Purplera1n has been updated and we’re hearing of much better success from users. There’s still no support for Winterboard but I’m sure it won’t be too long. I can’t wait!
Vista, Windows 7, International, 64-bit support
Less flakiness in the payload
Cydia tar cleaned up
Improved logging with slightly more useful errors
New kernel patches, codesign errors gone. Props posixninja
Added vm_map +x, passed vm_check
No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik’s court
Still in beta, use caution
You can download Purplera1n for Windows only at purplera1n.com.

This looks pretty sweet so I had to share it. This app lets you to timelapse photography with your iPhone. The downfall here is going to be battery life. Of course I would turn off all wireless, bluetooth, dim your screen, etc to get the best battery life when running apps like this. Check out the video to see results.
Friday Night Movie Night: Worms
It’s Friday Night Movie Night again so here’s some of the top iPhone videos from YouTube uploaded over the past week. Remember the game Worms? Well it’s coming to the iPhone. Here’s a nice lone 10 minute video of real gameplay:
Jailbreak iPhone 3GS With purplera1n [Windows] *UPDATED*

Filed under iPhone 3GS, jailbreak, purplera1n
Remember George Hotz? He’s the guy(kid) that unlocked the first iPhone and traded it for a Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. Well, he’s done it again, but this time it’s a jailbreak, not an unlock. This is for the iPhone 3GS on the 3.0 firmware using Windows. I had to start the app over a few times to get it to work but I got it! If you have troubles, let us know in the comments. Here’s the link to download: purplera1n.com. So far I’ve got Qik to work! Read more

Keep your eyes on the update tab in the App Store! Facebook will be releasing an update to their iPhone app very soon! I have to admit I’m pretty excited about this. Right now, the app is very clunky not to mention the major bug of messages from groups in your inbox don’t show up. There’s lots to be excited about though. Here’s a list of upcoming features straight from the developer’s Facebook account: Read more
Firmware 3.1 Beta Brings New Features But Breaks Unlock *UPDATED*
Apple has seeded firmware 3.1 to developers and there is already info coming out on the new features. Of course, they have updated the baseband so if you want to unlock, don’t upgrade. Also, If you want to jailbreak, don’t upgrade. There is speculation that if you upgrade, you may never be able to jailbreak again. Here’s info from the Dev Team and then a list of new features.
You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title
But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.
The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.
This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.
Change the Theme on an iPhone 3GS without Jailbreaking

I know some of you are bummed that you can’t jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. Well, if you are craving a new theme, you’re in luck…Apple gave you an option. You can invert your iPhone so that it is white on black instead of black on white. Apple says it is for people who have difficulty seeing black on white or to make it easier to see at night. I say, they are secretly coming over to the dark side! If you would like to change your iPhone’s theme so that it is White on Black just head over to your stock Settings application, the General Option, the Accessibility option and you will see a White on Black feature….just turn that guy On. Metallic Glass Theme - WinterBoard Theme
| Available In: Cydia | Price: Free |
Metallic Glass Theme is a theme with transparent icons. Many of you know that I am always on the look-out for a new style of transparent icons (because you can change the wallpaper and feel like you have a whole new theme!). This theme contains a wallpaper, dock, sliders, 58 icons, loading screens, custom UI….etc.
I do have a few problems with this theme. The Message application doesn’t have an icon. There is an icon for SwirlyMMS so, you can always change it to your Message icon using ssh. And it doesn’t seem like the theme has the correct dock but, you can always use the transparent dock and it looks fine. You can get Metallic Glass Theme via the BigBoss source Read more

Since I’m not going to spend the $9.99 a month to have this feature, here’s a video I found on YouTube. I’m holding out for TomTom’s app and hoping that there’s no monthly subscription.
Friday Night Movie Night: Bye Bye Aquatica
June 26, 2009 by Douglas
Filed under App Store, Friday Night Movie Night, videos
I remember this game! Except it was called flOw. Apparently, a company called Ketara, rewrote the game from the ground up, called it Aquatica and put it in the App Store, without the permission of the original developer. They have since removed the app from the App Store and left this apology on their website:
Aquatica was an iPhone remake/fan version of the famous flOw game originally created by Jenova Chen of the ThatGameCompany fame. We deeply apologize for not properly crediting Jenova initially, and have already written him with a personal apology, as well. We also apologize to anyone we have upset and offended - please be assurred that we had no slightest intention of doing so. Our mistakes were caused by naivety, not malice, and we never meant to be disrepectful to anyone.
Because the game seemed to be upsetting so many, we have decided to remove it completely. We will also make sure nothing like this ever happens in the future - we understand our mistake, and will be working very hard to correct it and make amends.
Friday Night Movie Night: Waterproof iPhone 3GS

So I got a great idea. Let me know if you hate it or love it (vote below). Every Friday night I will post some of the best/most viewed iPhone videos on YouTube of that week. If you find any throughout the week, send them to me at video@appleiphoneschool.com. I saw this one over at iClarified.com and cnet.com. Now hopefully this is legit, but I kinda think it its. This guy drops his iPhone into a pool and it keeps working. Of course it could be like a flip video in a waterproof case, or even an iPhone waterproof case. Anyone want to test it out?
iPhone 3GS Jailbreak & Unlock Possible via 24Kpwn Exploit
Great news! It looks like the same exploit used to jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch will work on the the new iPhone 3GS. No date on when it will be released but now that we know it can be jailbroke it shouldn’t be too much longer. Here’s what the Dev Team has to say:
About 5 hours ago (Thursday evening, less than a week after the 3GS launch), we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can use the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.
This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

Griffin Clarifi Case & Macro Lens Review
June 25, 2009 by Douglas
Filed under camera, cases, iPhone Accessories
I could go on and on about this case but I’m just gonna keep it short and then show you some amazing pictures. This case is basically all about the lens. Griffin has made a slide over macro lens for the camera built into the case called Clarifi. For those who don’t know, macro means really close up. You’ll see in the pictures. Here’s what the slide over lens looks like:

The case is pretty simple and just slides onto the iPhone in two pieces. It gives you access to all your switches and buttons but if you need to clean your camera lens, you’ll have to take the case off. The top third and bottom third are covered with a grippy//rubber material. The center is a smooth plastic. I think the whole thing should be covered in the rubber material. The smooth plastic is already getting scratched. The strength of the case seems very durable and will protect your iPhone. There is also a stick on screen protector that comes in the box along with a cleaning cloth.
Of course, the other amazing thing is, the case works with the new iPhone 3GS which already has macro and autofocus. Speaking of autofocus, without it on the 3G, you have to kinda move your iPhone closer and further away until you get what you’re shooting into focus. Either iPhone you have, this case is AWESOME and sells for $30.99. And now for the proof. First with the iPhone 3G. Read more
Pro Gear Setup for iPhone 3GS Video Recording

MacBreak recently took the iPhone 3GS and hooked it up to a bunch of pro level video gear. They used a PED3 iPhone stand to mount the iPhone. Kinda crazy idea. Pretty sure they spent more on the equipment than the iPhone. Here’s the video:
