##ICON_NAME## I don’t know if you guys have seen this yet or not but, TechnoBuffalo recently did a very nice video comparison of the iPhone 3GS vs. the Motorola Droid. The video is just over 17 minutes long and covers everything from browser usability and speed to customization to maps to app availability.

I’m sure all the Droid ads may have peeked your interest… so, take a look. Personally, I’m partial to the iPhone… obviously! :)

New 3GS Models Come With New Bootrom, Blocks Jailbreak

AppleAccording to info from some Dev Team members, new iPhone 3GS models are coming with an updated bootrom version 359.3.2. The current exploit, 24kpwn, is not working on iPhone 3GS models with this bootrom. We’ll know more and more as people buy iPhones but beware if you are buying a new one. Although there is no working jailbreak for this bootrom, hackers have always made it past any roadblocks from Apple and will likely make it past this one eventually. Here are a few quotes from the Dev Team on Twitter:

##ICON_NAME## Last week, I wrote about a rumor that strongly indicated the release of an 8GB iPhone 3GS. Well, it seems that the guys over at MacRumors have confirmed this rumor. Apparently, on Roger’s website, there is now a comparison of the iPhone 3GS that includes an 8GB version of the phone. So I guess that the leaked Rogers internal memo from last week was the real deal!

Apple The guys over at the BoyGenuisReport say that they have had a few tips recently indicating that Apple is gearing up to release an 8GB iPhone 3GS. It seems Rogers in Canada is “in the process of shipping iPhone 3GS 8GB flavor handsets to stores.” I’m not big into unconfirmed tips and what not but, it seems the they do have a few images that are slightly more convincing.

The info in the image (which apparently looks to be some sort of memo) says:

Rogers has now launched the iPhone 3GS in 8GB Black (120080). Effective immediately, this will be ordere… (120050). In order to complete a smooth transition over to the new piece, inventory levels of the 3G version v… out of stock of an 8GB model. Please keep in mind that we are aiming to reduce our inventory levels signific… model and would ask that as you receive the new SKU that you continue to sell out of the older version prior…

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this strategy, please email…

Thank you all ahead of time for your help in making this a smooth and easy transition.

purplera1n Now Available for Mac [iPhone 3GS Jailbreak]

##ICON_NAME##George Hotz has now added a mac version of purplera1n to purplera1n.com and an upgrade to the PC version. This is currently the only option for jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS. Let us know how it works for you. Again, no support for winterboard yet.

You asked for it, and we delivered. I’m not a mac coder, so AriX and westbaer stepped up to do it. Check out AriX’s blog here. Download link on purplera1n.com, and thank AriX and westbaer next time you see them!

Also, some more payload stability improvements were made, and the windows version was updated to RC2a. There is no reason to run RC2a if you already have RC2 installed.

##ICON_NAME## We are getting emails from people asking how to get SSH to work on the iPhone 3GS. The only thing that is different is that you have to change the File Protocol to SCP. Below are step-by-step instructions.

1. You will need to have a jailbroke iPhone or iPod Touch in order to SSH into your iPhone or iPod Touch. For more information on Jailbreaking, please see our F.A.Q. Page.

2. When you jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch, the Cydia application will be added to your SpringBoard with the rest of your applications. You will want to go into Cydia and search for the OpenSSH application. If it is not already installed, you will need to install it. Read more

iphonePurplera1n has been updated and we’re hearing of much better success from users. There’s still no support for Winterboard but I’m sure it won’t be too long. I can’t wait!

Vista, Windows 7, International, 64-bit support
Less flakiness in the payload
Cydia tar cleaned up
Improved logging with slightly more useful errors
New kernel patches, codesign errors gone. Props posixninja
Added vm_map +x, passed vm_check
No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik’s court :-)
Still in beta, use caution

You can download Purplera1n for Windows only at purplera1n.com.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS With purplera1n [Windows] *UPDATED*

iPhoneRemember George Hotz? He’s the guy(kid) that unlocked the first iPhone and traded it for a Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. Well, he’s done it again, but this time it’s a jailbreak, not an unlock. This is for the iPhone 3GS on the 3.0 firmware using Windows. I had to start the app over a few times to get it to work but I got it! If you have troubles, let us know in the comments. Here’s the link to download: purplera1n.com. So far I’ve got Qik to work! iPhone 3GS Prototype Hits Ebay

Ebay It seems that a white 16GB iPhone 3GS has shown up on Ebay. According to Electricpig apparently the Ebay lister seems to have acquired the iPhone in May (a month before the June 19th release date) from someone who found it in a airport. Yep, that’s right, he says the prototype iPhone was just hang out at the airport. Oddly enough, the lister does have a decent Ebay history.

The iPhone apparently cannot be activated or restored and according the the Apple Genius people it, “is definitely iPhone 3G S, He matched the Serial Number on the SIM Tray with the Serial Number on the LogicBoard – they are the same, but He told me, nothing he can do about it, because He was unable to locate the number in Apple’s Database.” Read more

How to Prepare your iPhone 3GS for Jailbreak

##ICON_NAME## Last night, the Dev-Team released some info about the how to prepare the iPhone 3GS for jailbreaking. However, there wasn’t a guide yet. This morning there is a guide. Below is the info via the Dev-Team. You will want to check out their website for the how-to guide.

"Remember we warned you to stay away from any updates to 3.1 if you want to be able to jailbreak or unlock your 3GS.

Well this is an additional message to all you 3GS owners that would like to jailbreak your device sometime soon, but this advice comes with a warning! A warning that if you accidentally upgrade to 3.1, you will not be able to use Ultransn0w, so please re-read and double check this warning at the bottom of this post before proceeding.

You may have read or heard about techniques to capture files during the iTunes restore process. These will be required to jailbreak your phone in the near future, most of the methods involve icky USB snoops. Well, there is an even better and more reliable method to get your hands on those lovely files.

During the restore process iTunes nicely keeps these oh-so-top-secret-files in a lovely accessible place for us to copy out and backup, that place? /tmp on Mac OS X or %TEMP% on Windows. Thanks Apple — handy!

The downside to this approach is that you actually need to go through the restore process to get these signed files, which has risks if you are anywhere near 3.1 or 3.1 beta :-)

If you are ready to proceed and you know the risks we’ll get down to the nitty-gritty -

So during a usual recovery with iTunes, your signed iBEC is written to /tmp and during a DFU mode restore the signed iBSS is written there also. To be sure, restore in both modes one after another to be able to grab them both. You’ll need to keep an eye on the temp directory and copy it before it is deleted again by iTunes. I’m sure some nice folks will create a tutorial about this, we’ll link to the first person who makes a good one.

Should you choose to accept this mission, act fast, this needs to be done quickly! But again, always, always double check here to see if 3.1 has been released, if is has, then don’t do this.

WARNING!! - DANGER, WILL ROBINSON! - NB! - REMEMBER!

IF YOU CARE ABOUT ULTRASN0W, BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS METHOD! Do not attempt this if you have downloaded the 3.1 beta. You do NOT WANT TO accidentally restore your device to 3.1 beta — you’ll lose ultrasn0w if you do! BE WARNED :-) "
