patches but Saurik just needs to update WinterBoard itself.

haha so it took me like 20 tries to get purplera1n to work yesterday but it finally jailbroke my 3GS. However, the RC2 update works even better. I just used it over the RC1 release and all the issues I was having have worked themselves out. No more weird errors in mobile terminal etc.
Also, yesterday I used a totally different computer to jailbreak which was a Windows XP machine. Then I came home saw the RC2 update and used my own computer which is a Vista machine. So, it doesn’t matter where you use purplera1n which is a NICE BONUS!
Just waiting for Sauric to update Winterboard and this jailbreak will be near perfect! :D

RC2 didn’t work for me. Stuck at logo. Just finished restoring my phone … now I’m tired. Will try to jailbreak again some other day … I should have just kept using the RC1 I had. Goodbye Intelliscreen for now.
Same for me it stuck as the GeoHot screen. Restored and tried again and it was fine :)
Does anybody now something of ssh/Winscp it doesent work with the old password root/Alpine with this jailbreak on Firmware 3.0

***Rotation Inhibitor*** SOOO needs to be added to the list above as a NON WORKING app. Well at least it didn’t work for me after I installed it. It made my 3GS go into a endless respring state. I couldn’t get into my phone. Thank goodness I knew how to get rid of it. I really didn’t feel like restoring then rejailbreaking again after I JUST DID THAT and got most my stuff back on there lol.

The five Row hack doesn’t work got my iPhone 3gs stuck in safe mode couldn’t get out of it had to restore!!

Uninstall whatever you put on there before it went into safe mode and reboot. Should boot up normally.
hey just wondering after cydia is installed is freeze meant to stay on your iphone
Just download CyDelete from Cydia and then in Settings enable Non-Cydia Deletion then delete freeze as you would a App Store app.
dtunes is running well on 3gs
i get stuck at recovery mode.. how long does that take? cause then i stopped program and tried to start it again and then im stuck in recovery mode still but the program says waiting for phone.. and iTunes pops up after the first reboot and says it cant recognize my phone.. is that normal?

Question I ran purplera1n and it did everything perfectly except when I go to (freeze) to install cydia…it goes through all the steps and says finish…when I reboot my 3gs (by holding the power and home button) & go back to the home screen cydia isn’t there can anyone help!
