Apple Posts Support Document Warning Against Jailbreaking

Apple Apple recently posted a support document warning against the affects of jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch. The document lists some affects of jailbreaking and that it is a “violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.” Check out the full document below.

iPhone 3.1 beta 3 – New Features

##ICON_NAME## Apple has released firmware 3.1 beta 3 to developers. The firmware has been found to have a few cool new features (see list below).

Note: If you are a developer, you will need to update to 3.1 beta 3 before July 29th because 3.1 beta 2 expires at midnight on the 28th.

    • Copy and paste videos – You can now copy and paste videos in your e-mails. There is a 15 MB limit for copying/pasting videos or images. This limit is most likely there to save bandwidth usage (see demo video below).
    • Tethering counter – If you go to Settings -> Genral -> Usage on your iPhone, you’ll notice Tethering data which shows how much tethering you’ve used. Note: Tethering is not available to AT&T users yet.
    • Springboard icons – When you hold down the Springboard icons they no longer vibrate.
    • Baseband updated – The baseband has been updated to 05.11.04.
    • Camera API additions

Change the Theme on an iPhone 3GS without Jailbreaking

settings I know some of you are bummed that you can’t jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. Well, if you are craving a new theme, you’re in luck…Apple gave you an option. You can invert your iPhone so that it is white on black instead of black on white.

Apple says it is for people who have difficulty seeing black on white or to make it easier to see at night. I say, they are secretly coming over to the dark side! If you would like to change your iPhone’s theme so that it is White on Black just head over to your stock Settings application, the General Option, the Accessibility option and you will see a White on Black feature….just turn that guy On. More Info on Push Notifications

Push NotificationsThe push notifications feature is slowly being released by Apple. Today, both AIM and BeeJive released updates with push notification. It’s great. Right now I have AIM and AP Mobile using the push service and it works great. Even when my iPhone is locked and put away for a while, it pops right up with a noise and message. Very nice. I find something very very important missing from the feature. First, here’s what Apple has to say in it’s “iPhone User Guide”.

This setting appears when you’ve installed an application from the App Store that uses
the Apple Push Notification service.

Push notifications are used by applications to alert you of new information, even when the application isn’t running. Notifications differ depending upon the application, but may include text or sound alerts, and a numbered badge on the application’s icon on the Home screen.

You can turn notifications off if you don’t want to be notified or want to conserve battery life.

Turn all notifications on or off: Tap Notifications and turn notifications on or off. Turn sounds, alerts, or badges on or off for an application: Tap Notifications, then choose an application from the list and choose the types of notification you want to turn on or off.

Now for the missing part. More feature rich notification controls. Right now you can turn on and off the badge, sound and pop ups individually. That’s awesome! But what if I don’t want people IMing me at 3:00am or don’t want news alerts all weekend. I think there needs to be a time control Facebook and Twitter already do this for my text messaging. It’s great! Off at 11:00pm and on at 7:00am. What is Apple’s solution to this? You might think, “Just turn it of when you go to bed”. Well, I don’t want to do that, because what if there is some weather app someday that I have notifications turned on when there is a tornado warning. I’ll want to hear that when I’m sleeping. So much for the thought that the new features were not cool enough for people to upgrade! It would be interesting to know how many of the 1 million are new iPhone customers and how many are upgrades.

Apple also said that in the first five days of the 3.0 firmware release, over 6 million people have download it! I think out of all the firmware updates, more people have upgraded to 3.0 than any other firmware. Let us know in the comments if you didn’t upgrade to the 3.0 firmware and why you didn’t!

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
