Element – Lock Screen Mod Coming Soon

element Element is a lock screen mod that began as a concept and has turned into the real thing. Since it began as a concept back in September, there hasn’t been much to tell, but it seems that that one and only Jay Freeman (better known as saurik) is helping to make this thing happen. So, it’s time to get the information rolling. According to a recent tweet (see below), a beta of the lock screen mod will hit Cydia next week.

“Our iPhone lockscreen will be called Element. Fingers are crossed for a beta next week.” – via @gteehan

I don’t know about you guys but, I would love to have the perfect lock screen mod! I’m currently using LockInfo and like it. I can’t wait to check out Element… it looks like it is going to be pretty sweet.

Below is some info about the mod via the dev’s blog.

It seems the screens we shared of an alternative home screen for the iPhone created some buzz. We had no intention of taking it any further than a blog post but we figured this was something worth seeing through.

We got in touch with Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik. He’s the guy behind Cydia, an application for jailbroken iPhones that allows you to browse and download apps outside of actual app store. He’s crazy smart, passionate and geeky — three things we love here at T+L. Jay is going to be instrumental in making this happen.

If you haven’t already figured it out, getting this on your phone will require you to jailbreak it. That may not be an appealing option for many, but for the 2 million plus out there who have already done it and for those that are comfortable with doing it, this can be a reality.

The app and the underlying technology to make it happen are still in development so what comes out the other side will differ from what we originally proposed. The biggest change will initially be that it will render only on the lock screen. We went down this road for a number of reasons, primarily because of its relative ease of implementation, though there’s nothing easy about it. Jay is creating a framework to write custom lock screens called Cydget. Our concept will act as the guinea pig.

No word on an actual release date yet due to a last minute crash bug, but from what we hear it’s not far off. We’ll make an official announcement once it’s available. You can follow @teehanlax @gteehan and @saurik if you’re looking for more detail since we tend to tweet about this stuff more frequently than we blog about it.

  1. This app will be worth the price of the overpriced lockinfo. When it is out get it.

  2. I’m currently using the 14 day trial of LockInfo and had every intention of purchasing it when the trial is up, it’s a great app. But now that Element is coming and is being developed by Jay, I can’t help but think that I should wait, Element looks to be easily as nice, if not better that LockInfo.

  3. It’s so insane Apple designed such a totally useless lock screen and then, to add insult to injury, prevented developers from accessing it via the officially-supported SDK. Can’t figure out what the security (or other reason) is for doing this. It certainly doesn’t duplicate any built-in apps..

  4. I haven’t heard from Jay in a few days as I know he’s been working on a number of other things. I really wish I could share more, but I just don’t know much at this point. Fingers still crossed for a beta next week but there are no promises. The one thing that makes me (and hopefully you guys) patient for this is that I know Jay will make this thing rock-solid.

  5. i love when devs sneak 420 references in their apps and concepts! hehe

  6. If it’s under $5 I’ll definitely buy it.

  7. if this is going to look as good as the screenshots and will provide the features displayed i’m sold. and i would pay more than $5 for this…

Doggone it. I just bought intelliscreen too…

  9. This finally looks like competition for intelliscreen. I tried lockInfo, but it just looks too ugly for me. Intelliscreen may have it’s problems for some ( not for me ) but it looks beautiful, and that’s part of why I like the iphone. Elements looks great, though, and if saurik is involved, it’s going to be great.

  10. I’ve been using intelliscreen and love it. With Saurik in the game I look forward to some awesome innovation from both apps. Can’t wait.

  11. I have read up on this and it seems to be a very intelligent design! I am looking forward to seeing it on the front of my iPod Touch! From reading up on twitter, i have heard it is supposed to come out early next week. Im guessing monday or tuesday!

    • This looks awesome! I can’t wait for this and SmartScreen and does anyone know when smartscreen comes out.

  12. I’m looking forward for this. So far it looks pretty awesome. I hope it’ll be free unlike intelliscreen..
    Good luck on the project!

  13. Does any1 think this is gunna be free?

  14. This is actually a lock screen thing that I’m looking forward to installing upon release. I know for a fact that it’s not gonna be free. I am more than happy to pay for Jay’s and the rest of the cast’s hard work. And today I just noticed something about the screen shots provided here. Did anyone notice that the time on the screenshot reads 4:20? I thought that was kinda interestingly amusing.

  15. And why in the world should it be free? Shouldn’t a developer’s time be worth something?

  16. dsab
Seeing as to how there is a missed call at 4:19 sometimes the time, 4:20 is just the time….

  17. Are you sure that this feature is for a “lockscreen”? Because it’s actually for a “homescreen” itself. Lockscreen and homescreen both is totally different. Lockscreen is where you see along with “slide to unlock” screen and is actually locked, and homescreen is where you have access to any apps right after you “unlock” your lockscreen.

  18. oi~

what’s the word on this ?

  19. Hope it can show upcomig birthday’s from contacts, like In Kate.

  20. misterspectacular says

Things like this make me so glad my phone is jailbroken…

  21. It is going to be a lockscreen, not a homescreen. it was originally just a design exercise, but there was so much positive response we wanted to build it, for now the most realistic option is a lockscreen for jailbroken phones. The images you’ve seen so far are still based on the proof of concept homescreen. Yes, it will be a paid app, no price details yet but it’ll be inline with others like it. As for release, it’s awfully tough to for us to know when it’ll be available since Jay Freeman is building it. He’s a busy guy working on a ton of different stuff.

  22. I cant wait. Had the trial for lockinfo, hope Element will be the same or better.
Huryy up to release ; )

  23. Element looks cool but lockinfo cracked version works GREAT. I have NOT a complaint. And if Element can be better than I go further to jailbreak heaven that I already am.

  24. Sweet! This app looks brilliant…I’m looking forward to installing :) November has been and gone now, any closer to a release date?? I’m missing the lockscreen apps from my NON-jailbroken 3gs :(

  25. The onle reason for me not buying an iphone is the lack of an informational homescreen. Now this looks brilliant. If the real thing only slightly resembles the picture above, then I’m buying an iphone immediately!

    Great stuff! Keep me informed!

  26. So is this lockscreen app almost ready? i’m dying for something like this!!! this one looks top notch and matches the iphone’s look to a tee!!!

    hurry up!!! ;)

  27. Any update on this? “Next week” came and went… The year is winding down! :-)

  28. Be patient everyone…

As of December 9th, he had everything except Weather and SMS working. It’s in process, but we just have to wait.

  29. This has already been duplicated for lockinfo. it works for both lock and home screens.

  30. Do we even know what we are waiting for? How is it diff than intelliscreen? How is it diff than lockinfo? What more will we able to do than either of them now?

  31. Coming soon??? I guess “soon” is a relative term. If I were a mosquito or a gnat, I would have died while waiting for this to be released. When I was a little girl, I asked my Dad when we were going to go on a vacation to Disney. He said, “soon.” I’m 26-years-old. I’m still waiting.

  32. @gteehan says Element wont be done till at least new years at this point.

  33. Craig Taylor says

New Years? Fine with me … latest screenshots lot great!!!

  34. Hmm…is this vaporware? This has been “coming soon” for quite a while now. As much as I love Intelliscreen, this definitely looks drool-worthy!

  35. Hope, it can show birthday enteries from contanct like in kate.

  36. hope it will launch into SMS & email from LS like intelliscreen(love that!). i liked the font size of intelliscreen too. i like the totally clear ui in intelliscreen too. oh pooh, guess i’ll go back to intelliscreen:/ although it was defended earlier…probably shouldn’t show the 4:20 in the future, not workin’ for ya at the moment…XD

  37. Any word on the release date or something.. Keep checking cydia and I dont see anything…

  38. Looks finished to me.
there will always be people that feel not happy.. but it’s ok for me..
Needs Lockinfo, hide clock and weathericon plugin + weathericon.
supports other plugins: Twitter, PUSH, Apigo TODO

  39. Ruoff Norbert says

Hi did anyone know if the Elements Lockscreen is canceled or is it Work in Progress.
    Greetings NOb

  40. yeah, watsup? (even the phantom console kept us updated regularly:/…)

  41. dude if you released this right now, i bet i’d not be the only one happy to have something to be excited about after the the iPooh tablet fail.

  42. I’ve only got a few days on my Lockinfo trial… I wish somebody would give us some reassuring updates about this project before I have to commit my money…anybody…

  43. Lockinfo 2.0 updates! you should try it now. rss feeds and email check from lockscreen now comparable to intelliscreen. i like the ui of intelliscreen but my license expired so i’m using Lockinfo, its great!

  44. comsphere says

Please… please… please… make it real, I want it badly, I think Element is the best lockinfo I’ve seen.

  45. Shinobi71 says

    It’s out now

  46. Installed Element and all I have to say is WOW. I love having all of my info right from the lock screen. It’s clean, fast and stable.
