iPhone 3G Available for At Home Activation?

The iPhone rumor mill is hot with a rumor that AT&T is now allowing for at home activation of the iPhone 3G. It seems that AT&T is now allowing the purchase of the 3G iPhone online and then instead of going to an AT&T store to activate it, you are able to activate it via iTunes. Now, I have read quite a few article about this rumor and have done some research on AT&T’s website (as well as talked to a AT&T rep – see below). Every article I have read says that it is an “unconfirmed” report BG has the most convincing report saying,

“While we haven’t spoken to any of our ninjas to confirm this yet, we did speak to three customer service reps as well as someone in the office of the President – each confirming that at-home activation is a go.”

I have updated the information for this article (see Update section), it seems that it is definitely an iTunes activation process….please read below. [Read more…]

Free WiFi at AT&T Hotspots Including Starbucks!

AT&T Rumor has it that people have been getting text messages from AT&T saying that their iPhone has free WiFi access at AT&T hotspots…including Starbucks. Well, this morning both Doug and I received that exact text message. If you click on the link in the text message you get a webpage with more info (see screenshots below). At the bottom of the webpage there is another link titled, “Get started with AT&T WiFi.” When selected, it gives you exact instructions on how to connect to the WiFi. So, we decided to check it out.

What You Will Need To Purchase An iPhone 3G

iPhone 3G According to Apple’s website, there are a few things you are going to need to bring with you when you go to purchase your new iPhone 3G. The list is slightly disturbing at best. I remember the good old days when Doug handed the the guy $300 cash and walked out with a 4GB iPhone. Not anymore! Be sure to read the list carefully and make sure you have everything you need. Nothing would be more heartbreaking then getting up to the counter with your iPhone 3G in hand only to realize you need a credit card in order to purchase it! The list applies to purchasing an iPhone at both an AT&T or Apple store.

To purchase and activate iPhone 3G, you need the following:

    • Credit card
    • Social security number
    • Valid government-issued photo ID
    • Current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)

3G iPhones Arrive at AT&T Stores

The following video shows iPhones arriving at an AT&T store. Notice white iPhones come in a white box.

Apple Stores Open at 8:00am for iPhone 3G Launch

AppleWe’ve known for a little while that AT&T Stores will be open at 8:00am local time on July 11th for the launch of the iPhone 3G but now Apple has released info stating they will also open at 8:00am. If you visit Apple’s Retail site at www.apple.com/retail you will see the info we snagged in the screenshot above. We will be at our local Apple Store pretty early that day to be there for the opening. If you’re not in the US let me know what time your service provider is opening. If you can get a link confirming this we’ll post it in this article.

There are screenshots (not so nice ones) and news that the iPhone 3G will have MMS or multimedia messaging. This means picture text messaging or video messaging. There is also news that AT&T is prepping MMS service for the iPhone.

Upgrade to iPhone 3G for free if you purchased your iPhone after May 27th!

iPhone 3GAccording to Gizmodo….it has been confirmed that AT&T is going to allow customers who purchased an iPhone after May 27th to upgrade from the iPhone to the iPhone 3G for no extra cost. Which is pretty cool! As for the rest of us, we will have to sign a new 2-year contract in order to get our iPhone 3G’s!

Jailbreaking iPhone 3G

My mind can’t help but dream of the future of the iPhone 3G. I know that it will get jailbroke and unlocked, but how? With AT&T requiring you to activate in the store or Apple store how will pwnage or winpwn work? It restores your iPhone using custom hacked firmware through iTunes which then iTunes activated the iPhone. If this activation process is no longer done in iTunes, how will jailbreaking occur? I know previous methods such as jailbreakme.com used Safari exploits to gain write access and add Installer.app without needing to restore and reactivate. [Read more…]

iPhone 3G Requires 2 Year Contract, In Store Activation

AT&TApple and AT&T have learned their lesson. They have a plan on keeping people from unlocking the iPhone: require a 2 year contract and activate the iPhone in the store only. No more activation through iTunes. This means you can’t walk into the Apple Store, buy an iPhone, go home and unlock it to T-Mobile or whoever. You also can’t buy them online from AT&T’s website or Apple.com. This might not matter as much because many countries will be getting the iPhone 3G, but for those that won’t, it’s going to be pretty hard to get one. I assume this will be the same for most carriers throughout the world. One way might be through the few countries who do not allow carriers to lock phones but then the price will surely go up. This memo to AT&T stores explains it all: [Read more…]

Where are the Refurbished iPhones?

This is an interesting story sent to us by one of our viewers. It is about a gentleman (David) who ordered a refurbished iPhone through AT&T and received a bag…yep, that’s it, nothing but the bag. The only reason this concerns me is because I know a few of you bought refurbished iPhone’s from AT&T during the last sale. Below is a just snippit from David’s blog.

I am a developer for Pegasus News. My team has been working on an application for the iPhone and was in need of hardware for testing, so when my brother mentioned that AT&T had refurbished iPhones on their site, I jumped on the deal knowing that stock at all local Apple stores was nonexistent. I place my order, everything goes through just fine, I’m a happy customer. I try to pull up my order status on AT&T’s site and get an error message telling that it might take 24 hours for information to be available in their system. This seems like a common enough requirement, so I wait patiently.

ONE WEEK AND FOUR BLOG POSTS LATER… [Read more…]
