WhatsApp Bought by Facebook $19 Billion – Why?

Ok, so this is going to be a very humbling article but I just gotta know from the iPhone community, What is so great about WhatsApp? I’m guessing it has to do with the fact I live in the US and most of my friends have iPhones so we use iMessage. I also use Facebook chat for some group messaging. So, when I open up WhatsApp, there are only about 20 of my friends that even show up out of my 1,200 total iPhone contacts. It feels a lot like Google+: If no one is on it, I’m not going to use it. And, if another app already has the feature, I’m not going to use it. I have lots of other apps like that, for example: Sceene, Skype, Voxer, Skype, HeyTell, Kik & Viber.

Facebook Update 5.1

Facebook has made some nice improvements to their app recently. Finally, it’s exciting to get an update for the Facebook app. In the past, Facebook has been a horrible app but since more recent versions of the app, it has been a far better experience. First, simply swiping to the left reveals your chat list and swiping right reveals the main menu. Very simple & clean; I like it! While in your chat list, you can keep your favorites at the top and easily rearrange them by tapping “edit” in the top right. Just tap the green + sign to bring them to the top and use the 3 little bars at the right of the name to rearrange. Another feature added to chat is the ability to see who’s online right now. Hidden iPad Facebook App Found, Then Blocked by Facebook, Then Re-Hacked! [Update]

Recently, someone figured out that if they changed just one little number in the code for the iPhone Facebook app, the iPad app would be revealed when installed on the iPad. You needed to be jailbroken so you could access the Facebook app files to change the code that marks the app for the iPhone or iPad. The app was a little buggy but the layout was pretty good. Nothing to blow your mind but better than the tiny little iPhone app. UPDATE: There is a hack in Cydia called FaceForward that re-enables the hack and doesn’t require the step by step hacks below! FBphotoSave – Save Photos from Facebook Application to Camera Roll

FBphotoSave is a hack that allows you save photos from the Facebook application to your Camera Roll. Normally, the stock photo saving method that allows you to tap and hold on an image to save it to your device does not work in the Facebook application however FBphotoSave enables this feature.

It’s a super simple little hack. Once installed, you can use the hack by tapping and holding on any photo in the Facebook application. When you release your hold, you will get a pop-up with the options to Cancel the save or Confirm the save. If you select Confirm it will display a little HUD saying that the photo has been saved. You can then go into your Camera Roll and view the saved image.

Today, the Facebook iPhone application received an update. The update includes the addition of Groups and Deals as well as improvements to the Places feature (see full change log below). Facebook for iPhone Update 3.1.3

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

FacebookFacebook has put out another update with some fixes to a couple things that have really been annoying me. One is video playback! You can now watch videos posted on Facebook. Another is links to photo albums now work. Before it would just give an error. Also, you can upload .png files. This helps us upload screenshots from our iPhones. Before you would just get a black screen instead of the picture. Here’s the full list of updates: [Read more…]

Facebook Update 3.1 & 3.1.1 Adds Push Notifications, Contact Syncing & Lots of Bugs

FacebookA recent update (3.1) to the Facebook app was not so great for many. Personally mine would freeze after about 10 seconds of using the app. I removed the app and reinstalled and that seems to have fixed it. The new features in this update are push notifications and contact syncing. I seemed to get push notifications fine but contact syncing failed on the first try as did for some other friends. They too had issues with the app. One person couldn’t even get the app to open but again, reinstalling the app fixed the problem. Here are some other problems people were having that I found in the App Store reviews:

aclevelandjr: Awesome app but it erased my entire Google contacts list and I can’t get them to sync back… Beware!!!!!

DMB Fan 36: I’m happy to see a walk into new frontiers, but this address book sync thing seems to miss the mark in two basic places:

1) Facebook Links are sent over the contacts labeled as the default “Homepage” not a URL field called something more user friendly like “Facebook”. (the API let’s you do this easily)

2) Contact pictures are sent in a very small resolution! A picture with a quality of at least the iPhone screen res should be used instead. Most facebook contact photos have a nice higher res picture behind them. When a phone call comes in or goes out you get a silly little postage stamp instead of a nice full screen image like pictures chosen on the phone itself.

Tigger H.: Great concept, poor execution. The new “sync” feature decided to sync random facebook users I am not even friends with to difference phone contacts of mine.. Some profile pictures are on more then one contact.. Many contacts facebooks are not even remotely close to being theirs… I just wish i did not touch that sync button….

D4VIDS: I just updated my facebook and hit the sync friends button…big mistake!!! Now my fb won’t even load and it keeps crashing. Not a very good update

Facebook iPhone App Experiencing Connection Issues (It’s Not Just You)

FacebookMy grandma has been texting me for the past couple days asking me to help her fix her Facebook iPhone App. She said it’s not refreshing her news feed and can’t see people’s walls. I told her to shake it :) (that forces the app to refresh.) It didn’t work. Then I noticed I am having the same issues. Have you been experiencing problems? Let us know in the comments. I checked out Twitter and it looks like we’re not the only ones:

Facebook App Developer Quits iPhone App

Joe Hewitt, the developer of the iPhone facebook application, has tweeted for the first time in about a month and the tweet is shocking… he has decided to quit developing the app due to Apple’s approval process.

“Time for me to try something new. I’ve handed the Facebook iPhone app off to another engineer, and I’m onto a new project.”

TechCrunch was able to get a little more info from Hewitt and this is what he had to say…

My decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple’s policies. I respect their right to manage their platform however they want, however I am philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process. I am very concerned that they are setting a horrible precedent for other software platforms, and soon gatekeepers will start infesting the lives of every software developer.

The web is still unrestricted and free, and so I am returning to my roots as a web developer. In the long term, I would like to be able to say that I helped to make the web the best mobile platform available, rather than being part of the transition to a world where every developer must go through a middleman to get their software in the hands of users.”

Facebook iPhone App Updates “Coming Soon”

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

##ICON_NAME## Joe Hewitt, the developer of the facebook App Store application, recently tweeted that the app will soon be receiving two updates. The update to version 3.03 will be bug fixes and it will be followed by version 3.1 which is said to include push notification (along with a few other nice new features).

The thing I find strange is the lack of info about version 3.1. In the past we have seen pictures, video, tweets… etc about updates. Not this time. I guess we will just have until it;s released to see all the cool new features.
