UPDATE: The original carrier file v5.0 I had was not allowing Visual Voicemail for some people. I have updated the link below to a v5.0 that allows you to edit your settings and allows both Visual Voicemail & MMS to work. See the guide below for updates. (I’ve added steps 9 & 10.)

If you want to revert back to the carrier file 4.0 (no MMS) you may download here.

MessagesOk, I’m super excited that I got this to work. I really think it has to with AT&T allowing it to work by removing the opt-out codes (the code AT&T put in to block MMS when firmware 3.0 came out). That’s why I think it took a few days for mine to work after doing what I’m about to show you. It’s really really easy. I’m running an iPhone 3GS, jailbroken, not unlocked, on firmware 3.0.1. Your iPhone does not need to be jailbroken for this to work and I have linked to the file needed for firmware 3.1. Here’s how I did it:

PC/Windows Instructions

1. Download this carrier update file (v5.0) if you are running iPhone firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1 (it might work with lower firmware but I haven’t confirmed it.) If you are on the new 3.1, download here (v5.1).
2. Close iTunes.
3. Click Start > Run > type:cmd then press enter. Run this command: “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
cmd
dos
4. Open iTunes.
5. Hold the shift key while clicking update under your iPhone in iTunes.
6. Change the file type to “iPhone Carrier Configuration files” by clicking in the the bottom right corner and switching to *.ipcc.
filetype
7. Find the file of the carrier update you just saved to your computer in step 1, select it and click open.
updating
8. You iPhone is now updated. You may have MMS right away if AT&T has removed your opt-out code but mine took a few days.
9. To allow for Visual Voicemail to work on firmware 3.0 & 3.0.1 using carrier file v5.0, go to your Settings app > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > and under Visual Voicemail change wap.cingular to acds.voicemail
IMG_0378
10. Double check your MMS settings below the Visual Voicemail settings above to match this (do not enter anything in blank fields):
APN: wap.cingular
Username:
Password:
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 066.209.011.32
MMS Max Message Size: 614400
MMS UA Prof URL:
IMG_0379

NOTE: If you are on EDGE it will take a while for the image to send. If AT&T hasn’t removed the opt-out code on your account yet, you will get a red exclamation point next to the message.

Usaa Gizmodo recently posted an interesting article saying that USAA, a privately held bank/insurance company, is allowing iPhone customers to deposit checks into their account via an App Store application. The USAA application is scheduled to have it’s first update this week. The update will add a new Check Deposit feature. The feature will allow customers to take a picture of both the front and the back of the check (with the iPhone’s built-in camera) and have the check automatically deposited into their bank account. Email Multiple Images – 3.0 Firmware

Email Multiple Images One cool new feature of the 3.0 firmware is the ability to send more than one photo or screenshot (or any image that is on your iPhone or iPod Touch) at a time via email. Encrypto – Hide Photos in Your Camera Roll

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Encrypto Encrypto is an application that allows you to hide images that are in your Camera Roll. When you open Encrypto, you will need to choose a passkey. You will want to remember your passkey because the next time you open the app, you will have to enter it.

Once in the application, you have three options on the lower menu bar; the main page, the help page and the import page. On the main page you will see all the photos from your Camera Roll. It automatically pulls in all your photos however, it will not pull in any screenshots that are in your Camera Roll. I personally like that it only pulls in photos and not screenshots. Each photo has a image of a lock on it. If you tap on the lock, it will Encrypt the photo. Read more

PhotoList Update – Facebook Integration

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

PhotoList I opened iTunes this evening and what did I see? An update to an app that I had done a review on last week. It was the PhotoList app by Raisix Inc. (click here for the review) I was interested to see what they had updated and I was hoping it wasn’t just stability issues as most updates are. But to my surprise they had added a new feature to the app…Facebook integration!! Now that is cool.

The Facebook integration allows you to do two things: Upload and Download photos to and from your personal Facebook account.

To Download
Within PhotoList, create a new folder that you want to download pics from your Facebook account. Tap on your new created folder and tap the folder icon at the bottom right of the screen. Tap “Facebook” on the “Download photo from” title and after it requests authorization, sign into your Facebook account. Once you have done this tap “Done” and start downloading from any of your Facebook photo folders. Once you have selected your photo, name it or keep the default name and give it your 1 to 5 rating (if you want), and tap “Done”. Once you are done, tap the Facebook arrow and then cancel to take you back to the PhotoList app. Read more

PhotoList – Organize Images in Folders

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

PhotoList PhotoList by Raisix Inc. has released an iPhone app that allows you to “rate your photos on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, and then sort by either rating or name when looking through photo folders.”

I really like how this app allows me to create as many folders as I want for all of my pics. Once I create a folder I can then add pics to this folder by selecting the “+” sign at the bottom left of the screen. That will bring up your Camera Roll from within the app so you don’t have to worry about closing the app to put your pics into your folder. Once you have selected your pic, you have to name it and have the option to rate it. I wish however instead of having to give a name to a photo that it would default to the actual “IMG_***” title already assigned to the photo. Minor but that way I don’t have to create a name in the case of fast filing. Read more

STICKi PICi – Enhance Your Photos

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

STIKi PICi STIKi PICi is a fun little application that allows you to enhance your photos. It is based off the concept of the Asian photo booths known as purikuria.

Once you import a photo from your Camera Roll (or take a photo) you can then add frame, stamps, writing and conversation bubbles to the photo. There are a decent amount of frames and stamps to choose from. You can choose both a inside and border color for the writing tool as well as the size of the tool. There are a variety of conversation bubbles to choose from…you can also choose the color, size and font of the text in the chat bubble. Another great feature of the application is that you can change your photo to Black and White, Sepia or Soften it…just a nice extra touch. Read more

TiltShift – Give Photos Depth of Field

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

TiltShift TiltShift is an application that allows you stimulate miniatures. “This application simulates a tilt-shift lens that tricks your mind into viewing a photo as a miniature scene like a model railroad for example.” However, it can be used for much more than just simulating miniatures…it allows you to blur parts of your photo giving you the ability to create some depth of field. You do not need to be an expert in photography, or even know what any of the above means, in order to enjoy this application. Trust me, I’m not extremely knowledgeable when it comes to photography terms and what not but, I like that I am able to bring one part of my photo into focus while leaving the rest blurred. PhotosThe Photos application’s new features mainly have to do with the way photos are shared. You can now of course send photos via MMS. Just select the photo you want and tap the little arrow in the bottom right and it gives you the option to send via MMS. Another great added feature is the option to send more than one photo via MMS or email. To do this go to one of your albums and tap the arrow again in the bottom left corner. This now gives you three options at the bottom. Share, copy, and delete. If you tap share you get the option to send via email or MMS. You can also open your email and paste the photos into an existing email, draft, reply or new email. Read more

#AiS Once again, sticking to my Safari theme, below is this week’s QuickTip. If you have a QuickTip you would like to submit you can email it to QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com

QuickTip – When in Safari, you are able to save images from a web page to your iPhone. When you are on a web page, you can tap and hold your finger on any image within that web page and save that image to your iPhone’s Camera Roll. When you hold your finger on an image, you will get a pop-up with the options to Save Image or to Cancel. You will also notice that the image has been highlighted in the web page so you know exactly what is being saved to your iPhone. When you select the Save Image option, that image is then saved to your camera roll…just go into your stock Photos application and select Camera Roll to view the image. This works with any image within a web page be it a photo, a logo, a graphic…as long as it is an image. Overall, a great feature that allows you to email, twitter, or save images for future reference. Read more

PhotosOne of the new features of the 2.0 firmware is the ability to save photos from your email and from web pages in Safari. All you have to do is hold your finger on a picture for a few seconds. A little toolbar will pop up from the bottom and give you the option to save it to your camera roll. If the image is also a link it will give you the option to visit the link. The really nice thing about this is it’s saving the original file size. So once you plug your iPhone or iPod Touch to your computer you can pull the full resolution picture off. Read more
