QuickTip – Clear History in Safari

AiS Sticking to my Safari theme, here is this weeks QuickTip! If you have a QuickTip you would like to submit you can email it to QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com.

QuickTip – When using Safari, it keeps track of your browsing History (similar to a Mac or PC). This is a nice feature for those times when you would like to go back to a website you were at a few days ago but cannot remember the site’s url. To see your Safari history, while in Safari, select the icon on the lower menu bar that looks like a book. You will then see an option titled History. When selected, it will display your browsing history for the current day as well as the last five days. To view one of the website’s in you history, just tap on it.

While in your history, you will also notice that there is a Clear option on the lower menu bar. You can choose to clear all your history or you can tap on a certain date and then clear the history just for that day. This is a quick and easy way to erase your Safari history. See screenshots below.

Aquarium – Turn your iPhone into an Aquarium

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Aquarium Aquarium is an application that will turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into an “aquarium.” When you install the app, it will be added into WinterBoard where it can then be activated/deactivated. If you activate the application, it will add a wallpaper to your iPhone that looks like the bottom of the Ocean. It will also add little swimming fish behind your icons on your SpringBoard. The fish are a little glitchy in their movement but, the app does not seem to affect the actual performance of the iPhone. This little application is available through the Ranbee source.

WeatherIcon Update – Removes Theme Adds Status Bar Icons

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WeatherIcon The WeatherIcon mod received a few updates overnight. The update to version 1.8.4 makes a few changes to the application that you will want to know about. The most obvious change is that it removes the icon theme from the package. So, when you update to version 1.8.4 you will no longer see a weather image just the actual weather in degrees. In order to have a weather images, you will need to install either the Katra WeatherIcon theme or the Klear WeatherIcon theme based on which weather images you prefer (see screenshots below). Both of these themes are available through the david.ashman.com source.

iPicFudger – Photobooth Type Application

iPicFudger is an photo editing application loaded with options! The developer quotes it as being a Photobooth like application. We do not have a ton of details about the application just yet but, it is soon to be submitted to the App Store (or you will be able to get it on your iPhone by other means ;) ). We do not have an ETA on the release date nor any info on what the app will cost but, below is a demo video. If you have the patience to watch the entire video…you will see all the very cool features that the application offers. It looks like it is a nicely designed, feature packed app.

Watch iPicFudger on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Ebay Mobile 1.2 Update

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

eBayeBay has updated it’s mobile application for the iPhone and added a few big features, one being access to messaging. This allows you to check messages, respond, and ask seller’s questions about items. You can also sort your search results by Max distance. Finally, another big feature is the added thumbnail view of hot items to the home screen. I can tell it’s customized to my recent searches.

There are other navigational and appearance tweaks you will notice in the update to version 1.2 as well. Here are some screenshots of these changes and the ones listed above. [Read more…]

witWIT Software has announced a full MMS application for the iPhone. The catch is it’s only available to the Portuguese App Store right now. Colorful Round Signal Bars Mod

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard Colorful Round Signal Bars is a mod that changes the signal bars on your Status Bar (those are the bars that display the signal quality you are receiving from your carrier). There are a few of these type of mods in Cydia but, I find this one to be nicely designed. So, if you are looking for a change…you might want to check it out. This mod is activated/deactivated in WinterBoard and is available via the ModMyi source.

White Calculator Mod

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard calculator-white2 Personally, I’m not huge on calculator mods. I actually use my calculator quite frequently so, I’m not sure why I’m not big on modding it. However, every once and a while I find a decent mod. Calculator-White is a mod that gives your calculator a white theme and give the buttons more of a handwritten look. One thing I like is that it also mods the extended calculator (when you turn your iPhone to landscape mode while in the Calculator application). Calculator-White is activated/deactivated via WinterBoard and is available via the Apple-News.fr source. Screenshots below.

Now Edit Google Docs Spreadsheets On Your iPhone or iPod Touch

Finally, a feature long overdue! The ability to edit Google spreadsheets from your iPhone or iPod Touch (Android too). This does not include Documents, just Spreadsheets. This is a step in the right direction and will be great for those trying to track spending/budgets, travel/mileage, etc. It’s pretty easy and works well. Features include allowing you to add new rows, edit existing cells, sort by columns, and filter by terms. It would be better if it was a real app but this will do for now. [Read more…]

Stack v2.2 New Features

Coming Soon: Cydia       Price: Free

Stack

Stack 2.2 comes with some great new features. First, you can reposition the stack on the dock by dragging it around. I’m excited about this one because I’ll be able to fit 5 icons on my dock. All you do is drag the stack where you want it and tap anywhere on the main screen to confirm. Other features include themeable grid view, and removal prompt. The ETA hasn’t been released yet but make sure to follow the developer (@stroughtonsmith) for release information. Check out the video below and make sure to leave comments here or on Steve’s blog on what you think!

1262 Images in my Camera Roll

AiS Ok, so I have a really bad habit of taking photos and screenshots (mostly screenshots) and then leaving them in my Camera Roll instead of deleting them off my iPhone once I copy them to my computer. On a side note: I blame this on Apple and the fact that my iPhone crashes almost every time I try to delete images from the Camera Roll…so, I stopped trying! Well, it has finally caught up to me.

Actually, it has been catching up to me for a while now but, I finally couldn’t take it any more. Apparently my iPhone does not like to load 1,262 images…it was taking three minutes and usually a few refreshes for the Camera Roll thumbnails to show up on my computer! So, I broke down and decided to delete all of the images out of my Camera Roll…well, I have found that it does not like trying to delete 1262 images either. So, after multiple crashes, I did what I always do when I cannot get my iPhone to work properly and I’m utterly frustrated…I handed it to Doug! :) He is still trying to get them to delete off my iPhone!!

Lesson Learned: Delete images from your Camera Roll once you have moved them to your computer (or you might never be able to delete them!)!

P.S. How many images do you have in your Camera Roll?

QuickTip – Change Default Search Engine

AiS Well, I still have a few more QuickTips for safari so, I will be sticking to my Safari theme again this week! If you have a QuickTip you would like to submit you can email it to QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com.

QuickTip – When in Safari, it automatically defaults to the Google search engine. Meaning, it uses Google when you search for things within Safari. However, this can be changed so that it defaults to the Yahoo search engine. If you go into the stock Settings application on your iPhone or iPod Touch, you can select the Safari option. Once in the Safari option, there is a Search Engine option. When selected, you have the ability to choose between Google and Yahoo. If you would like to switch the default search engine to Yahoo….just tap on Yahoo! You can then open Safari and you will notice that the quick search is now Yahoo instead of Google. See screenshots below.

Personally, I’m all about Google but I know some of you do prefer Yahoo! So, happy surfing! [Read more…]
