iPhone Firmware 4.0 Beta 3 Has Rotation Lock, iPod Controls & iPod Icon

Firmware 4.0Apple released iPhone firmware 4.0 beta 3 today and then quickly pulled it back down. We haven’t heard if it’s back up yet but we have heard of some of the new features. First, when double clicking the homebutton and seeing the icons of the apps running in the background you can now swipe to the left and see new buttons. The first is a orientation lock. When it’s selected the iPhone locks it orientation to portrait and shows an indicator in the status bar. From what I can see in video demonstrations, it does not lock in the current position but always forces back to portrait. Hopefully this is changed in a later update and will lock in which ever way you had it when pressing that icon.

Another feature is the iPod controls in the same area mentioned above. You can go back, play, pause or go forward a song. I’m really glad they brought this back. This is one reason I went back to 3.1.3 from 4.0 Beta 1. When running in the morning I can’t switch from RunKeeper to iPod to skip to the next song. I used to just double tap and get iPod controls to skip ahead. Really glad this is back. You can also get right to the iPod app form this same swipe to the left location. [Read more…]

iPad 3G Released Today

AppleToday Apple releases the iPad 3G. The difference between the iPad and the iPad 3G are the 3G version has a cell phone chip in it and can connect to cell networks for internet. The iPad 3G also has GPS. In the US the carrier compatible with the iPad 3G is AT&T. Their pricing plans for data are $14.99 for 250MB usable for 30 days, or $29.99 for unlimited data usable for 30 days. These plans also include the free use of AT&T’s 20,000 Wifi hotspots. If you’re wondering which plan is better for you, check out this article by arstechnica which explains how one plan might work better for you.

– Apple is closing stores from 4-5pm to prepare for the launch.
– Phone calls and text messaging are not supported although VOIP apps like Skype are.
– Preorders over the web should be delivered to your home today.
– No contract: The data plans automatically renew every 30 days but can be canceled with no penalty
– For billing purposes, AT&T will assign you a “fake” mobile number.
– Data usage is tracked on device through Settings>Cellular Data
– When using the 250MB plan you will receive popup notifications when you hit 200MB, 225MB, and 250MB.

iPhone Commercial – Family Man

##ICON_NAME## Apple has released a new iPhone commercial – Family Man. The commercial highlights the ability for the iPhone 3GS to capture and playback video as well as a few applications from the App Store (see list below).

I don’t know about you but, this commercial is soooo true for us! The grandparents really do like to see the videos, I totally use my iPhone all the time for cooking, our kids love to play games and watch videos and Doug uses his for everything (I’ve seen that guy do some pretty crazy things from his iPhone)… I’m pretty sure it never leaves his hands.

The Case of the “Lost” iPhone 4G

##ICON_NAME## So, as many of you well know… Apple’s 4th generation iPhone has made it’s debut a little early. Personally, I’m a skeptic by nature (more on that later) but here is what we know.

Apple employee Gray Powell (Apple Software Engineer working on the iPhone Baseband Software) seems to be the fellow who was once the owner of the lost 4th generation iPhone. On Thursday, March 18th, he was apparently celebrating his 27th birthday at Gourmet Haus Staudt, a nice German beer garden in Redwood City, California (which happens to be just 20 miles from Apple’s Loop headquarters) where he “supposedly” had a few too many of those German ales. In fact, his last facebook update from the 4G iPhone was… [Read more…]

Hey Walkies (free)

Doug just downloaded iCam today and it’s pretty cool… I’m totally using it to watch my three year old while he is taking his nap (or at least he is supposed to be!).

So far I’m not finding a live audio or video stream. It seems that Apple is filtering out people with cameras. Here’s what Gizmodo just said:

We’re inside. People are being seated. Anyone with a camera is being separated out for some reason. Seriously?

So we’ll just be checking all our sources for info. Steve is on the stage. When there is real factual info about the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, we will be posting it here. An amazing stat being shared is Apple sold over 300,000 iPads on the first day and 450,000 as of today. As usual, Steve Jobs is talking up stats, showing off some iPad apps, and showing they are a head of competition.

iPhone OS will ship in “Summer” of 2010 and a developer preview will be released today. There will be over 1500 new APIs, access to calendar, photo library, quicklook; new framework called accelerate for hardware accelerated math functions.

iPhone Commercial – Shopper

##ICON_NAME## This iPhone Commercial – Shopper – shows the use of a few stock applications; Safari, MMS (picture messaging) and Maps. However, it also features one of my favorite applications… RedLaser (try it once and you will be hooked!).

“I know an espresso maker isn’t the most romantic gift but my wife really wanted one. So I did a little research. Asked her sister which color she’d like, and then I did a quick check to see if it was cheaper anywhere else. Turned out the best price was around the corner. I’m a much smarter and faster shopper with my iPhone”

iPhone Commercial – Concert

##ICON_NAME## This commercial features two applications Shazam and Local Concerts. Both are free apps in the App Store. Personally, I LOVE Shazam!

“I was out the other night and this great song came on. So I used my iPhone to figure out who the band was. Downloaded their album, right there. And the best part was, my iPhone even told me when they were coming to town. So, all I had to do was buy the tickets. I still don’t know how my iPhone does all that.”

iPhone Firmware 4.0 Event Preview This Thursday!

AppleApple will be holding an event this Thursday, April 8th at 10:00am PT to show off the new 4.0 Firmware. One of the biggest features rumored to be announced is the ability to run applications in the background simultaneously. Additionally rumored is that hitting the home button twice will bring up an Exposé like view of the apps currently running. Instead of showing screenshots of current apps, it would show the icon of the apps. This would be one of the main features that competitor devices like Androids and the Palm Pre have. Of course, if you’re jailbroken, you can already do this with Backgrounder.

Apple Comments on Removal of Apps Containing Sexual Content

##ICON_NAME## Apparently there have been recent interviews in which Phil Schiller, head of worldwide product marketing at Apple, has commented on the removal of apps that contain sexual content. Below are a few snippets of what he had to say. [Read more…]

Apple Cleans Up App Store, Removes Naughty Apps

AppleThis is strange, very strange. Apple has removed all apps that contain, well, almost anything sexual. They seem to have changed their rules, once again, on what is allowed in the App Store. Developers are reporting info with the following standards:

1. No images of women in bikinis
2. No images of men in bikinis!
3. No skin
4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs
5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned
6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!!
7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content

Ok, so first of all, I can tell you that so far it seems to be true. Last week I just taught a class teaching parents how to use the parental control features of the iPhone and iPod touch to protect their kids against apps in the App Store. I was showing them that even in the top 25 free apps, adult apps would show up even without searching for terms. These apps are no longer there and they were there for quite a while. What’s also strange is that apps like the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and the Playboy apps are still in the store.

Apple originally banned these types of apps and then later allowed them. Now they are banning them again. Maybe they started to ban them at the beginning of the App Store days and then started getting sued and decided to allow them. Now, after getting legal things straightened out, they started banning again? Who knows…

Note: I’ve noticed that apps that have textual descriptions about sex positions are still in the store… Maybe it’s just a visual thing.
