iPhone 3G S It seems the people over at iTalkiPhone have found a way to purchase an iPhone 3G S straight from the Apple Store…contract free. You obviously do not get the subsidized price of $199 and $299 however, if you are looking for a way to get the iPhone 3G S contract free, this might be a way to do it. It does taking a little bit of a work-around on Apple’s website. Here is what you would need to do:

You need Firefox + Firebug (www.getfirebug.com)

1. Go to any non-apple product in the store.apple.com (e.x: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV…mco=NjM0MTMwMw)

2. Click on the little FireBug icon on the bottom of the screen, now Firebug pops up and Click “Inspect”, and choose the “Add to cart Icon”

3. In firebug, right above where it’s highlighted, you should see “”. Click on “TV943VC/A” and change it to the value of the iPhone you want:

Code:
iPhone 3G 8GB ($499): MB046LL/A
iPhone 3GS 16GB Black ($599): MB715LL/A
iPhone 3GS 16GB White ($599): MB716LL/A
iPhone 3GS 32GB Black ($699): MB717LL/A
iPhone 3GS 32GB White ($699): MB718LL/A

4. Now click on the Add to Cart button, and the iPhone should be in your cart. Proceed to buy it if you want.

I personally have not tried this, I have an AT&T contract I am going to upgrade through, so I have no idea if it actually works or not. You might end up with an iPhone that is locked and can only be activated through a carrier or you might not receive it at all or an iPhone 3G S will show up on your doorstep ready to go with no contract….who knows! Let us know in the comments if you are one of the brave enough to give it a shot.

Check out the forum thread HERE. It contains screenshots of the process as well.

Hey Doug with your iPhone on 3.0 do you notise that the battery level is going down very quickly? Because with mine on 3.0 it does. I watched 3 youtube videos and the battery level went down by 15%. i left it in stanby over night and the battery was drained by 25% the next morning. How am I supposed to get the 5 hours of internet use claimed by Apple? Or is it because I have wifi, 3G and push turned on all the time?

Well, it sounds great, but let’s analyze something… Firebug do changes the HTML code on every page you tell it to do it, but I may guess it only modifies it on your browser… Do you think it would be that easy to modify apple’s store??? What you are doing by modifying the product code is only changing the displying product on the shopping cart, but the script that purchase it is not been changed at all, so if you select, for example, an iPod shuffle, then change the HTML stuff with firebug, you’ll see that you are buying a 32GB iPhone, but what you’re really buying is an iPod shuffle… This is my humble opinion, it might be wrong…

Did you guys receive the email confirmation after you’ve placed the order? I placed my order too, but I have not received any email confirmation. I called Apple and they said all iphone orders are being on hold for ATT eligibility verification :( . So I don’t know what would happen on June 19th.

Apple sells the 3gS at “no commitment: pricing for $599 and $699 to anyone without a 2 year contract. It means you can go to AT&T and activate on a month to month basis. The phone is not activated when you receive it. From what I can tell, you are doing all that just to get what you can get in any Apple store…….??????????

if you happen to be on oahu, go to chinatown. go from waikiki, down hotel (once in chinatown) and turn left one block past smith. across from “skippy’s” (24 hr convience store) is a little (unlisted in phone book) store called hawaii wireless. they’ll sell you a new phone–but prepwnd. full price. box and all. you can get a tmo contract too. (this is how my friend and i bought 2 phones each).

why not just buy with contract and then cancel your contract and pay the 200 (199+200=399, etc)? wouldnt that work?

    [Reply]

  19. Jakookie on July 30th, 2009 2:48 pm:

Dave, if you cancel in the first month you have to return the phone, and if you cancel after the 1st month then you’d have to pay for 2 months of voice & data service and don’t forget the activation fee. so you’re pretty much looking at the same price.
