Jailbreaking iPhone 3G

My mind can’t help but dream of the future of the iPhone 3G. I know that it will get jailbroke and unlocked, but how? With AT&T requiring you to activate in the store or Apple store how will pwnage or winpwn work? It restores your iPhone using custom hacked firmware through iTunes which then iTunes activated the iPhone. If this activation process is no longer done in iTunes, how will jailbreaking occur? I know previous methods such as jailbreakme.com used Safari exploits to gain write access and add Installer.app without needing to restore and reactivate. [Read more…]

iPhone 3G Requires 2 Year Contract, In Store Activation

AT&TApple and AT&T have learned their lesson. They have a plan on keeping people from unlocking the iPhone: require a 2 year contract and activate the iPhone in the store only. No more activation through iTunes. This means you can’t walk into the Apple Store, buy an iPhone, go home and unlock it to T-Mobile or whoever. You also can’t buy them online from AT&T’s website or Apple.com. This might not matter as much because many countries will be getting the iPhone 3G, but for those that won’t, it’s going to be pretty hard to get one. I assume this will be the same for most carriers throughout the world. One way might be through the few countries who do not allow carriers to lock phones but then the price will surely go up. This memo to AT&T stores explains it all: [Read more…]

New Poll – iPhone 3G…What Will You Do?

AppleiPhoneSchool It’s poll time again! The last poll was – How many 3rd party applications do you have on your iPhone or iPod Touch? (Webclips do not count!) Below are the results based on when we added the poll about week ago.

* Less than 5 (4%, 67 Votes)
* 5-10 (11%, 201 Votes)
* 10-20 (26%, 478 Votes)
* 20-30 (19%, 358 Votes)
* 30-40 (12%, 224 Votes)
* 40-50 (8%, 153 Votes)
* 50-100 (13%, 239 Votes)
* 100-150 (3%, 55 Votes)
* 150-200 (1%, 19 Votes)
* More than 200 (4%, 68 Votes)
Total Voters: 1862

I will say that I was among the 19 people who have between 150-200 applications. However, when I hit about the 125 application range my iPhone starts to act a little crazy and I usually have to restore it around the 175ish range. You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well. Here is the new poll:

iPhone 3G gets GPS

One of the biggest features of the new iPhone 3G is GPS. This includes live, updated tracking on Google Maps. There is even news today of TomTom preparing an app for the App Store.

“Our navigation system runs on the iPhone already,”

The GPS in the iPhone is not your normal GPS. With the iPhone you get A-GPS or assisted GPS. The iPhone uses it’s internet connection through the cell network to get information about where the sattelites are currently located and makes a faster connection.

Have you ever noticed that when in a building, GPS can’t get signal to the satellites. The iPhone 3G also uses the info from the cell phone towers and wifi routers to give you location information when GPS is not available. [Read more…]

$199 too good to be true?

So, what’s the catch? It sounds like there is a catch and if you’re planning on unlocking, it’s a big catch. AT&T is saying there will be in store activation only, and there may be a penalty for not activating your iPhone 3G within 30 days of purchase. You also have to sign a 2 year contract whether you have an existing iPhone and/or account. They are also dropping the GoPhone plans and raising the data plan to $30 a month from $20 due to 3G. This shouldn’t effect me since I’m already with AT&T. We’ll probably move our numbers to the new iPhones and unlock our old ones for testing purposes. $10 more a month x2 for 3G is ok I guess (once they get it in our area).
