PushMod – Auto Check Email Every Minute

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

PushMod PushMod is a mod that allows you to change your email settings so that it checks for new email every minute. Once you install the app, you will need to go into your stock Settings application and then the Fetch New Data options…here you can select the Every 1 Minute option. You do not need to turn the Push feature On…it will automatically override that. That’s it, now your iPhone will check for new email every minute (this will update the badge on your email icon every minute as well). [Read more…]

List of Must-Have Utility and System Applications

AiS I decided that it is time to create a list of the all the must-have system/utility applications for the iPhone and/or iPod Touch. So, below are 16 system and utility applications that you will definitly want to check out…for more info about each one, click on their title, it links to more info. I tried not to list the apps in any particular order also, some of the apps listed overlap in functionality (for example, if you have IntelliScreen…you would not need a status bar notifier application). Let me know in the comments what some of the must-have apps are on your iPhone/iPod Touch! Ok, here we go!

Note: These are all jailbroke applications (for more info on jailbreaking…check out our f.a.q page). [Read more…]

Star Guitar – Synthesized Guitar Application

Available In: App Store       Price: $3.99

Star Guitar Star Guitar is a synthesized guitar application. It comes with 23 stock strumming patterns which you can slow down or speed up based on how many BPMs (beats/minute) you have it set at. There are also 3 different types of effects… “Silver” which is an acoustic type sound, “Electro” which is a clean electric guitar sound, and “Jazz” which is similar to “Electro” just with a little more base range. It has the full scale of chords (A-G) except that it’s listed “C,D,E,F,G,A,B” probably because that’s where the scale starts on the piano… who knows? Anyway, you can also choose from a few chord modifications for example: #, b, m(minor), 7th, and Maj(or)/sus4 and you can pile all of these on at the same time if you would like so you could create an “F#m7” or “Am7”<---which for some reason sounds awful btw. You have the option of recording your own songs or song ideas which would be ideal for the singer/song-writer on the fly! Star Guitar also features a metronome which would come in handy if you were not using one of the preset strumming patterns. [Read more…]

New Writer to AppleiPhoneSchool.com – JMCato

AiS We are adding yet another writer you the AppleiPhoneSchool team!! We are totally excited to add Justin (yes, another Justin) to the team! During the day, Justin spends his time as a professional photographer…seriously, how cool is that! He attended Des Moines Area Community College for one year before transferring to Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turner Falls, MA where he received a certificate of completion. Justin likes to spend his spare time playing guitar, shooting pics, playing Xbox and (of course) mastering his iPhone. Speaking of which, Justin stood in line for an hour and half on July 11, 2008 in order to purchase his black 8GB iPhone 3G.

Lockscreen Clock Hide

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Lockscreen Clock Hide Lockscreen Clock Hide is a mod that removes the time and date from your lockscreen leaving you with just a blank lockscreen. What is cool, is that it replaces the little lock icon that is normally on your status bar when your iPhone or iPod Touch is locked with the time! So, you don’t actually completely lose the time…it just gets moved to your status bar!

As soon as you install the app…it activated the mod (it is not activated/deactivated via WinterBoard). To get your date and time back, just uninstall the app. I had no issues installing or uninstalling this application. You can get Lockscreen Clock Hide via the david.ashman.com source.

SweetMail – View Unread Mail on Your Lockscreen

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

SweetMail SweetMail is an application that allows you to display your unread email messages on your lockscreen. This application has been out for a while now however, version 1.0 did not work very well so I wanted to see if it would be updated. It was recently updated and I have had a lot of requests for a review so, here we go.

Once installed, an icon for SweetMail is added to your SpringBoard. When you open the SweetMail app you get some general info about the app and the settings. To get into the settings, select the Update SweetMail option on the lower menu bar. This is where things get tricky! One of the settings is your mail server…normally this is not a problem and mail server info is easy to find….however, the mail server info for this application is different than normal. After trying a million different things, I finally ended up on the developer’s website where it lists the mail server info needed for this application! [Read more…]

Firmware 3.0 Beta 3 Released To Developers

AppleApple has recently released firmware 3.0 Beta 3, build 7A280f, to developers. Along with the firmware there are also updates to the SDK. Changes include performance improvements, user interface updates and alterations to Spotlight search. How does this affect you? Well one big issues with Beta 3 is it will not run apps that aren’t made for 3.0. This means none of your apps would work but the ones you’ve developed for 3.0 yourself. (as of writing this article, beta 3 is not jailbroken either.)

UPDATE: The note below is for the emulator in the SDK, not for the firmware on the iPhone. (Thanks to Tetanus in the comments for this info)

“Applications targeting devices prior to iPhone OS 3.0 beta cannot be tested in this seed, this bug is intended to be fixed in a future seed.”

i’Elegance – WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

i'Elegance ielegancetheme2 OK, as many of you know, I’m not a huge fan of themes what have the date and time on the SpringBoard…only because then I have to move a bunch of blank icons around in order for it to work correctly! But, I am willing to make an exception for i’Elegance! Not only is this theme simple and clean…it basically mods every part of your iPhone and/or iPod Touch. The weather, sms, calculator, keyboard, badges, icons, wallpaper, lock screen, status bar, slider bars, safari, mail….basically everything is modded and themed. This is where another bias of mine comes in, usually themes that mod a majority of your iPhone are thrown together and terribly designed…’Elegance is not one of those themes. The design is quality and it is consistent through all of the mods. I love how each loading screen is customized for each specific app! I also love how it says, “No Calls for You!” on my status bar (our test iPhone is fake activated). It made me laugh! :) [Read more…]

Lexic – Sweet Word Game

Available In: App Store       Price: $3.99

Lexic Lexic is a pretty sweet word game. I don’t know if word games are your thing or not but, I love them and this one is definitely among the best! The object of the game is to find as many words as possible among the letters on the screen but, depending on your game mode, the letters disappear as you use them and new ones fall into their place (it’s like a cross between Bejeweled and Boggle!). iSmart Dialer – Quickly Call, Text or Email Contacts Directly From Your Stock Keypad

Available In: Cydia       Price: $7.99

iSmartDialer Ok, I have to admit that I have been procrastinating the review of this application (only because usually these apps aren’t very good) however, about ten seconds into reviewing iSmartDialer I realized I was going to be wrong with this one!

iSmartDialer is an application that allows you to easily search your contacts, send a text and send an email all from your stock dialer. Once you install the app, you will need to activate it. In order to activate it, you have to purchase it which costs $7.99(USD). So, continue reading and you can decide if this is an application you are interested in purchasing. [Read more…]

Text Message from AT&T

AT&T Today I received a nice text message from AT&T. It told me that if I upgrade to the newest software, I will receive “fewer dropped calls, improved battery life and get the latest enhancements to Maps, Mail and Safari.” It then went on to say exactly what I needed to do in order to upgrade. There are a few things I find strange about this text message…one, firmware 2.2.1 has been out since the end of January two, Doug’s grandma also received the same text message a few days ago (she is on firmware 2.2…as am I) however, neither Doug nor his grandfather received the text message (they are on 3.0 beta 2 and 2.2.1). This leads me to believe they are only sending it to people who are not on 2.2.1 or above. I’m curious to know if you also received the text message from AT&T and what firmware you are on. Screenshot of the full text message below. [Read more…]

One Billion App Downloads

AppleApple is approaching one billion application downloads. They have a sweet live counter on their website. To celebrate, they are giving away a $10,000 iTunes card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. All you have to do is download an application from the App Store and you’re automatically entered. You can also enter on their website. It says you can enter up to 25 times per day but I could only get it to work once :( Here’s the info from their site: [Read more…]
