Rotation Inhibitor Update – Turn off Auto-Rotating Feature

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Rotation Inhibitor Today there was an update to Rotation Inhibitor, a SBSetting add-on toggle that allows you to turn of the auto-rotate feature on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The update does a few pretty cool things. It adds the Rotation icon for all the default SBSetting’s themes (which is nice!), it fixes a bug in which the keyboard was not working properly in apps that set their “keyboard orientation manually” and it made the app open-source. It update also added a new feature to the toggle that allows you to set which rotation orientation you would like to turn on. [Read more…]

Lock Calendar Update – Display Calendar Events on Lock Screen

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Lock Calendar It looks like Lock Calendarversion 1.0 has been released. I’m not sure if it has been a while since I have done a review of Lock Calendar or just a while since they have updated it! Either way…there are some new features in the app. In the settings for Lock Calendar (which is location in your stock Settings applicaiton) you now have the ability to choose a specific calendar to display on your lock screen (which is a great faeture) and the ability to do a lot more customizing of the app. You are able to select the seperator color, the background color and transpaency and the text color, current color, font type and font size for the Date Bar, Title, Location and Time. You can pretty much customize the app to look however you want now! I will say that it is not the most user friendly interface but, after a little time…you will get the hang of it. [Read more…]

Shutterfly for iPhone

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

Shutterfly for iPhone Within the last few day, Shutterfly has released a new iPhone app titled Shutterfly for iPhone. For those of you who are not familiar with Shutterfly, it is a photo website that allows you to store, share and print photos but, what they are probably more known for, is the ability to create a ton of products like photo books, cards, announcements, poster, calendar…etc. I have not used the website a ton (though, I know A LOT of people who do) but, I am in the process of making my first photo book!! So, I was interested in what there iPhone app would allow me to do!

Honestly, it is a very simple application that basically allows you to easily view the albums you have on Shutterfly.com and the ability to easily upload images from your iPhone to Shutterfly. The app doesn’t have a ton of functionality but, what it does…it does well. [Read more…]

Tap Memory – Test And Expand Your Memory Abilities

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Tap Memory Tap Memory is a game that will “test and expand your memory abilities.” The object of the game is to remember the numbers that were displayed on the screen and then tap the them in the correct order…as quickly as possible!

When the app opens, you get a main menu with four options; New Game, Resume Game, Multiplayer and High Scores. If you select New Game, you are then given three difficulty level options; Easy, Medium and Hard. Once you select a difficulty level, you will get the a screen displaying which level you are on and which wave with-in that level. Each level has five waves. When you begin, there will be circles with numbers in them. You must then quickly “memorize” all the numbers. Once the numbers disappear, you then tap the circles in order starting with the circle that contained the lowest number and ending with the circle that contained the highest number. The game starts off easy with just three numbers and a slow disappear rate however, each wave gets a little faster with-in the levels and each level adds another number! You also get more points the faster you tap the circles. It quickly becomes difficult! [Read more…]

Comet – Watch Comets Fly Across Your SpringBoard

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard Comet is a just a fun little application that “randomly” shoots comets across your SpringBoard. The comets go behind your icons which actually creates a pretty cool affect. Not an app I would leave activated all the time but, fun to check out. I did find that the comets shoot WAY too often. It would be better if they were like totally random…like every couple of minutes or so…that way just as you start would start to forget about them, one would go flying by! When you install Comet, it is added to WinterBoard where it can then be activated/deactivated. It is available via the Ranbee source. Screenshots below. [Read more…]

ParkingLot – Test Your Puzzle Solving Skills

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

ParkingLot If you have been with AppleiPhoneSchool for a while now (like since back in the day!) this application probably rings a bell…you might even remember it because it is one of FAVORITE iPhone games…I have loved it since the first time I played it on my first gen 1.1.x iPhone (I know you loved it too!)!!!

For those of you who do not know, ParkingLot has made it’s way from the jailbreak scene to the App Store scene. Honestly, not a lot has changed from when it was a jailbroke app…the graphics looks very similar.

Jailbreaking and Winterboard In The App Store

App StoreOne of our readers sent us this screenshot of an app called Dead Man’s Dungeon. You’ll notice in the description a warning about performance issues if you’re on a jailbroken iPhone suggesting WinterBoard as the problem. It’s interesting that Apple even allows them to use such terminology.

Here’s the quote from the app in the App Store. It was still there at the time of writing this article: [Read more…]

What’s Fresh – Know Which Fruits & Vegetables Are Fresh In Your Area

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

What's Fresh I was actually very intrigued by What’s Fresh from the first time I read the description of the application. I personally am big on organic foods and fresh produce so, this app sounded perfect for me. But, even if you are just interested in what fruits and vegetables are currently in season in your area…you will enjoy this app.

The first time you open What’s Fresh, you will need to enter your location. You can do so by selecting the My Location option on the lower menu bar. What is nice is that you have the choice to have the app Auto Locate you (which is what I did) or you can select a specific State. You will also want to choose a search distance. [Read more…]

Ovals – WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Ovals ovalstheme2 Ovals, is a theme that changes your icons into vertical ovals. The theme contains 53 icons and a wallpaper (actually a few wallpapers). There are a few things I really like about this theme. The first is that the theme has a mask so that all your App Store icons are themed! Which is sweet! The second is that the theme file contains an icon template (a .psd file) so that you can create an icon for any jailbroke apps that might not already have one. Ovals would also work for any of you who use the FCSB mod. Personally, I had to make a few mods to the theme for it to look the way I wanted it to. In WinterBoard, I selected; user wallpaper (and then just used a black wallpaper), transparent dock and reflective dock. You can get this theme via the modmyi source. [Read more…]

Vibrate Toggle SBSettings Update – Easily Turn on/off Vibrate Feature

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Vibrate Toggle SBSettings The update to version 1.0-1 of Vibrate Toggle SBSettings adds a little more functionality to the app. After writing my last post about the toggle, many of you pointed out that there were still times when your iPhone or iPod Touch vibrated even after using this app to toggle the vibrate feature off. The update fixes a few of these issue. Your iPhone/iPod Touch will no longer vibrate when receiving a text message, a phone call or when switching it to silent mode. However, it still does vibrate when switching back on from silent mode and when you plug your device in. So, we are getting closer…not quite there yet but, with another update or two I think we might get it! I personally still use this toggle because it does the majority of what I want it to.

Jailbreak 3.0 Beta 2

quickpwnIf you’re looking to jailbreak your 3.0 firmware there is an option out there. It only works for PCs right now because it uses quickpwn. It also doesn’t install Cydia, but RipDev’s Icy. I’m gonna test it out and let you know how it goes. If anyone else has tried it, let us know. Here’s a quote from quickpwn.com:

You can only jailbreak on the iPhone 3.0 Beta 2, iPhone 3G 3.0 beta 2, and iPod Touch 1st Gen beta 3.0. It’s 3.2 MB only because it install’s RiPDev’s Icy program. Once you’ve jailbroken you need to open Icy, refresh all the sources and install OpenSSH to jailbreak.

New Poll – Do you let your kids play with your iPhone or iPod Touch?

AiS Time for a new poll. The last poll was – Do you disable the keyboard auto-correction on your iPhone and/or iPod Touch? Below are the results based on when we added the poll about a week and a half ago.

* Yes (34.0%, 428 Votes)
* No (55.0%, 678 Votes)
* You can do that? (9.0%, 116 Votes)
* I will now! (2.0%, 22 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,244

I do not disable my auto-correction though, I have thought about it many times!!! It drives me crazy how many times it auto-corrects the wrong word but, I love when it does auto-correct a word correctly…so, for now, I’m going to stick it out a little longer!

You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well. Below is the new poll.

Developing an iPhone Application From Scratch

iPhone SDKOk, so I’ve been inspired by recent news articles of people writing iPhone apps and retiring at the age of 25. I figured I might as well try it out. First I’ll give you some background on what I already know, which isn’t a ton. I started programming basic when I was between 5 and 10. Can’t remember exactly but I remember writing my little programs and saving them to a 5.25 inch floppy disk. As things moved on I went through all the versions of Windows but never really wrote anything since Basic until the internet came a long and then started doing html. I did a lot of the basic stuff, a lot of it I still use today and some I probably shouldn’t :) Recently I’ve learned some php and css thanks to WordPress. I’ve always worked with PCs until the iPhone but working with jailbreaking and some of the hacking, I’ve learned the file structure of OS X. [Read more…]
