iPhone 4 Signal Loss When Touching Antenna

AppleThere is lots of talk out there about the iPhone 4 and it’s problems with the new, external antenna. I haven’t had any issues because I bought the bumper, the iPhone 4 case from Apple, on the first day and always used it. Today, while at work, I took off my bumper because we have these generic iPhone and iPod cables that are too bulky to work with the iPhone bumper. I also thought it was a good chance to test out any signal problems with the antenna. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone School Below will be the live stream are photos and videos of waiting in line at the Apple Store to get the iPhone 4. Doug says he will startstarted the stream around 6:00am CST. He waited in line since around 1:00am CST last night.

We’ll we’re here in line at the Apple Store at Jordan Creek Mall in Des Moines, Iowa. I woke up at about midnight and got everything all packed up. I’ve got a friend with me and we headed out. I’ve got a MacBook Pro with an AT&T cellular card, an iPad 3G, and my iPhone 3GS all with a lot of battery power and backup battery. Before I left home I checked out Twitter to see if anyone was here yet. Here’s the pic I found:

line

So far we’ve heard one crying baby and a guy throwing up so this should be an interesting night. It seems like there’s a decent mix of preorder and nonpreorders. I came to the store earlier in the day and they confirmed there were enough iPhones that I would get mine. I’m still waiting in line :) I’ll keep you update through this blog and Ustream live video streaming later in the morning.

Below are few pics of the line this morning:

Trapster Update – Support Added for Background Location

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

TrapsterIf you don’t know what Trapster is, here’s a quick overview. It is “a FREE app that alerts you as you approach speed traps, red light and speed cameras, police check points, and other wallet hazards.” Before the recent update the app would give you push notifications when a hazard would be reported near you. But it only knew where you were when the app was open. So the notification could be for somewhere you were when the app was last opened, not where you are now. You can visit their website at trapster.com/push to set up typical routes you take each day for work to make it more accurate. [Read more…]

Pandora App Updated, Runs in Background [finally]

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

Pandora Pandora updated their iPhone app to finally support running in the background. It’s using Apple’s new APIs to keep the audio streaming in the background but close down the rest of the app to save battery life. It worked well on my iPhone 3GS and the new iPod controls in the dock now support Pandora when it’s open.

Backgrounding this app only works on iOS 4 which means it doesn’t background on the iPad. Below is what it looks like.

GeoHot Has Another Jailbreak Ready

GeoHot was recently doing a presentation at a conference and talked all about the iPhone exploits. Be ready, he goes into some great detail about it but here’s the key phrase:

“There is also, I hinted to this a couple times, an unreleased exploit in every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in the bootrom to get code execution. And you know if I ever do another jailbreak, that’s the exploit I have. If you’ve seen I posted like a picture of 4.0 jailbroken. I posted my iPad jailbroken. All before Spirit was released. And I used like a completely different set of exploits which maybe when iPhone 4 comes out will be out.”

iPad Cases

I got an official iPad case from Apple for Father’s Day yesterday. Unfortunately, it won’t be here for 2-4 weeks because they are back ordered. I’ve heard mixed reviews on the case but I thought I would try it out for myself or I would never know how it works for me. I’ve also been looking around at other cases. I like a lot of things about the case from Apple from what I’ve seen, but I would like a case that doesn’t have a flap that I have to open every time I want to use my iPad. On the other hand, I want to protect it, both front and back, from nicks and scratches. Right now I use no case and carry my iPad in this messenger bag from Aéropostale: [Read more…]

Before you would just get a black screen instead of the picture. Here’s the full list of updates: [Read more…]

FullForce – Stretch iPhone Apps For Your iPad

Apple makes the claim that all of the existing iPhone apps will run on the iPad. This is true but unless the developer updates their app to run on the iPad it looks like this:

That is Facebook and Twitter for the iPhone. At the time of writing this article there were no official alternatives for the iPad for these apps. This is what you would be stuck with. Oh, wait, Apple made this little button down in the bottom right that says 2x. Look what this does: [Read more…]

Pre-order Your iPhone 4 From Your iPhone

Apple StoreToday was the first day of pre-ordering your iPhone 4. Things were running ok this morning when I first checked and I took my time going through the process of reserving my iPhone 4 on Apple’s website so I could take screenshots for our article. During that process Apple’s store went down while they updated the Mac mini. Once the store came back up I could never get through the entire pre-order process. This went on for most of the day.
