ContactFlow – View your Contacts Cover Flow Style

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

ContactFlow ContactFlow is not a new application…we had ContactFlow back in the day (firmware 1.1.4 and below). I’m not sure if this is the same app by the same developer with a slightly new interface or if it is a completely different application! Either way, we have had a similar application in the past (with the exact same title!).

ContactFlow is basically another way to view your contacts. When you open ContactFlow you will get a Cover Flow style list of all your contacts that have images. Note: It will only display contacts that have images assigned to them (see instruction below on how to add images to contacts). You can then scroll through your contacts by swiping your finger on your iPhone or iPod Touch’s screen. You can also jump to a certain letter by selecting the little magnifying glass icon…which will then bring up the alphabet and you can select a letter. The two arrows at the top of the screen allow you to quickly go to either your first or your last contact. [Read more…]

QuickTip – Safari, Tap to Scroll

Well guys, it is that time of the week again…time for a new QuickTip. I only have a few more quick tips for Safari (really basic stuff like; how to stop scrolling and one-tap zooming on pics and columns). If you have an additional Safari tips that you would like to submit…let us know at QuickTip@appleiphoneschool.com.

QuickTip – When in Safari tabbed browsing mode, you most likely switch between web pages by dragging your finger on your iPhone or iPod Touch’s screen. However, there is another way to switch between web pages. The alternative is to tap next to the white dots on the bottom of the screen. If you would like to scroll left, tap to the left of the dots. If you would like to scroll right, tap to the right of the dots. So, if you don’t feel like scrolling…you could always give this a try!

Note: This works on your SpringBoard as well.

Squig WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard squigtheme2 Squig is a pretty cool WinterBoard theme available through the Sleepers.net source. It does not contain a ton of mods basically you get a dock, status bar, wallpaper and the basic icons. It looks decent with the WeatherIcon and LiveTime mods though, it would be nice to see a Cydia and App Store icon added to the theme. This theme reminds me of summer!! :)

myPixelArt – Think Lite-Brite…iPhone Style

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

myPixelArt myPixelArt is an application that reminds me of the Lite-Brite I loved as a kid…only iPhone style! When you open the application, you will see three options; New, myGallery and Settings. In the Settings, you are able to turn the sound on/off, learn more about the application and get help using the app. To get started, select New.

You are then able to choose between three size work areas; small, medium and large. Once you have chosen a size, you will be brought to the design screen. To create an image, just tap on a pixel on the screen which will light it up. You can change the color of the “lights” by selecting the icon in the lower left corner. It will keep your past three color choices on the lower menu bar so that you are able to quickly switch between them (a very nice feature!). To add a title to your design, just tap on the upper menu bar where it says, New ArtWork. You can also resize the work area by pinching on the screen (the standard zooming technique). [Read more…]

Dashboard for iPhone Preview

Steven Troughton-SmithSteven Troughton-Smith, the developer of Stack and other apps, has recently posted some videos of a hack for the iPhone called Dashboard for the iPhone. Looks pretty sweet! Right now he’s only shown a clock and sticky note widgets. The Dashboard appears when you tap the home button once from the springboard (home screen). Just tap the home screen again for them to disappear. Not sure how this affects the short cut that jumps you to the first home screen when you are on other home screens. The effects are pretty nice (see videos below).

The Life of an App Store App

Doug sent me this article a few days ago and I thought it was very interesting. However, I forgot to pass it along! Some of you may have already read about this but, for those of you who haven’t…here you go.

Pinch Media has been keeping some nice records of App Store app statistics. What I found to be interesting were the results of the stats. It seems that people quickly lose interest in the apps they download from the App Store. In fact, according to Pinch Media, “For free applications, only about 20 percent of users return to use the app the first day after they download it, and then it quickly drops off from there. By 30 days out, less than 5 percent are using the app. The chart for paid apps shows a slightly steeper fall-off rate.”

Not only did I find this to be interesting but, based on my own experience, highly accurate. There are very few applications that I use on a daily basis and to be honest, there are many I completely forget about after using them the first time (or demoing them). [Read more…]

WeatherIcon Updates – Fixes Status Bar Icons

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WeatherIcon There have been a few updates to the WeatherIcon mod in the last day or so. They have been just simple updates but, I was happy to see them. If you use the Status Bar icons feature of the mos, then you have probably noticed that the right side of your weather image was getting cut off. Well, the first update fixes that issue. However, you probably also notice that he right side of your other Status Bar notification icons (mail, SMS…etc) where also getting cut off. The second update fixes that issue. So, overall, the mod looks much nicer now! The only thing I am waiting for now is an update that fixes the battery drain problem! Doug and I both have been experiencing major battery drain since turning on the Status Bar mod.

MyWoodWall WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

MyWoodWall mywoodwall4 MyWoodWall is a theme that actually uses one of my favorite icon sets (ChalkWork) from back in the day. The only issue I am having with themes is that I have a hard time making them look good with the WeatherIcon and LiveClock mods. I looked (via ssh) to see if there were any blank icons in the set that I could rename as the Weather or Clock icons but, I didn’t see any. You can get the MyWoodWall theme via the iSpazio source. Below are a few screenshots of the them.

Stack Application Discontinued

Stack Earlier this week, we wrote about all the new features that version 2.2 of Stack was going to include. Cool things like; repositioning the stack on the dock by dragging it around, themeable grid, removal prompt…etc. Well, it seems that due to frustration with piracy of his App Store apps, the developer of Stack is no longer going to be developing Stack. As a matter of fact, the application will be completely removed from Cydia in the next few days (so, make sure you get it while you can). Below is a quote from Steven’s post.

New Poll – Do you think it should be illegal to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch?

AiS Time for a new poll. The last poll was – Were you disappointed by the lack of iPhone and iPod Touch news during the Macworld 2009 Keynote? Below are the results.

* Yes – Where is the iPhone Nano!! (41.0%, 628 Votes)
* No – I expected it all along. (22.0%, 330 Votes)
* What’s Macworld? (10.0%, 147 Votes)
* I miss Steve Jobs! (27.0%, 416 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,521

You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well. Below is the new poll.

Of course, we personally think it should be legal to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch based on the fact that they are computers running a modified version of OS X. You are able to install third party apps (non Apple approved) on your computer so, why not your iPhone. We would love to hear your opinion about this in the comments! :)

Chalk Board Theme – WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Chalk Board chalkboardtheme3 Chalk Board is a new theme that was released in Cydia tonight. The package includes a lockscreen, sliders, icons, wallpaper, dock and SMS theme. To have the theme looks it’s best, you will want to make sure to have the icon and dock icon labels turned off via WinterBoard (select No Docked Icon Labels and No Undocked Icon Labels in WinterBoard). This theme is currently available via the ModMyi source however, the developer says that it will also be released via the MacCiti source which will be the source it is updated through.

No Dock Reflections

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard Honestly, I was slightly confused when I saw this app (No Dock Reflections) in Cydia. The purpose of the application is to allow the ability to turn of the dock reflections if you have the ReflectiveDock mod installed. What had me confused is that when I did a review of the ReflectiveDock mod when it was first released, it already added a “no dock reflections” option into WinterBoard….so, I didn’t see the reason why we would need it again as a seperate package. Well, after uninstalling and reinstalling both application I realized that somewhere along the line of updates, the ReflectiveDock mod no longer shows up in WinterBoard once installed and no longer installs an option to turn off the dock reflections. So, therefore, No Dock Reflections is a much needed and very useful application (though, I personally hardly ever turn off the dock reflections)! [Read more…]
