How to Prepare your iPhone 3GS for Jailbreak

##ICON_NAME## Last night, the Dev-Team released some info about the how to prepare the iPhone 3GS for jailbreaking. However, there wasn’t a guide yet. This morning there is a guide. Below is the info via the Dev-Team. You will want to check out their website for the how-to guide.

“Remember we warned you to stay away from any updates to 3.1 if you want to be able to jailbreak or unlock your 3GS.

Well this is an additional message to all you 3GS owners that would like to jailbreak your device sometime soon, but this advice comes with a warning! A warning that if you accidentally upgrade to 3.1, you will not be able to use Ultransn0w, so please re-read and double check this warning at the bottom of this post before proceeding.

You may have read or heard about techniques to capture files during the iTunes restore process. These will be required to jailbreak your phone in the near future, most of the methods involve icky USB snoops. Well, there is an even better and more reliable method to get your hands on those lovely files.

During the restore process iTunes nicely keeps these oh-so-top-secret-files in a lovely accessible place for us to copy out and backup, that place? /tmp on Mac OS X or %TEMP% on Windows. Thanks Apple — handy!

The downside to this approach is that you actually need to go through the restore process to get these signed files, which has risks if you are anywhere near 3.1 or 3.1 beta :-)

If you are ready to proceed and you know the risks we’ll get down to the nitty-gritty –

So during a usual recovery with iTunes, your signed iBEC is written to /tmp and during a DFU mode restore the signed iBSS is written there also. To be sure, restore in both modes one after another to be able to grab them both. You’ll need to keep an eye on the temp directory and copy it before it is deleted again by iTunes. I’m sure some nice folks will create a tutorial about this, we’ll link to the first person who makes a good one.

Should you choose to accept this mission, act fast, this needs to be done quickly! But again, always, always double check here to see if 3.1 has been released, if is has, then don’t do this.

WARNING!! – DANGER, WILL ROBINSON! – NB! – REMEMBER!

IF YOU CARE ABOUT ULTRASN0W, BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS METHOD! Do not attempt this if you have downloaded the 3.1 beta. You do NOT WANT TO accidentally restore your device to 3.1 beta — you’ll lose ultrasn0w if you do! BE WARNED :-)”

Voice Control – What Does it Actually Control?

Voice Control If have an iPhone 3GS then you are probably aware of the new feature…Voice Control. Voice Control is a feature that allows you the user to use spoken commands to make a phone call or control the iPod. That is fine and dandy and all but, what are the actual commands! It is hard to tell your iPhone to do something if you don’t know that what to tell it.

You can activate Voice Control by pressing and holding the Home Button on your iPhone. You can also activate it by pressing and holding the center button on your iPhone headphones. Once you hear the beep…you can start commanding. Below is a list of the available commands.

Enable Battery Percentage on iPhone 3GS without Jailbreaking

##ICON_NAME## One of my favorite mods on my jailbreak iPhone is that I can display the exact battery percentage of my battery on the status bar. Well, Apple has made this feature available on the iPhone 3GS. To enable the Status Bar percentage just go into your stock Settings application, then the General option, then the Usage option. In the Usage option, you will find the Battery Percentage feature…just turn it on. [Read more…]

Change the Theme on an iPhone 3GS without Jailbreaking

settings I know some of you are bummed that you can’t jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. Well, if you are craving a new theme, you’re in luck…Apple gave you an option. You can invert your iPhone so that it is white on black instead of black on white. Apple says it is for people who have difficulty seeing black on white or to make it easier to see at night. I say, they are secretly coming over to the dark side! If you would like to change your iPhone’s theme so that it is White on Black just head over to your stock Settings application, the General Option, the Accessibility option and you will see a White on Black feature….just turn that guy On. Friday Night Movie Night: Waterproof iPhone 3GS

YouTubeSo I got a great idea. Let me know if you hate it or love it (vote below). Every Friday night I will post some of the best/most viewed iPhone videos on YouTube of that week. If you find any throughout the week, send them to me at video@appleiphoneschool.com. I saw this one over at iClarified.com and cnet.com. Now hopefully this is legit, but I kinda think it its. This guy drops his iPhone into a pool and it keeps working. Of course it could be like a flip video in a waterproof case, or even an iPhone waterproof case. Anyone want to test it out?

Pro Gear Setup for iPhone 3GS Video Recording

CameraMacBreak recently took the iPhone 3GS and hooked it up to a bunch of pro level video gear. They used a PED3 iPhone stand to mount the iPhone. Kinda crazy idea. Pretty sure they spent more on the equipment than the iPhone. Here’s the video:

Apple Changes iPhone 3G S to iPhone 3GS

I can not tell you how happy it makes me to see that Apple is quietly (yes, quietly) changing the name of the iPhone 3G S to the iPhone 3GS. I have actually been watching this for a couple of days now. It started with their Press Releases and News Headlines. I was waiting until they made changes on their actual website before writing anything. Last night, they finally changed their iPhone 3GS information page to say iPhone 3GS instead of iPhone 3G S. iPhone 3GS Disassemble and Repair Video

##ICON_NAME## Directfix.com recently posted a video on how to disassemble and repair an iPhone 3GS. If you are the fix-it type and you break your touch screen or you want to replace your battery or LCD…here are step-by-step instructions on how to do that! I honestly would never try this (Doug might) but, it is interesting to watch.

I also found that if you are willing to give it a shot, you can purchase the touch screen (IP-2320) and the LCD (IP-2321) for $69.99 each on their website. Below is the video demo.

1 Million 3GS iPhones Sold

iPhone 3GS Ok, many of you have probably already heard about this but, in just three days (from Friday to Sunday) Apple sold over a million 3GS iPhones. So much for the thought that the new features were not cool enough for people to upgrade! It would be interesting to know how many of the 1 million are new iPhone customers and how many are upgrades.

Apple also said that in the first five days of the 3.0 firmware release, over 6 million people have download it! I think out of all the firmware updates, more people have upgraded to 3.0 than any other firmware. Let us know in the comments if you didn’t upgrade to the 3.0 firmware and why you didn’t!

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

AT&T Posts iPhone 3GS Customer Videos

AT&TAT&T has posted a bunch of videos to their YouTube account of the iPhone 3GS launch day. They include people waiting in line, new iPhone 3GS owners displaying new features and more.

iPhone 3GS Unlock Info

MuscleNerd If you follow MuscleNerd on Twitter (he is a member of the Dev-Team) you may already know this information but, this morning he twittered that the iPhone 3GS is being shipped with baseband 04.26.08. That is the baseband that ultrasn0w can be used on. Meaning, if the iPhone 3GS can be jailbroke, it can be unlocked using ultrasn0w. [Read more…]

Screenshots From iPhone 3GS

So I went to our local AT&T store and they had the iPhone 3GS out on display already. I took the liberty to take some screenshots and email them to myself :) The device is definitely faster and the autofocus on the camera rocked. The video looked really nice as well. Can’t wait to get mine tomorrow!

AT&T and Apple Stores Opening Early Tomorrow

AT&T It seems that most Apple and AT&T stores will be opening early tomorrow morning for the launch of the iPhone 3GS. Our local AT&T store will be opening at 7:00am (normally they open at 10:00am) for pre-order customers and once they are done with the pre-order customers, they will open the doors to everyone else.

Our Apple store is implementing a different strategy. They are going to be opening at 7:00am (normally open at 10:00am) to everyone however, they will have two lines; one for pre-order customers and one for those who have not pre-ordered. [Read more…]
