Recent App Store Deals

AppStore Below are some of the applications that went on sale today. Asphalt 4 went from $9.99 to $7.99. You can check out a review of Asphalt 4 HERE. The rest of the applications were paid apps that are now free.

Note: Many of the apps below are only free for a limited time (I forgot to mention that last night). Also, I spent A TON of time going through all the ones that went on sale to pick only the best of them so hopefully that helps you from having to do it yourself. Finally, we are having a few issues with our links…we should have that fixed soon and the link will bring you directly to the app instead of just into iTunes. The links should be working properly now!

i.TV

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

i.TV This application is not a new one however, it is not one that we have done a review of in the past. i.TV recently got a very nice update so I decided to check it out. I was rather impressed with the application and thought I would pass it along.

When you open i.TV, you will see a lower menu bar with the options; TV, Theaters, My Media, Search and More. The TV tab is basically a TV guide like grid showing TV listings. Tapping on a listing will take you to more details about the show which includes a bunch of things like a picture gallery, show credits, reviews, and other upcoming showings. You can also tap watch at the top which allows you to set a reminder to watch the show or search Netflix and then you can add it to your Netflix Queue. There is also a thumbs up or thumbs down button in the top right corner which manages content in your “My Media” tab at the bottom. [Read more…]

New Themes for WinterBoard

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard Below are some unique themes I found recently in Cydia. The first, Contemporary Baroque (via modmyi) is a simple and clean black and white theme. It contains only the basic icons but, if you are only looking to mod your first page…this theme will do that. The second theme, Glasklart (via modmyi) is another option for clear icons. I personally love clear icons! I can change my wallpaper every day or so and feel like I have a whole new theme. The third theme, SnowFlake Gilles (via modmyi) is one to get you into the Holiday spirit. There is a little too much going on for me and I had to take off the background image. But, if you are feeling festive…you might want to check out this theme. All of these themes are used via WinterBoard. Screenshots below. [Read more…]

MailSearch 1.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

MailSearchI actually tested this application yesterday but, had some issues with it crashing back to the SpringBoard so, I was happy to see an update for it this morning. MailSearch is a simple application that allows you to quickly search through your email. The nice thing about this application is that it searches through all your email accounts. When you open MailSearch, you will get the main search page where you can enter any keyword or phrase.

Once you have entered what you would like to search for, select Search. You will then get a list of relevant findings from any of the email accounts you have set up on your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can then select an email to see the full email content. However, it only gives you the basic text of the email and doesn’t work well with emails that have a lot of graphics. But, the word or phrase that you searched for will be highlighted within the email so that is nice. That is basically where the functionality stops. [Read more…]

Snow Report 1.0

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Snow ReportThe title of this application caught my attention though, I love to ski and snowboard so I might be slightly bias! :) Colorado Snow Report is an application that displays the Colorado Snow Reports. When you first open the app you will only get information for a few resorts. However, if you select View All, you will get a much larger list. You can then select the Edit button in the upper left corner and rearrange the list or delete resorts off the list.

Now, the information the application gives you on the main list is the resort name and the amount of snow they have had in the past 24 hours. If you select a resort you will get a lot more information about the resort such as a live webcam, how much snow they have had in the last 48 hours, the base depth, whether the resort is open or closed, the ability to view a detailed snow report, ability to call the resort and the ability to go to the resorts website!! So very very cool! Also, when on the main list of resorts…the resorts that are darker are the ones that are open.

Ocarina – A Musical Application

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

Ocarina Another very cool application that has been released in the last week is Ocarina. When I first saw this application I was totally skeptical. But, turns out that it is not only real but very cool!! Ocarina is a musical instrument that can actually detect your breath (similar to a flute or recorder)! It uses the microphone to detect breath and then uses the iPhone’s touch screen to play different notes. Not only that but it uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to affect vibrato! It is really cool.

Another thing that makes this application unique is that it is also a social application. “Tap on the globe icon and you will see and hear other Ocarina players throughout the world. The globe view will highlight the source of the music. Rate your favorite performances so that others may benefit from your judgment. Name your Ocarina if you want listeners around the world to identify your performances.” Their website has a ton of pointers and tips…including information on how to play certain notes and scores! You can check it out HERE. [Read more…]

Skrew Common and vWallpaper/vRingtones

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

VWallpaper Well, it seems that while I was traveling, we finally got one of the apps that many of you have been waiting for…vWallpaper/vRingtones. I gave the app a try and it seems to work great! One new feature in the vWallpaper section is that you can now add a picture mask to your wallpaper. The video wallpaper will then show behind the picture mask. Another feature that I really like is the ability to preview the wallpapers and picture masks before setting them. The only thing it needs now is the ablity to view a vWallpaper before you download it. That would be nice!

The vRingtones part of the application works well too. For some reason these apps seem to run a lot smoother now. When I had them on version 1.1.4 and below they were always a little sketchy but, they seem to work great on firmware 2.0 and above.

New Poll – Do you use your iPhone or iPod Touch while driving?

AiS Time for a new poll. The last poll was – What type of connection do you use most often on your iPhone (or iPod Touch)? Below are the results based on when we added the poll just under two weeks ago.

* WiFi (61%, 1,441 Votes)
* 3G (17%, 390 Votes)
* Edge (11%, 263 Votes)
* I don’t have a choice…I have an iPod Touch! :) (11%, 264 Votes)
Total Voters: 2,357

I’m totally with the majority on this one! I am almost always on WiFi when I am using my iPhone. Now, that might change once we get 3G (which is supposed to be in the next few weeks!! YAY!!). You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well.

I spent all last week traveling. However usually when I travel Doug drives and I ride but, Doug wasn’t with this time so I was doing all the driving! It made me think of this next poll!

Do you use your iPhone or iPod Touch while driving (pick the answer that best applies)?

Voxie – Voice Recording

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

VoxieVoxie is a very nice, smooth voice recording application. Some of the better features are organization of recordings and the ability to email the recordings to anyone in your contact list. It sends in and .aif format that the iPhone can read. There are a lot of options in the “Settings” tab which make the app very customizable. You can easily see details like date, time, length and file size and there’s even a visualizer showing what the recording “looks” like. If all of this seems confusing or complicated you can just tap on the “Express” tab and just one tap or a shake starts the recording. One more tap saves it and it becomes ready to record again with just another tap. [Read more…]

Proxy Pal

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Proxy PalFirst, if you don’t know what a proxy is, check out this article on Wikipedia. Basically it’s a way to get to websites that are blocked by your work or school. Some businesses block things like eBay, Facebook or MySpace to keep you more productive. You just visit the proxy website and then enter the web address you’d like to visit. Some businesses and schools catch on the the proxy sites and block them too so this application helps you find the best proxies and also share yours. [Read more…]

Wings (Flight Simulator)

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

WingsWings is a very simple flight simulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch. When you first open the app there are 4 icons in the corners and 4 icons that represent the 4 seasons across the bottom center. The icon in the top left tells you the developer’s name, Bottle Rocket. The bottom left is a little speaker that controls the audio track being played or allows you to stop the music. Most of the music is calm and relaxing. The top right is an info screen that shows you a menu choices of Other Apps, Feedback, Share and Help. Finally, in the bottom right, you can choose from floating or flying. Flying is a quicker responding options where floating is slower. [Read more…]

Hacked iPhone Keyboard

YouTubeI found this video on modmyi.com of a physical keyboard attached to an iPhone. It’s pretty kewl but I would prefer something like a bluetooth hack so I could hook up a full size keyboard if I wanted. What do you think? Would you use this?
