Trism Developer Doing Very Well via the App Store

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

Trism I just read a story on CNN Tech about the developer of Trism. It was an excellent story that really captured the opportunity that the App Store offers. Many of you may feel as connected to this story as I do. If you have been around the jailbreak scene for long, you will remember that Trism first came out as a jailbroken application. Even in it’s first release it was a game worth talking about! We saw it go through a few updates and once the App Store arrived, we saw it merge into the App Store. The game has always been well developed and a fair price ($4.99 – as both a jailbroke and App Store app. Though, it is currently available for $2.99). The CNN story talks about the developer’s success in the App Store.

New Poll – How many pages do you use for organizing applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch?

AiS Time for a new poll. The last poll was – Do you use your iPhone or iPod Touch while driving (pick the answer that best applies)? Below are the results based on when we added the poll a week ago.

* No Way…that is totally dangerous! (18%, 182 Votes)
* Nope because it is illegal where I live. (10%, 106 Votes)
* Yes, but mostly to make/receive calls. (40%, 421 Votes)
* Yep, how else am I going to keep up on my text messages! (15%, 159 Votes)
* Totally…driving is the best time to get on the web! (6%, 64 Votes)
* Yes, when else would I use all my applications?? (10%, 108 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,040

I’m not sure I should admit this or not but, I totally use my iPhone on long trips!! Mostly to get on the web or check Twitter. Doug uses his iPhone basically anytime he is awake so, good thing it is not illegal to use a cell phone while driving where we live. I also just noticed that there were a few spelling errors in the last poll….sorry about that!! You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well. Below is the new poll.

Google Mobile App Update Adds Voice Search

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

Google Mobile AppThe update eveyone’s been waiting for is finally here! Google has release the update to Google Mobile App that includes voice search. On the iPhone, it uses the built in proximity sensor to begin recording when you hold the iPhone up to you ear. It will beep when the recording begins and when you stop talking or pull the iPhone away from your ear it stops. It then sends the recording to Google’s servers where it does the processing. Then it sends back search results, some which will launch the phone or maps applications. You can also tap the magnifying glass to the left of the search bar to change your search from iPhone & Web to Maps, Images, News, Shopping or Wikipedia. I haven’t tested the voice search in the car where there’s background noise but inside where it’s quite it’s working great.

At the bottom center of the app there is an Apps button. It takes you to a list of Google’s services, most formatted to the iPhone that open in Safari. There’s a long list that includes: Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Talk, Reader (my favorite), GOOG-411, News, Notebook, Photos, orkut, Translate, Maps, YouTube & Earth. You can also avail translate subtitle  for your translation works. You can even edit their order by tapping the edit button in the top right corner and dragging them around. My Little Tank

Available In: App Store       Price: $4.99

My Little TankAt $4.99, My Little Tank is a little expensive but still a fun and challenging game. There lots of customizable settings, you can control with the accelerometer or touch screen, and there’s 80 levels. You basically drive the tank around and it automatically shoots for you and you just aim at the bad guys. Some times you go on the attack while other times you defend your home base. It gets harder than I thought and both the touch screen controls and the accelerometer work well. Not only do you attack other tanks and bases but there are bonus items to grab that will give you better weapons, speed or freeze the enemy. Here’s a video from the developer to show a little more detail of the game: [Read more…]

MCallShow 1.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free 15 Day Trial – $4.99

MCallShow There has been another release for MCallShow. I tend to keep an eye on the updates for this application because in the past it has never worked quite right for me so, I like to check out the updates to see if things have improved. MCallShow is an application which gives you more detailed location based information about incoming and outgoing calls. It seems that the user interface has not drastically changed however, the database for the application has changed. It used to be when you opened the app, it would automatically find your local Country. Now it seems that you need to actually install the database for your Country. The current Country databases include, Australia, China, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain and Thailand. There website says that there is also a database for the USA/Canada but, I did not see that is Cydia. [Read more…]

SBSettings 1.0.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

SBSettings There is an update to SBSettings today. If you remember my initial review of SBSettings, you will remember that this application is pretty much supposed to be a BossPrefs replacement app. Well, I actually use SBSettings quite often and thought that the update was worth writing about. The “coolest” part of the update is that SBSettings is now themable! It now comes with the stock theme and two additional themes (HUD and Tech Shadow). You can get to the themes through the More option. I also noticed that there were quite a few additional mods for SBSettings in Cydia (which I just might have to do a post about).

Twitter Search – search.twitter.com

Twitter’s search site, formerly owned by Summize, is something I use everyday to keep up on the latest Twitter trends. It’s really simple. You visit search.twitter.com on your iPhone or iPod touch. You type in your search term and tap search. There’s also an advanced search with more features. At the very bottom of the page there is a list of trending topics. [Read more…]

Weather Underground – i.wund.com

I’ve used this web app forever and have never written about it so I thought I’d share it with you if you haven’t heard of it. I think it’s the best weather app I’ve seen so far. I’m biased because I use Weather Underground’s full site on my computer. Weather Underground for the iPhone is easy to get to, just go to i.wund.com.

Once there you can type in a city or zip in the search box and find your city. [Read more…]

Tweetsville 1.0

Available In: App Store       Price: $3.99

TweetsvilleTweetsville is another Twitter app from the developers of Twinkle. Some have asked why create another Twitter app instead of add features to Twinkle. If you don’t already know, Twinkle isn’t just a Twitter client. It is it’s own messaging system built on Tapulous’ system. It also requires a Tapulous login where Tweetsville doesn’t. Tweetsville also costs $3.99 and Twinkle is free. Tweetsville seems to be built for exactly what users were asking for in a Twitter client. [Read more…]

Backgrounds

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

Backgrounds Backgrounds is the number one free application right now in the App Store. So, I decided to see what all the fuss was about! Backgrounds is an application that allows you to easily look through wallpapers and add them your iPhone or iPod Touch.

When you open Backgrounds, you will see a upper menu bar with three options; Popular, Recent and Category. The Popular option will display the most popular wallpapers, the Recent option will display recently added wallpaper and the Category option will give you a list of categories for the wallpapers. You can scroll through the wallpapers by using the arrow at the bottom of the page. Once you have found a wallpaper that you like, select it. This will open a page with that wallpaper. From there you can save the wallpaper to your iPhone or iPod Touch or you can report the wallpaper. If you select Save, you will get a pop-up saying that the wallpaper has been saved…if you select Ok, you will be brought back to where you left off in the wallpapers. If you would like to report the wallpaper, scroll down and select Report Background. You are then given a few options for the reason why you are reporting the wallpaper.

Blackbeard’s Assault

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

Blackbeard’s Assault Blackbeard’s Assault is a game similar to Zuma. The object of the game is to remove all the balls from the path. You do this by matching three or more of the same color balls in a row. I know, sounds like the same old game you have played a million times, but this one is a step above the rest. The graphics are amazing, the game play is smooth, the sound is quality, there are enough levels/difficultly levels to satisfy even the avid game player and it is both addicting and challenging!

When you first open the application you will get the main screen where you are able to read about how to play Blackbeard’s Assault, actually play the game and see the credits for the app. I suggest taking a look at how to play the game before playing it the first time…there are quite a few helpful tips and tricks in there! Once you select Play, you will be brought to a menu with three difficult options; Normal, Hard and Expert. There is a nice story line that goes with the game so, after selecting a difficulty level, you will see a quick blurb and then you are able to tap the screen to begin the game.

Transformer 2.0

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Transformer I saw an application in Cydia today called Transformer. It is an app that allows you to make your iPod Touch look more like an iPhone. According to the more info, you can add iPhone Prefs, Signal Bars and iPhone Apps (Phone, SMS, Camera) to your iPod Touch. We do not have any test iPod Touches (all of our test phones are iPhones). But, I’m curious to know if this application works well. So, if you are one of the people brave enough to test it out, let me know in the comments how it worked for you! Transformer is available via the ModMyi source.
