MadLibs – Complete Mad Libs on your iPhone or iPod Touch

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

MadLibsMadLibs is an application that is exactly that…Mad Libs on your iPhone and/or iPod Touch. The object of the application is to fill out a “list of words to substitute for blanks in a story; these word substitutions have a humorous effect when the resulting story is then read aloud.” I have actually had this application on my iPhone since it’s first released however, the first release had a poor interface and was buggy so, I did not write a review of it. Well, the app was recently updated and is working much better.

When you open the application, you will get the main screen where you have a few options; View Completed MadLibs, Submit New MadLibs, Download New MadLibs, Select MadLibs to Play and Play Random MadLibs. The View Completed MadLibs will display a list of the Mad Libs that you have finished including the title of the Mad Lib and the date and time it was completed. You can then select one to view it. The Submit New MadLib option allows you to submit your own Mad Lib from within the application. The Download New MadLibs is how you get more Mad Libs…when selected, you are given the option to see if there are any updated Mad Libs that can be downloaded and added to the app. Select MadLibs to Play is where you can select from the list of available Mad Libs or you can choose to have the app select a random Mad Lib for you to complete. FreeRice – Improve Vocabulary While Donating Rice

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Free Rice FreeRice is an application that works in conjunction with FreeRice.com a website dedicated to providing rice for people around the world. To be honest, I was skeptical of both the application and the website but, after a little research it seems to be legit.

The point of the application (and the website) it to increase vocabulary while donating rice to feed hungry people. Each question you get right…10 grains of rice are donated. When you open the application, you will see a question and four possible answers. To choose an answer, just tap on it. You can also have the word read out loud by selecting the speaker icon next to the question. Once you have selected your answer, you will be told whether or not you got it correct, how many grains of rice you have donated, what level you are on and you will be given a new question.

Math Mania – Test Your Math Skills

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Math Mania How fitting that my 10th review for the “School” is a math game? If you’ll recall, it was just over 3 weeks ago that I submitted my first iPhone app review of Math Sticker, a simple game that tested one’s math reasoning skills. Well, here we go again with a math game, this time a rapid-fire touch app involving simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems.

Overview
The game is simple: identify as many math problems as correct or incorrect in either 30 or 60 seconds. You can choose what types of problems are allowed (addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, powers), how long the game is (30 or 60 sec), and whether to have sound on. From the main menu, you can also view your personal stats as well as connect to PumpkinPulse.com to view the high scores of everyone (all 10 of us) playing Math Mania. [Read more…]

Online Chess – Play Opponents Online

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Online Chess I’ve always liked chess. I have a recollection of getting my butt whooped by Chessmaster 3000 on the computer. I’d play from time to time with a friend from school, and I really liked the movie “Searching for Bobby Fischer”. Thus, I was eager to give Online Chess a chance to get me going again with chess and with my first chess app on the iPhone.

Overview
With Online Chess, there is no computer opponent. It’s strictly you versus someone on the other side of the information superhighway. Online Chess connects to the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS), which boasts over 300,000 registered users and over 1,000 players online at any moment. The fastest way to start playing chess is to setup a quick pickup game. From here, you can determine the amount of time on the clock and how many seconds are added to your time on each move. You also get to determine starting color and whether you want to play a rated or unrated game. Once another player has accepted your challenge, you’re immediately sent to the game board. Other game options include issuing and accepting specific challenges from other available players online. [Read more…]

MiZoo – iZoo Clone…Similar to Bejeweled

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

MiZoo Guys, I cannot even tell you how stoked I was when Lazrhog wrote me a few days ago and told me that MiZoo would be coming to the App Store! iZoo (also developed by Lazrhog) was like one of my all time favorite apps from back in the 1.1.4 and below jailbreak days (ohhh…the good ol’ days!). So, as you can image I was very excited to test this one out.

When you open MiZoo, you get the main menu with the options; New Game, Settings and Worldwide Scores. In the Settings, you have the option to enter the name in which you will use in the Worldwide High Score table. The Worldwide Scores option will bring you to a high score table (which opens right in the app). To begin playing, select New Game. [Read more…]

Oobits – Strategy Game

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

OobitsI have to make an upfront confession before reviewing this app. I have a direct connection to the developer. It’s is my co-worker’s nephew. So there, now it’s out, I can continue with the review :)

Oobits is kinda like Bejeweled. I’m sure the developer hates me saying that but that’s what you think when you see a screenshot of it. I was thinking that exact thing when my friend told me about the app. But, I tried it out and got addicted right away. The game is different in that you drag an entire 5 cross group of oobits around to make rows of color. It may sound easy but there are 6 different colors, rainbow oobits that can act as any color, rock oobits that have to be used twice before disappearing, and 3 different game modes including a multiplayer option. You also can’t overlap the area you’re moving the group of oobits from. See the video to see what I mean and watch for the bombs! They are your friend! [Read more…]

Lights Off Development Finished, Coming to App Store Soon

Coming Soon: App Store       Price: Unknown

Lights OffThe developer has announced he is finished with the development of Lights Off and it should be in the App Store very soon. He’s launched a website (www.lightsoffapp.com) to promote the app and there’s even an iPhone version of the site. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as it is out!

Lights off is a strategy game that was one of the first games ever in the jailbreak community. The object of this game is to get all of the lights to go off. When you click on a box it affects the four boxes around it. When you get all the lights to go off, or “win,” it takes you to the next stage. See our original review of Lights Off for more info.

Update: You should also check out this post from the current developer of Lights Off about how he took over the development for Lights Off for the App Store after the original developer was hired by Apple.

Sneezies – Bubble Popping Fun

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

SneeziesAs a high school teacher, I often have to write college recommendations for my students. One of the most often used questions on these forms is: “What three words would you use to describe this student?” This is the same question I asked myself prior to writing about the iPhone app game “Sneezies”. My response would have been “simple”, “cute”, and “colorful”.

Overview
The game is best described in the four-step flowchart shown in the screen shot below. You touch the screen to drop some mysterious “sneezing powder”. You make the little bubble guy sneeze and he gets freed from his bubble, and helps you get closer to the target number that you have to free. There are two modes, classic and challenge. In the classic mode, you progress to higher levels by meeting a target number of bubble people freed. The challenge mode is similar, but you usually have higher target numbers, bonus points are available, and you often get multiple doses of the sneezing powder. [Read more…]

Big2 Poker – Card Game Similar to Big 2 or Cheat

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

Big2 Poker I’ve never been much of a card game player. From time to time, I’ll break out the Bicycle decks for some Texas Hold’em at home with friends. On the computer, I’ll play Solitaire, maybe Hearts on occasion. I think I tried Bridge once, but that adventure ended quickly. However, one card game does come to mind that I often enjoyed. It was called “BS” in college and another version that I often played with my family was called “Rich Man, Poor Man”. Apparently, this game is referred to as “Big 2” in Asia, and the developers of “Big2Poker” claim that it is one of the more popular games overseas. Honestly, my first thought when seeing the name “Big 2 Poker”, was that this was just going to be another form of Texas Hold’em or another version of an online poker game. Thankfully, I was wrong.
