I don’t know if you guys have seen this yet or not but, TechnoBuffalo recently did a very nice video comparison of the iPhone 3GS vs. the Motorola Droid. The video is just over 17 minutes long and covers everything from browser usability and speed to customization to maps to app availability.
I’m sure all the Droid ads may have peeked your interest… so, take a look. Personally, I’m partial to the iPhone… obviously!

purplera1n Now Available for Mac [iPhone 3GS Jailbreak]
July 6, 2009 by Douglas
Filed under iPhone 3GS, jailbreak, purplera1n
George Hotz has now added a mac version of purplera1n to purplera1n.com and an upgrade to the PC version. This is currently the only option for jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS. Let us know how it works for you. Again, no support for winterboard yet.
You asked for it, and we delivered. I’m not a mac coder, so AriX and westbaer stepped up to do it. Check out AriX’s blog here. Download link on purplera1n.com, and thank AriX and westbaer next time you see them!
Also, some more payload stability improvements were made, and the windows version was updated to RC2a. There is no reason to run RC2a if you already have RC2 installed.

Filed under iPhone 3GS, jailbreak, purplera1n
Purplera1n has been updated and we’re hearing of much better success from users. There’s still no support for Winterboard but I’m sure it won’t be too long. I can’t wait!
Vista, Windows 7, International, 64-bit support
Less flakiness in the payload
Cydia tar cleaned up
Improved logging with slightly more useful errors
New kernel patches, codesign errors gone. Props posixninja
Added vm_map +x, passed vm_check
No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik’s court
Still in beta, use caution
You can download Purplera1n for Windows only at purplera1n.com.
Jailbreak iPhone 3GS With purplera1n [Windows] *UPDATED*

Filed under iPhone 3GS, jailbreak, purplera1n
Remember George Hotz? He’s the guy(kid) that unlocked the first iPhone and traded it for a Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. Well, he’s done it again, but this time it’s a jailbreak, not an unlock. This is for the iPhone 3GS on the 3.0 firmware using Windows. I had to start the app over a few times to get it to work but I got it! If you have troubles, let us know in the comments. Here’s the link to download: purplera1n.com. So far I’ve got Qik to work! Read more

MacBreak recently took the iPhone 3GS and hooked it up to a bunch of pro level video gear. They used a PED3 iPhone stand to mount the iPhone. Kinda crazy idea. Pretty sure they spent more on the equipment than the iPhone. Here’s the video:
Spell Number – Free Emjoi [Emoticons]

Ok, this is not new information however, I felt like I should write about it because I am highly confused as to why a $1.99 Emoji app is in the Top Paid Apps when you can get Emoji for free!
For those of you who do not know what Emoji is, according to Wiki, it is “the Japanese term for the picture characters or emoticons.” It basically enables those cute little emoticons on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just to make one thing clear, Emoji are already technically on your iPhone and iPod Touch, Emoji applications just enable them.

Apple Changes iPhone 3G S to iPhone 3GS
June 24, 2009 by Brooke
I can not tell you how happy it makes me to see that Apple is quietly (yes, quietly) changing the name of the iPhone 3G S to the iPhone 3GS. I have actually been watching this for a couple of days now. It started with their Press Releases and News Headlines. I was waiting until they made changes on their actual website before writing anything. Last night, they finally changed their iPhone 3GS information page to say iPhone 3GS instead of iPhone 3G S. iPhone 3GS Disassemble and Repair Video
June 22, 2009 by Brooke

Directfix.com recently posted a video on how to disassemble and repair an iPhone 3GS. If you are the fix-it type and you break your touch screen or you want to replace your battery or LCD…here are step-by-step instructions on how to do that! I honestly would never try this (Doug might) but, it is interesting to watch.
I also found that if you are willing to give it a shot, you can purchase the touch screen (IP-2320) and the LCD (IP-2321) for $69.99 each on their website. Below is the video demo.

1 Million 3GS iPhones Sold
June 22, 2009 by Brooke
Ok, many of you have probably already heard about this but, in just three days (from Friday to Sunday) Apple sold over a million 3GS iPhones. So much for the thought that the new features were not cool enough for people to upgrade! It would be interesting to know how many of the 1 million are new iPhone customers and how many are upgrades.
Apple also said that in the first five days of the 3.0 firmware release, over 6 million people have download it! I think out of all the firmware updates, more people have upgraded to 3.0 than any other firmware. Let us know in the comments if you didn’t upgrade to the 3.0 firmware and why you didn’t!
“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

If you follow MuscleNerd on Twitter (he is a member of the Dev-Team) you may already know this information but, this morning he twittered that the iPhone 3GS is being shipped with baseband 04.26.08. That is the baseband that ultrasn0w can be used on. Meaning, if the iPhone 3GS can be jailbroke, it can be unlocked using ultrasn0w. Read more
Waiting in Line for the iPhone 3GS [liveblog]
The following is my experience waiting in line for the iPhone 3GS. I will be live streaming video later once we get closer to opening (7:00am CT) (didn’t live stream due to rain)
9:07am – Doug has his new iPhone 3GS which he says “Rocks!” Seemed like a painless process and MUCH faster than last year and the iPhone 3G. He is headed home to sync.
8:52am – Hi, this is Brooke. I have been instructed to update Doug’s post for him. They let him into the AT&T store early (before the 10:00am time mentioned previously) so, he is currently in the process of getting his new iPhone 3GS. I have a feeling there will not be any video this time around like there has been in the past. It didn’t work out this time. But, Doug should have info about his new iPhone 3GS soon. YAY!
